JYP bets his bottom dollar on US music industry

20090105113007608

It was only a matter of time.

With BoA making small ripples in the U.S., rival producer JYP is looking towards the distant shores of the United States as well.

On January 6th, singer/producer JYP (Park Jin-young) will be flying to America to fulfill the dream of many Koreans of “making it.” The producer will be betting his last dollar on getting a piece of the action- he will invest all his money, including his house in Korea into his U.S. based company. And to add to the seriousness, he will get an apartment near the office (so he can be there 24/7?).

So who will be debut in the U.S.? We speculate that the Wondergirls would be his first true attempt. Despite JYP saying that he will be debuting G-Soul, J Lim and Min, nothing has ever panned out. In fact, rumor has it that JYP’s wanted guarantees from his U.S. music industry partners that his trainees would be #1 hits. So of course,  at such high stakes, nothing would obviously happen.

So what makes now any different? Well. Actually, JYP would be entering the U.S. market under unfavorable economic conditions where people are getting laid off left and right and others still are tightening their belts.

So what will happen? Who knows.

wow are you sure he really bets everything???? American Eco isn’t good right now and beside American CD sales always going down every year and their no such concert show in America where they can promote their song.

i went to see it. It’s only like 3/4 floors. it looks prettier than the buildings around it, but… i hope it has some kinda ultimate underground fortress under that weensy building.

Hmmm, I reeeeally don’t see the point in trying to break America right now…..unless he’s looking on a global scale(as in it’d be easier to have success later in Europe and latin america if they’ve made it here). On the other hand, I can sorta see why he’d take the risk: for instance, dbsk’s last album sold almost 500k copies in Korea and was considered a huge success, while over here “not so popular” artists can move almost half or more of that in a week with the right following. and sale over that if they get lucky with a hit. Compare that with the “not so popular” sales in Korea….then think about how much more $$$ he’d have once that money made here is converted to won. The payoff would be excellent, but like you all, I think it’s nothing more than fool’s gold right now.

I don’t believe JYP would spend everything though. His label in Korea is still making money for him, but I’m sure it’s costing him a pretty penny.

jyp has to get an apartment near his usa office since he spends most of his time in usa, and only fools will believe jyp is going to debut wg in us, this is only a rumour….

  16. 16 Rin January 6, 2009 at 8:57 pm

JYP, i’d choose him as a CEO for a entertainemtn business over SM. And YG over JYP. All in all though, I think he’s one of the best entertainemnt CEO’s out there, give the guy a break. I’m sure he’s not stupid if he already made it this far.

  17. 17 blah January 6, 2009 at 10:09 pm

my my, the ambitious & greedy JYP, but he’s pretty genius i can say.
    so just wait & see…

the “LAMEDUCK WONDERGIRLS” HE’S GOING TO BRING TO THE US DURING RECESSION. GOOD LUCK TO YOU! MAYBE I SHOULD BRING OUT MY GRANDMOTHER’S “BROKEN” GRAMOPHONE….SOUNDS BETTER.

    No Offense!
But I donot think that any of the Korean Stars are going to make in the Music Industry because of America’s Economy and there are alot of Racist people in american usually towards everyone who is not White,Black or sometimes Latina. I know I have been there before!

But I hope they will at least get noticed!

well i think se7en have a chance for sucess. alot of people i shown like his songs and think that he can make it. they would actually buy his cd. so if not all can make i i think he may have a better chance at it. music wise

  21. 22 riki January 7, 2009 at 12:56 am

hollywood/movies and music artists are still doing well so the economy has nothing to do with it. it is about the kind of music and america can never appreciate good music. i could see big bang doing well but unless he whores them up the wonder girls wont do well in the us. i love them and their first album was awesome but it is also about image and they arent sluts so they cant make it in america like paris, lindsey and all the other dirties in the us

  22. 23 Orchid899 January 7, 2009 at 3:38 am

He’s already worked with American acts like the Cheetah girls and a few others. I don’t think he will have much success in the US with Korean acts. He may be hot for a couple of years because that’s all international acts can go. As far as producing American acts, well then maybe he will sustain his success a little longer.

  23. 24 CandyGirl89 January 7, 2009 at 4:22 am

boo the cheetah girls are weak

  24. 25 Kimm January 7, 2009 at 5:04 am

Big Bang wouldn’t be successful un the states either because they’re nothing but a bunch of posers and most music fans in the us would see that immediately. As for the WGs, they wouldn’t make it because they’re talentless, it has nothing to do with whether they’re redone in a slutty image or not, please, how stupid some of you sound. There are many musicians in the us whose image is not slutty and they still make it. Quit trying to make excuses for your horrible gimmicky no talent acts!

  25. 27 YG Entertainment January 7, 2009 at 5:25 am

@kimm(WG and BIG BANG HATER and other kpop haters)
i wanna throw a rice bowl at you and hit you in the face!
and y are you even in a kpop section if you hate them so much?

i am a diehard DBSK and snsd FAN but if you just go around and leave mean and retard comments that only shows how stupid you are. saying stuff like “TALENTLESS SLUTS, or THUG POSERS, UGLY $#!+” come on grow up. don’t talk like that if you don’t even know them. or do you? xDD im just kidding hate comments dont even bother me anymore in fact sometimes its pretty funny like when WG are singing irony their outfits are for the feel of the song and you calling them slutty? anyways BOTTOM LINE: i know you are leaving hate comments because you are bored or something(OR HAVE NO LIFE) and maybe you guys are going through a hard time in life, but if you STOP hating and start loving you will go places in life(You will never amount to anything) but overall i appreciate you (Kimm) even comment WG or Big bang~ ANYWAYS for all you big bang and WG haters out ther REMEMBER! I love you(GO F0CK YOURSELF)xDDD

  26. 28 이바보 Kimm January 7, 2009 at 5:33 am

haha oohh…harsh funny ^comment by YG ent.

i agree both wondergirls and big bang worked hard to get where they are and some even have sad stories behind their strive for success. wondergirls are extremely humble and big bang are really nice. anyways just ignore the mean comments they arent even worth it! tune them out and lol every group has antis! it’s a basic neccessity to every successful kpop group. WONDER GIRLS FIGHTING! haters come and go, but FANS ARE FOREVER! ^^

  27. 29 Kimm January 7, 2009 at 8:23 am

I can comment on whoever I want to comment on, it’s a free forum. Why don’t you go back to the soompi forums or something if you want everyone to bow down to certain groups. No, I don’t like BB or WGs but there are many kpop artists that I do like, so if you can’t take criticism of your favorite artists, then go somewhere like a fanforum so you won’t get your little feelings hurt! Gracious!

exactly. some fans out there are just effing blind/stupid. as if they know or care what real raw musical talent is abt.

  34. 37 Shaenna January 8, 2009 at 3:52 am

So obviusly he doesn’t watch the news…

  35. 38 wow January 8, 2009 at 5:14 am

I’m sorry but Kimm is right. Like it or not, NONE of the Korean groups would make it in the U.S(and the person that said “Americans don’t like good music…..as opposed to Kpop?? LMAO you cannot be serious). Big Bang is cool, but C’mon people even gave Eminem a hard time when he first dropped and he grew up on 8 mile AND was backed by Dre. You can only imagine the response to a group from Korea saying “yeah, boy” and “wassup” and ish.

Do I even need to explain Wondergirls? They can’t sing or dance very well. They have catchy songs but those wouldn’t even cross over to U.S markets.

I don’t even think DBSK would make it here. Maybe solo artists like se7en and Rain, but definitely none of the groups.

  36. 39 felisshi January 8, 2009 at 12:11 pm

Mr. JYP please save a few dollars. You might need them in the future. Why not just write good songs for your talents, make MVs, produce and promote them in countries where they really are famous. That way you’ll cash in later. (Not that he has not yet).

  37. 40 weirdo_chick:D January 9, 2009 at 7:43 am

um, hoping him good luck, because if you can’t sing for squat, then you better be heka good looking, teens are screaming for you, or something because that’s how fools like miley cyrus and taylor swift who can’t sing for squat make it. taylor swift is so darn gorgeous and well miley cyrus’ fan base contains 8-12 year olds.
