BoA is catching up to Britney Spears

boa_1

In the Billboard dance charts for January 3rd, 2009, BoA’s debut single, “Eat you up” has reached #15. The pint-sized pop act’s fresh track trails only a place behind Christina Aguilera’s “Keep gettin’ better” and 2 places behind Britney Spears’ “Womanizer.” SM Entertainment has been doing some mad promotions with their star by getting her in some Hollywood celeb’s birthday party, on radio, on Youtube, on MTV Iggy, and clubs. Her video was even spotted by alert POPSEOULers on Canadiana music channel, Much Music. With such wide exposure, BoA is bound to catch some attention.

  2. 2 grace December 28, 2008 at 5:31 am

this is a dance chart for gods sake

  3. 3 ufghszhjsafh December 28, 2008 at 5:39 am

i SOOOO bet all her fans are asian.
and all the people that got her on the charts & much music is 100% all asians.
i dont think she has any fans that are other races

  4. 4 SP December 28, 2008 at 5:49 am

Uh, who’s billboard are you referring to?

I haven’t heard her songs on the radio…!

Anyway, best of luck to her! :)

  5. 5 jen December 28, 2008 at 5:50 am

does this really matter? unless people start hearing her on the radios, mtv and in other mainstream medias, she’s not known in america as far as i’m concerned. boa is FAR from being anywhere near britney spear’s status.

why isn’t hyori debuting in america? out of all the kpopers, she would seem like the most logical. she already has the american “look” going on and she’s by far the hottest of all the female kpop stars.

  6. 6 xunie December 28, 2008 at 6:18 am

i am so happy for her. since she is asian, it does make sense that her first fans would be asian. smart producer will grab asian community before going to the rest. that is the path she has to walk to go to the top. BOA fighting.

  7. 7 Pride December 28, 2008 at 7:16 am

I’m all for Asians breaking into the American music market, but her song sucks. Sorry, but it does. It’s a so-so tune and you can still hear Engrish in it.

For the record, Womanizer ALSO sucks.

Oh yeah, I’m sure Britney’s quaking in her boots over this all “important” chart, lol! Britney probably doesn’t even know it exists, since it’s all about the Top 100 chart. Virtually no radio, no tv, no nothing, I think Utada has done better than Boa and she still wasn’t successful. And just think, the first single off an album is supposed to be the best, the one to grab attentions, well Boa’s first single has already bombed. I don’t really expect anything better to come out of her or her team of producers, so i guess we’ll hear more crappy songs in the next few months…of course, we won’t hear them in america, just on blogs like this!

    BOA U GO GIRL!!! :]

  10. 10 joy December 28, 2008 at 7:33 am

Utada hit #1 on a different chart (Dance Airplay chart).

In the chart that Popseoul is talking about above (Hot Dance/Club Play chart), BoA (#15) already has surpassed Utada (who peaked at #30).

  11. 11 .... December 28, 2008 at 8:46 am

    Dance charts don’t mean nothing.
When she lands a spot on the Billboard 100, it’ll mean something.

  12. 12 Sharurotto December 28, 2008 at 9:28 am

Yeah I never hear of or see her performances/news about her other than from K-Pop sites…I agree with the Utada thing…maybe BoA will also end up making music for anime and video games…stop looking at only dance charts, please

  13. 14 God December 28, 2008 at 9:50 am

LMAO. The dance charts mean less than nothing in America. Symbolically, just like BoA.

  14. 15 mina December 28, 2008 at 10:48 am

Canadiana?! are we some kind of new species that sprout out from another universe?! We’re Canadians!!!! my 4 year old niece can even spell it right!

  15. 16 La la December 28, 2008 at 10:50 am

@ VEGG well there’s one asian girl that is making a name in USA and her manager is OPRAH WINFREY and shes CHARICE PEMPENGCO sehs going to record her songs this january with david foster helping her…

  16. 17 One Day December 28, 2008 at 10:59 am

Though BoA’s song keeps moving up in the Hot Dance/Club chart (which doesn’t mean much),it shows that she’s moving forward in the right direction.

Joy is right about Utada hitting #1 on a different chart (Dance Airplay chart).

  17. 18 RiRi December 28, 2008 at 11:00 am

CHARICE PEMPENGCO is the bomb! I agree… number 1 Asian American in US Music Industry.

  18. 19 myoungjae December 28, 2008 at 11:52 am

notice how womanizer is hella old?? ya thats y shes catching

  19. 21 CANADIAN December 28, 2008 at 12:19 pm

    we are CANADIAN
we don’t live in igloos and say eh at the end of sentence
like Americans, we also enjoy watching music videos and have interest in music and we express this interest by watching Much Music
which, btw, plays much more music content than say MTV which shows stupid reality shows all the time like the Hills

  20. 22 asianromance December 28, 2008 at 2:07 pm

congratulation to boa for getting on the dance charts- but people, don’t let her high rank on the dance charts fool you into thinking that you’re going to start seeing her videos on whichever MTV channel that actually plays videos now or that her song will be playing on the radio every other hour. no one really pays attention to the dance charts in the US. but her position on the dance charts will catch a lot of other countries’ attention.

  21. 23 .nodame. December 28, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Both Koda Kumi and Utada had number ones on this chart, and they both went no where. This chart is pointless, and it’s insane for POPSEOUL, and anybody else, to think that this means she’s famous here. She isn’t.

  22. 24 Vegg December 28, 2008 at 3:05 pm

When Charice releases an actual single or album i will support her. (has she? cause i don’t think she hasor don’t know of it if she has) And that comment was aimed towards the “Why isn’t Hyori here?!” people.

P.S. Koda never aimed towards American Audience… it just caught on with her ties to games etc.
    Utada i supported and i love :)

  23. 25 Chippy December 28, 2008 at 3:12 pm

Hyori wouldn’t accomplish anything here either, so I don’t know why people are asking “why isn’t hyori in America?” She can’t sing, her english is terrible, and she’ll totally be put into the Tila Tequila category!

  24. 28 angie December 28, 2008 at 5:26 pm

She’s doomed to fail in the states with a title song called “Eat You Up.” Who’s DUMB idea was that?! I feel embarrassed for her!

  25. 30 La la December 28, 2008 at 10:13 pm

@ vegg yeah i will also support her…she’ll start recording this january that’s what she said in an interview here…

well @ those people asking why hyori is not debuting like BOA in AMERICA…well same faith is gonna happen to her…

  26. 31 Panda December 29, 2008 at 3:08 am

woots woots boa is catching up!!!

  27. 32 1349 December 29, 2008 at 4:17 am

This is a good start for BoA, I hope this song as well as her follow up singles will contintue to move up the chart and get into billboard hot 100.

@ nodame, I don’t think there is anyone, not even BoA’s fans who actually think that BoA is famous in the US or that she has even made it over here. BoA is just starting out in the US, from the bottom up~ so we’re just giving her as much support as we can. And kinds of achievement, no matter how small is still a great accomplishment because it means that BoA is getting somewhere in this tough American music industry.

  28. 33 PopSeoul December 29, 2008 at 7:13 am

.nodame. has a tendency to judge an artist at a whim. Don’t let her opinions hurt your feelings.

  29. 34 Afromantic December 29, 2008 at 12:13 pm

BoA will make it…saranghae BoA!!! Hwaiting!!!!

  30. 35 poppy December 30, 2008 at 6:52 am

  31. 36 .nodame. December 30, 2008 at 4:57 pm

“.nodame. has a tendency to judge an artist at a whim. Don’t let her opinions hurt your feelings.”

…I wasn’t trying to hurt anyones feelings. Sorry if I did, and I’m not posting on a whim, unlike some people (those who just randomly call people names). Thanks for making me feel bad.

  32. 37 CeceliaS December 30, 2008 at 11:37 pm

    “Womanizer” does not suck
    I thought Britney actually improved
A LOT since her bubbly Miss Teen USA
days….and BoA’s song is just plain
    boring to me…so WHATEVER

  33. 38 Amber December 31, 2008 at 9:00 am

    yay for BoA!!

  34. 39 tytika December 31, 2008 at 11:19 am

  35. 40 Megan January 1, 2009 at 1:49 pm

    EW.

I guess there is too much Asians in America.

Caucasians seriously cannot be listening to her crap music?

  36. 41 fangirl January 2, 2009 at 3:33 pm

    WOW! that’s something nice!

  37. 42 melc January 12, 2009 at 10:03 pm

maybe the songs not that good…thats why they have a few remixes…but actually the song lyrics are like repeating….so basically it good for beginners in english..

  38. 43 starmusicjoy February 4, 2009 at 5:19 am

i love boa but i don’t know about the whole britney spears is. but im not gonna lie… her dance skills are probably a whole let better.
