Even though Dong-bang-shin-ki (DBSK) put out the fresh track, “Wrong number” for their 800,000 fans, they can’t deny the power of the Casseiopeians. Over 500,000 thousand votes were cast on the online English site for the Mnet KM Music Festival (2008 MKMF) for the boys.
As a result, DBSK snagged the “Album of the Year” Award from their arch rival, Big Bang on November 15th at the 10th Anniversary of the Mnet KM Music Festival.

If you rack up all the big-time Korean albums of the year and really get knit-picky about their qualities, MIROTIC definitely ranks at the top. Of course, it wasn’t the ONLY amazing album, I also thought that very solid albums aside from MIROTIC were Epik High’s “Pieces”, Younha’s “Someday”, Hyori’s “It’s Hyorish”, and Rain’s “Rainism”.
But definitely, the 4th album, MIROTIC, was true ear-candy for me; while I found myself skipping through tracks and favoring one or two on their 3rd album (”O”), MIROTIC kept me engaged through a full listen, which is extremely rare for me (the genre changes in the album were so fluid and natural, the composers who wrote the songs did a great job, and the vocals were breath taking).
I don’t know if PopSeoul was talking about the fan popularity determining the award’s designation between TVXQ and Big Bang, but honestly, from my point of view, if everyone who voted were voting without bias between “MIROTIC” and “Remember”, I would imagine that “MIROTIC” would’ve won anyhow, because despite there being very good results with Big Bang’s new album, the genre is rather focused towards electronica, so I’d imagine without all the fans mindlessly buying either one of the two, MIROTIC would’ve been much more solid in appealing to a bigger audience.

Mirotic album is love. The album of the year shoul dbe guarantee anyway. I love all songs in the album, except Flower Lady. The new 3 songs in the repackage album are nice addition, except Wish. I listened to Wish and still don’t understand why they need to collaborate with 2 male artists in the similar genre and age. I’m not a hater of the song though, but I just dont’ see the new or better flavour in Wish.
I honestly think that Epik High should have won Best Album! I don’t think DBSK deserved it, even though I like them and Mirotic was the first album from them that I really enjoyed. Oh well, glad Epik High won Best Hip Hop Group though

I’m happy for them. As much as their songs are beginning to resemble factory produced compositions, you can’t deny that fans are sweeping their albums off shelves. In my opinion, Mirotic was good, but underwhelming compared to previous releases like Rising Sun which was stellar.

Well, I think album sales will inevitably be a big factor in the judgment of who this award goes to. After all, it is really difficult to judge how an album is by other methods.
I mean, we, as fans, can say that “this album was better than that album” and whatnot, but how can you do that quantitatively? Imagine, if you were a judge; how could you possibly make it official that MIROTIC was better than PIECES or vice versa? It’s really difficult, because things like your taste in music (rap/hip hop fan vs. pop/ballad fan), lyrics, artist’ portrayal of the songs, etc. can be so heavily influenced from person to person.
So, I think going by the number of sales was the best they could get at as coming close to judging the album categories with the least amount of bias.
But I do agree, if I thought that MIROTIC was mediocre and thought PIECES completely outshines it, I would be kind of upset. Luckily though, I am thoroughly convinced (after having listened to both albums many times) that both albums are stellar, but MIROTIC has a greater capability to reach out to a wider audience (I mean, some of the ballad songs on MIROTIC, like “Flower Lady”, “Love in the Ice”, “Forgotten Season”, or “Looking at the Sunset” even appeal to adults; whereas, it’s really difficult to find adults who are willing to listen to a full-track of hip hop/rap).

Honestly, in regards of quality of a full studio album, DBSK won this fairly.
People should stop saying that “They won the award already, let someone else win it”, this isn’t charity, this is about who released the best album/music/artist, etc. Fans had their chance to vote, but those votes comprised of only 20% of the final outcome.
So, however popular certain artists were, come voting time with the public, critics and stats came in to play after that.
Anyhow, this years event seemed to be quite a strange one regarding Mnets reputation. I’m impressed that it was more well rounded, but they seemed to want to please everyone hence the “well rounded” award-giving.
But pleasing everyone is never an easy task, loads of you still seem to complain.
Best Album - DBSK (considering they only came back October)
Artist of the Year - Definately Big Bang. (They participated through out the year and got a lot of attention in different fields).
Songs - Wonder Girls (although I prefer “So Hot” and seriously am sick and tired of ‘Nobody).
So, even though personal preferences differ, the results definately reflect the Industry this year. Mad props to HyoRis, “U Go Girl”, because it was best dance for sure. And Best Male will always be Seo TaiJi.
International fans in their majority will always find something to whine about and never think of things objectively. It’s an Award show, there will always be winners and losers, get over it, your favourite artists have.

Are you kidding me? How is Album of the Year to you some consolation prize. Firstly, no “idol” group has won that award in many years (what is it, 10?). I’m not going to put down Artist of the Year or Song of the Year because that is unjust and I have no reason to undervalue Big Bang and Wonder Girl’s success. But Album of the Year is a significant award. DBSK has been working on this album nonstop for the past almost two years, during that time they must have faced many difficulties, feeling the pressure of returning to Korea, wondering if they’d be well received when they returned, if their fans would still support them, etc etc.
They’ve heavily invested themselves on this album, and it also showcases nearly all the member’s contributions as well. And it shows.
I think YOUR OPINION is a little ridiculous to not acknowledge this.
And FYI, there are no official “Daesangs” in the MKMF, that’s the Golden Disk Awards. People have just dubbed the top three awards as such, but they ALL HAVE EQUAL VALUE.
I’d also like to say, this was such a touching moment to bea DBSK fan, especially later when Changmin explained the reason behind his tears. That boy is just so amazing.

Ok, some cassies have indeed gone overboard. It looks like you are never happy with the situation. DBSK won album of the year, and personally i think they deserve the award. But criticizing other bands and saying that DBSK deserves those awards better than them is simply preposterous.
Some cassies are like terrorists if i can compare. Why? Because they’re bend on this false ideology that DBSK is the goddess of the music industry and they should receive all the prestigious awards! Isn’t it time you realise that other bands too can rise up to the occasion?
True enough, winning the artist of the year award doesnt necessarily mean that all their songs are better than DBSK, but it definitely meant something special.
And dont say that i’m not giving you cassies any respect. I think i’m already giving you ample respect here because unlike some fans… i do not bluntly condemn other bands who have received the awards just because they desperately want their fav. band to grab those awards.

DBSK won five awards and that really meant something. Similarly, other bands winning the respective prestigious awards equally showed something special about them.

I personally loved Epic High’s “Pieces, Part I”, it was such a brilliant and well put together album I still listen to it and I am slightly disappointed they didn’t get the award. But I am happy DBSK won, Mirotic was a highly popular and very good album. I personally liked the majority of people nominated for this award so I would of been happy with any one of them winning.

Big Bang for “Artiste of the year” cos they’ve been working hard in Korea for most of the time this year.
and since this award specifically stated the word “year”,BB really deserved it for all the fab songs they come out with ^^
WonderGirls for “song of the year” cos they’ve came out with a hit single each time,from “Tell me” to “So Hot” to “Nobody”.
All 3 songs were very well received and addictive.

Dong Bang Shin Ki for “Album of the year” cos based on sales,their album is the best selling one so far this year.
Based on music wise,they tried out many different genres and this time they focused more on the western style instead of the usual SMP songs.They managed to reach out to different people with their songs and vocals and they worked hard just 2 months into their comeback,so they deserved this award too.
But oh well,i don’t think everyone can agree with the winners list.But i hope they can get over it and there’s really no need to start comparing or arguing here^^

I think last night performance show how it was supposed to be done. They’re dancing to slow song? are you kidding me? If Wrong Number and Mirotic are slow dance song than I think Rising Sun is SUPER DUPER FAST. If you don’t like them, it’s OK. But please put credit to where it’s belong.
I think for fairness this is what the judgement based on (atleast when picking up the categories):
1. Song of the Years: the song with the most frequently played and request on radio, tv, and such.
2. Artist of the Year: The most productive artist, their achievement on the weekly chart and so on.
3. Album of the Year: Album with highest sells number.
See, if not how can you measures arts?? Arts is art. It’s different for each person.

im happy for them. a solid album + crazy sales number = automatic win. although i do enjoy epik highs album, their sales number isnt comparable to DBSK’s. & people who let artists fans affect their judgement of the artist are dumb. so the people who hate DBSK just because of Cassies, your really missing out on a great group.
