Ok So-ri sentenced to jail

oksori_081128

Actress Ok So-ri was recently sentenced to two years in jail because she was caught cheating on her husband Park Chul with a French chef.

What the heck?! Korea is still sending people to jail for things like adultery? The country is so hypocritical at times. In all their dramas there’s always some story of someone cheating on someone else and yet when it actually happens they convict them like a felon.  Although adultery is unethical, a jail sentence is uncalled for.

Obviously, Korea wants to tell the world that it’s ok for their men to  frequent room salons, sexy bars and other nightly activities (i.e. cheating on their wives), but if a woman cheats on her husband, that’s a “no-no.”

Ridiculous.

What do you think?

When you get married, you basically sign a contract. If someone breaks the contract, then you should be legally reprimanded. It’s not the law’s business if you’re just boyfriend/girlfriend, but you are married now. I think it’s not such a bad idea. It will make people realize that marriage should be taken seriously. It may even decrease the divorce rate and make for happier homes and less kids being born into broken homes. If 2 people are unhappy in a marriage, and they feel like they want to end it and be with other people, then as a mature couple, you talk about things. You DO NOT go out and have an affair with out your husband/wife knowing about it. That’s very wrong, and the cheating party should suffer some consequences for the suffering they caused the innocent party in the relationship. That’s only fair and just.

Oh yeah, Hong10, please don’t take up so much space on popseoul, huh? I mean, damn.

  6. 6 Kayla December 2, 2008 at 6:46 am

    ROFL. What a dumb law.

  7. 7 whores December 2, 2008 at 7:06 am

    You are all whores!

    “just adultery”

Anyone who commits adultery should be punished. 2 years in jail, that’s nothing. Go to one of those middle eastern countries, they’ll STONE YOU TO DEATH for adultery (which is a good law too).

  8. 8 saera December 2, 2008 at 7:23 am

yeah -.- when my friends told me that u can be arrested for cheating in korea i was like ..wtf -.-

  9. 9 Liz December 2, 2008 at 7:31 am

If you want someone to blame, blame that @ick of a husband for not wanting to give a divoirce when she asked for it, and that prick of a business partner who outing her. The husband gave her a loveless marriage. Who wants to stay in that. That business partner should’ve kept his mouth shut but I guess he was trying to “save face” for himself and his business.

It’s not right to cheat at all and the government should not get involved. She should’ve been fined since she got caught, not go to jail for 2 yrs. What the hell!!

So what happens now? You can defiantly bet she’ll be ostricized. It seems to be the thing to do over there. No one should hinder anyone’s career.

    Where are the protesters?!

So let’s recap the values of Korean society:

Woman cheats on husband: 2 years in jail.

Four men repeatedly rape a mentally disabled teenage girl, a member of their family, over a period of 7 years: No jail.

    @hong10

Thank you for writing down the lists of State’s laws. I tell you, I’m so glad I learned all these before I travel from coast to coast. I nearly died laughing here. You made my day.

  12. 12 seobak December 2, 2008 at 8:07 am

That is definitely ridiculous. Also the fact in dramas… GAWD we’re not in the 50’s anymore -____-; the poor woman T^T… sexism >:(

  13. 13 sticker December 2, 2008 at 8:28 am

    @hong10

First I don’t know who dbsd is, I do know big bang is a korean singer or artist. I do admit that I watched “My girl” and “Full House” and I loved it.
I also like doner kebab and shoarma, but I don’t like burka’s. I like my local chinese where I take out food once every week, but that doesn’t mean I don’t criticize the current chinese regime. I love pizza, which I ate a lot on my recent trip to rimini, despite that I still think Berlusconi is an embarassment. I love gossip girl, friends, scrubs, but I do think that americans are hypocrites.

So hong10 what’s you point? I seriously don’t get your point.

  14. 14 melonbarmonster December 2, 2008 at 8:52 am

This anti-adultery law is used by women more than men in Korea. Whoever wrote this needs to learn a little beyond who’s wearing what dress and do a little research before mouthing off of on things they know nothing about. The law may be considered harsh but there’s no need for any sympathy to Ok Sori the whore.

  15. 15 latte01 December 2, 2008 at 9:07 am

pretty iNDEED…what the F***K …for real???damn whewww thats freakin ridiculous.laughin at my ass hearin this….that sucks ever!!!

  16. 16 LadyIgraine December 2, 2008 at 9:32 am

It is indeed hypocritical to put a woman in jail because she cheated on her husband. I mean there’s a law were you can sue the other party for cheating but they won’t end up in jail.

  17. 17 xtina December 2, 2008 at 9:45 am

    popseoul.
    I completely agree.

    Illinois:
–In Chicago, it is illegal to take a french poodle to the Opera.
–According to state law, it is illegal to speak English. The officially recognized language is “American.”
–In Joliet, it is illegal to mispronounce the name Joliet

-It is NOT illegal to speak English. I took English literature all through out high school and when asked what language you speak everyone answers ‘English’. We have plenty of people who speak British English and American English here but when asked what language you speak you answer English for both.
    - You can mispronounce Joliet in Joliet.
    - I’ve never tried to take a dog to the Opera so I can’t speak on behave of that one.

    I don’t know where u got this from…

  20. 20 monalisa December 2, 2008 at 11:15 am

I don’t believe Park Chul would go that far to allow the mother of his child to go to jail. He’d need to think of the consequence that would have on his child – his first priority. He was probably angry that OSR tried to whitewash herself by accusing him – among other things – of trying to extort money from her.

  21. 21 tessa December 2, 2008 at 12:12 pm

    Grace:

“Koreans are fast becoming known as the most superficial people in the world (I’ve read this opinion many times and I’ve watched/read enough news and watched enough dramas to have to agree to it to a certain degree) that this is just one fine example of it. Example: parents will marry their children to anyone belonging to a rich family, to someone that went to top school, to anyone that has perceived “edge” on anybody, or even as ridiculous as someone speaking good English (!) – no matter what the price is. Even if it means absence of love, even if it means the person they have chosen may be alcoholic, has violent tendency, etc. Doesn’t matter. Complete disregard of the children’s right to choose. All for glory, all for name, all for the ‘edge”, all for the reputation. That’s why divorce is so common in that country, that’s why cheating is rampant. All wrong, but the snobby, superficial society that is South Korea made it so that these things inevitably happen. Then when it happens, what do they do? Cover it up and save face. Just like this one.

    Sometimes it feels so fake.”

Well said. I never knew Korea had such a law and yet, they heavily insinuate such activities in the entertainment industry. What????

  22. 22 Dona B. December 2, 2008 at 1:09 pm

i agree. it’s just too ridiculous! the men always gets away from cheating but women get all the bs. might as well do that to korean men as well.

  23. 24 asianromance December 3, 2008 at 1:03 pm

omfg…yes, cheating is wrong but you don’t see people putting MALE cheaters in prison. i know this is probably one of those old archaic laws that people forgot about but i hope there are loads of people in south korea protesting this and that there will be a change forthcoming. and that husband of hers who pressed these charges against her- i hope he lives a lonely life rejected by women everywhere.

  24. 25 Merry December 3, 2008 at 1:32 pm

Cheating is something bad! But i don’t think people should go to jail for this. That is a bit much! Let the couple deal with it not the government.

  25. 26 jazzy December 3, 2008 at 2:55 pm

    thats biased.
    and stupid.

  27. 28 Ngoc December 8, 2008 at 7:29 am

Thats DUMB! So a MAN can cheat on his WOMEN but his LADY cant do that? WTF. HOW SEXES!!

  28. 29 Alice December 8, 2008 at 2:56 pm

Wow, I never knew adultery was ILLEGAL…
    Speechless…

  29. 30 dadoh December 10, 2008 at 11:15 am

Wow,what a backward law. No wonder their divorce rate has risen.

  30. 31 The Dude December 29, 2008 at 2:17 pm

I don’t know. If they have children together especially sons her cheating seems like a serious offense to me. Two years might seem a bit excessive but maybe a year of hard labor would do the trick.

The truth of the matter is that adultery has a real cost especially to the children of the family.

  31. 32 BEJJ January 2, 2009 at 7:47 am

You can actually go to jail if you do that there?! I heard once they were trying something like that in Michigan but it didn’t go through.
