Is America running out of ideas? Another remake in the works

Samsoon_081106

What happened to creative ideas?

First “My Sassy Girl”, “the Chaser “, “A moment to remember” and now this?

Hollywood seems to be relying on the shoulders of success from other countries. Why? Because it guarantees easy money will be overflowing in their coffers.

The hit MBC Drama, ‘My Name Is Kim Sam Soon,’ starring Kim Suna and Hyun Bin, will be hitting the small screen across America.

NBC procured the rights to the Korean drama to be remade into a prime time series that will air sometime in 2009.

As for the cast, no word yet. But we think that they should pick Daniel Henney again. Maybe he will redeem himself from his wooden acting. And just maybe, this role can be an opportunity for him to break in to the big league.

I don’t think it can get better than the original. Kim Sun Ah and Hyun Bin were perfect. The elements that made me love the drama all the more won’t even make sense in a U.S. setting. (Two grown daughters living at home with their mom? That will raise an eyebrow, even though the constant bickering made them so lovable. And the male lead waiting two years for a girlfriend to come back? In America? As if!!)

  2. 2 sssshh November 7, 2008 at 2:20 am

    Agree with Cera.

Also a smart, handsome, rich restauranteer who loves pretty and sophiscated woman would not all of a sudden change his taste for women and falls in love with a big, strong, not pretty, bad tempered woman who happens to be older than himself. They fell in love with each other basically through quarelling and arguing. Although it was one of my favorites, the storyline is not really believeable when I really thought about it.

  3. 3 song November 7, 2008 at 2:26 am

oh every body copies from each other, CAn’t really help it…
but i don’t think it’ll be as interesting as the original!

  4. 4 ChiChi November 7, 2008 at 3:25 am

To all the retards with their smartass comments about Daniel Henney:
Please realize that he has made it. He’s procured the role for Agent X in the next X-men movie, a pretty big role seeing as he’s personally going to go after Wolverine.
And the movie is about Wolverine.
Thus, Daniel Henney will have lots of screen time as a secret assassination agent.
Now, while MNKSM will be my favorite Asian drama ever, I don’t expect it to do well here as is. They will HAVE to tweak it if they want anyone to watch. And unless I am much mistaken, TV tastes in 2009 won’t differ THAT much from 2008. Just saying.
So they’ll have to change it. And that is should be…

  5. 5 Kerkie November 7, 2008 at 3:49 am

I absolutely love this show and I’m pretty sure it’ll bomb in America. It just doesn’t translate well to America, unless you make the woman MUCH older than 29; an American woman unmarried and 30 isn’t that big a deal over here.
Yeah, they’re out of ideas, but honestly, almost everyone is out of ideas. I love my Korean dramas, but 90% of them have the SAME PLOT! There’s always a love triangle, there’s always lots to tears, the ‘twists’ are wholly predicitble. I have Full House, My Lovely SamSoon, Winter Sonata, and Hello, My Lady! on DVD here and though they differ, their skeletons are pretty much the same. Almost every show in every country is just a re-telling of the same thing.
From the first episode, I know what’s going to happen, but I still enjoy watching the journey. I’d rather watch it in Korean, though (and subtitled only).

  6. 6 soju November 7, 2008 at 4:20 am

    ^good points, kerkie.

i think its a good thing when americans can take ideas from other countries and have a go at it. and vice versa. shows that there is a sort of recognition that something that’s popular in one region of the globe might just be interesting in another. just goes to show that we can all learn from each other.

in reality … i don’t think that mnikss would make a good story in it’s americanized format, either. it was a fresh concept for asian audiences and especially korean dramas since, like kerkie stated, a lot of the dramas have had the same plotlines for years now. at least the characters dying in droves from leukemia aren’t as frequent anymore, but their industry also needed a facelift, so they borrowed the concept (bridget jones diary) from another country themselves.

i probably won’t watch this series, but i don’t watch a whole lot of american tv anymore, anyway.

  7. 7 ally November 7, 2008 at 5:07 am

No, they haven’t run out of ideas. It’s just that their ideas are not as good as others! And they realize it too!

  8. 8 YUNJAE Love November 7, 2008 at 5:15 am

    But a remake?EWW.
too many remakes will get boring D:

as if korea and other parts of asia don’t remake american things either. all’s fair.

Oh those cute Americans and their playing by the rules. Know many Korea companies that do something as legal like as actually buying the rights?

“you gotta be f’in kiddin’ me”

America is getting lazy as hell when it comes to producing new ideas. i don’t think i’m going to bother watching this. i’m also disappointed that the Korean film makers keep selling the rights to these films too. keep your work your own.

  12. 12 guava November 7, 2008 at 6:23 am

i will not be shocked when it is canceled. =/

americans need to be more open minded; this drama should be aired but with subtitles.

  13. 13 BKJSuh November 7, 2008 at 6:32 am

It will fail and I hope it fails in America.

  14. 14 rza November 7, 2008 at 6:48 am

    WHAT?

My lord, America is going down hill! Maybe instead of remaking it, why not try the rights of airing the actual drama. Remaking it seems like they stole something and resell it for a better price.

WHERE DID ALL THE ORIGINALITY GO??

Anyways, I think it will be an epic FLOP.

  15. 15 D: November 7, 2008 at 7:09 am

    WHAT THE F*CK!!!!
WHY DOES AMERICA KEEP DOING THAT!?
    gawd. so annoying.

  16. 16 Tenderly November 7, 2008 at 7:11 am

I don’t see why there is so much bashing against American shows’ lack of originality when almost all Korean dramas are the same BS anyway. The only difference about My Name Is Kim Sam Soon was that its ending wasn’t dramatic.

  17. 17 blahhhhhblahhhh November 7, 2008 at 7:22 am

What a stupid idea….it all revolves around her silly name “Samsoon”…how will that translate to English? No No No….I refuse to watch Daniel Henney AGAIN… bad enough sitting through his first “mind numbing” performance, I will not make that mistake again. NO NO NO….run fot the hills!!!!

  18. 18 taylor November 7, 2008 at 7:59 am

that’s lame, why do that when there are so many American Writers!!!

lmao is america running out of ideas? lmao shut the hell up poopseoul how about korea is running out of ideas? because obvisously america is where every korean wants to be? and what country does not remake something else from another country? look at all the korean music that is COPIED or REMADE from original american songs and half the times they don’t even announce its a remake!

  20. 20 wtf November 7, 2008 at 8:27 am

well, there are some korean rom-coms that are way overrated like the likes of my girl and princess hours…. way formulaic than my name is kim sam soon with formulaic characterization

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

well at least korea didn’t had a remake of originals from other countries…. particularly US. korea may have medical dramas or even chick dramas but the formula is effing different from america.

before i forget, hollywood hasn’t remade the classics of korea, japan, taiwan and thailand…. even latin america as well. are you aware of UGLY BETTY? i’m pretty sure you’re dunderhead enough NOT to know that. UGLY BETTY is a COLOMBIA original…. YO SOY BETTY LA FEA?????

In addition to this, can you cite what movies in hollywood which was ripped-off or remade by Korea? I’ve been checking Korean dramas and movies and i’ve observed none of them was copied from Hollywood classics.

Granted that Korea does remakes or rip-offs, but what’s shameful to hear is that Hollywood is also making remakes…. which is now getting chronic than Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Thailand counterparts. Hollywood? The once you’ve revered with hit flicks? is now ending up making remakes????? How sad

    theamerican November 6, 2008 at 5:09 pm

remake of ugly betty was actually better than the original. if they do remake it – i hope they fix it up a bit. i didn’t like kim sam soon, i fail to see how it is great, funny, imaginative, it was like a bollywood script with korean actors playing the parts. there are good korean dramas and there are bad ones, kss belongs to the latter.
    =================================

well, have you totally watched Kim Sam Soon? I guess your mind is superficial enough to understand what is being Kim Sam Soon despite her brazen attitude.

  30. 30 ferociousroxy November 7, 2008 at 11:17 am

Imagine the remakes of THE RING, THE GRUDGE, DARK WATER, ONE MISSED CALL, SHUTTER, THE EYE…. they ended up pathetically when remade by Hollywood. MY SASSY GIRL wasn’t as captivating as the Korean original…. the lead actors and actresses aren’t able to match the charm of Cha Tae Hyun and Jun Ji Hyun

  31. 31 mishagabz November 7, 2008 at 11:52 am

it proves that Korean movies are as good as hollywood movies..

  32. 32 haku November 7, 2008 at 12:25 pm

im not going to disagree with anyone because hollywood does remake a lot of things but dont act like korea doesnt do the same thing.

i mean look at the women. they basically remake their faces to fit the image of the west.

everyone is borrowing something from somewhere. nowadays its hard to be original and if you are someone is bound to copy it.

Why buy the rights when you can have it for free? lol

Koreans should slow down on criticism of USA since it’s the place their artists want to be. One even shedding clothes to make it big unfortunately.

  35. 35 Seong Mi-Na November 7, 2008 at 1:15 pm

soo, does that mean that whenever it airs in america that it will have a korean cast(mixture of cultures or whatever) but will kim suna be in it as well..im just a lil confused about the information..can anyone explain

  36. 36 Lynn November 7, 2008 at 1:27 pm

A remake from time to time doesn’t bother me. But hollywood is so into recycling and remaking it makes me ill.

  37. 37 Editor November 7, 2008 at 1:32 pm

Most of you people here are so short-sighted it’s amazing you can even see your keyboards to bang out this cliched drivel. You criticize the lack of creativity in America, yet you can’t even bother to find new and interesting ways to make your point. The fact is, the television landscape in America is vast, new cable channels spring up all the time and more networks are developing interesting and (yes) original content. True Blood, Mad Men, Weeds, Breaking Bad, Lost, etc… New shows have to come from somewhere and developing proven properties from overseas is a good way to great programs out there. Also, it’s not as if Korea has NEVER adapted programs from Japan or China (sarcasm).

Now, if a U.S. network adapts My Name is Kim Sam-Soon, this is nothing but good news for Korea and Korean culture. First, remakes ALWAYS spark interest in the originals and the originals ALWAYS get a much wider release. If the American remake is even marginally successful, then hipsters all over will be talking about how great the original is compared to the remake. This will in turn spark interest in other Korean shows. Second, royalties. The creators of Sam-Soon will probably see a whole lot of money, probably much more than they originally received when it was first broadcast. Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the duo who created The Office are doing pretty well these days.

Seriously people, stop whining for once and be proud that people in the west are finally taking Korean shows seriously. Personally I don’t care about Korean television in the slightest, but I’m very happy for Korea and the people behind Kim Sam Soon and I hope it’s successful.

  38. 38 chub November 7, 2008 at 2:28 pm

Yeah…because Korea has never ever ripped off any ideas.

They didn’t steal (pretty much every single of them) any food/candy products from Japan (Peppero, etc), steal designs from Japanese cars (Arcadia looks so much like the Legend), etc and claim it for themselves.

How dare Hollywood steal ideas from a country that only creates original works!!

  39. 39 snap. November 7, 2008 at 2:33 pm

i personally think it sounds promising, with shows like csi, criminal minds etc etc all about crime investigation people might be looking for a light-hearted romantic comedy type show (which mkss is) rather than dramatic, unrealistic shows like gossip girl, desperate housewives, 90210 whatnot. as well single women in their 30s might like it.

it’s a compliment the Americans are taking ideas elsewhere, that means they see something promising in the work

  40. 40 Ann*e November 7, 2008 at 3:01 pm

    OMG.

    why does america
try to copy a lot of things
    from other countries?!

    and the worst part is…
they don’t give korea any credit
    either!

    [correct me if i'm wrong.
    'my opinion']

    -sigh-

  41. 41 hannahlove November 7, 2008 at 3:03 pm

    hahahahha oh my gosh
    i can’t believe it.

the humour of sam soon just won’t work.
the name… SAM SOON doesn’t work for an american person.
    gosh.
I mean if people look into the history of it and realize it was originally a Korean show, it doesn’t do anything but good for the Korean entertainment industry.

I don’t think American’s lack creativity seeing that their shows are really popular here. What is wrong with being inspired by other people’s ideas?

p.s where is the original news source for this

  42. 42 medical beauty November 7, 2008 at 3:58 pm

That’s a stupid title. America loves that korean story, period. It’s impossible they run out of ideas. There are a lot of ideas oout there, but they just happen to like this drama.

  43. 43 ReiHa November 7, 2008 at 5:39 pm

The drama was already remade in the Philippines and it was great ^_^ coz i love the lead actress and her leading man…

Amrica can make their own romantic-comedy without the sex content hahaha jaz kidding LOL

but i would like to point out one thing…

    ORIGINAL IS BETTER.

  44. 45 riki November 7, 2008 at 10:14 pm

america has been remaking asian movies forever. the whole korean wave started back with the lake house which was a remake of “il mare” .
all the grudge movies, magnificent seven, shall we dance, the departed, etc. the list goes on and on. its like you said, take a guaranteed hit and put american actors in it its a sure thing. the problem with that is that asian audiences are different from american audiences. the lake house was a flop and “il mare” is a classic.
but i would love for them to put this on air in america with “ASAIN-AMERICAN/ASIAN ACTORS”. Even though i dont think that is what they are going to do. i’m sure the title will be changed to “beautiful sarah” or some crap, with a blond in the lead. watch and wait.

  45. 46 Popsseoul.com-Hasser November 8, 2008 at 1:17 am

But wasn’t kim sam soon just a koreanized version of bridget jones diary?
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

@danaburger, have you watched MY NAME IS KIM SAM SOON totally? Despite being the Korea’s BRIDGET JONES, there are lots of differences between BRIDGET JONES and KIM SAM SOON as a character because BRIDGET JONES talks about men and men and men and seems to have no insecurity. Meanwhile, for Kim Sam Soon, not only men but her family (and how she can make her family survive), marriage, and her name she despises most.

Another thing, Kim Sam Soon has more empowering details than Bridget Jones

YEP! I’ve watched the two series of Bridget Jones. And I already KNEW the difference between KIM SAM SOON and BRIDGET JONES.

As much as I don’t wanna bash Bridget Jones, at least Kim Sam Soon never gone thru with different men of different characteristics: megalomaniacs, eff-wits, perverts, and so on and so forth. Kim Sam Soon just went thru with 2 men, and had no sexual experience with her first boyfriend since she believes she will not go to bed until marriage. Second, Kim Sam Soon’s arse never became the major public spectacle. Third, she wasn’t kissed by a sexy gal-turned-dyke. Last, Kim Sam Soon wasn’t falsely accused as drug trafficker

  48. 49 Grace November 8, 2008 at 12:38 pm

“Of course they are running out of ideas! that’s why I watch korean dramas!!”

Really, that’s why u watch Korean dramas? Like Korea is filled with unique and amazingly different ideas? That’s why I STOPPED watching Korean dramas because I can figure out every story before it ends. It’s always the same tag-lines and usually similar story line and in many case not even similar but the same. There is either a love triangle with the mean rich girl and the poor kind girl, or the lovers always have to start out hating each other and god-forbid someone has to die because of some awful disease. The relationships are usually so mapped out in Korean drama’s it’s to yawn for.

Every country seems to be loosing their unique ideas and I’m sorry but Korea happens to be one of them.

  49. 50 Megan November 8, 2008 at 1:53 pm

Korean dramas aren’t original in the first place.

Kim Samsoon was a cute drama. But definitely not original either.
