Hye-kyo Song needs subtitles

Songhyekyo_090111

Yes, Hye-kyo Song is considered to be one of Korea’s natural beauties, but the girl need to work on her English skills. Again, I do not understand why oh why Korean people (in general) continue to inflict extra pain on themselves by trying to speak a language that they are not comfortable in. I barely understand the obviously scripted speech that Song Hye-kyo was muddling through as “goodwill ambassador” for the 1st Youtube Symphony Orchestra. Where are her English subtitles? You don’t see the kyopo (cough, Ahn Trio)  promoters speaking in Korean….

And just because she made an art house film in English doesn’t mean she should speak in English….

Check it out in English here (Note: experiencing technical difficulties with embedding the video)

Song Hye-kyo’s Korean promo is not any better

I am not bothered by her ‘engrish’.
But I think the b!tch needs to learn how to act ASAP.
Looks can only go so far and she is not getting any younger.
As she is getting older, her dramas and movies have nothing been but flops.
She hasn’t had a hit since Full House.
He acting in her latest series The World They Live In totally sucked and it was very noticeable because Hyunbin totally overshadowed her bleh acting. It was in this series that she could no longer rest just on her pretty laurels…it was also in this series where a lot of critics finally discovered that she is still lacking in the acting department.(something that most of us who’s opinions were never clouded by her looks already knew from the get go.)

  2. 2 wonder January 12, 2009 at 11:02 am

if she wasnt pretty, you guys would be tearing her to pieces and thats a fact. as a girl i dont care if she’s pretty or not but its not only the english that i found amusing. she has bad PR skills too, to the point of me finding it hard to believe she’s a celebrity!

  3. 3 marcel January 12, 2009 at 11:20 am

whoa, that was kind of, she has the typical korean accent, which i’m used to hearing, but it sounds pretty heavy in the promo, at least her grammar & vocabulary were all correct

it doesn’t help that song hye kyo is probably one of the most overrated actresses in k-entertainment, next to kim tae hee & a few others i can think of, but won’t name names here

& i can’t believe people still think she’s ‘natural’! she must really have us all out to be fools, won’t be getting any sympathy from me, ice princess that she seems

I don’t think it’s THAT serious, you know? Ok, she is incomprehensible sometimes but she is trying. Thats worth something

  5. 5 boohoo January 12, 2009 at 11:27 am

haha that was like a scripted beauty pageant answer!
strangely i understood 90% of it. maybe cos the copywriting is so standard access cable commercial break stuff.

  6. 6 carrie001 January 12, 2009 at 11:30 am

^@ wonder, sure we would be tearing her to pieces if she wasn’t pretty and she didn’t know how to act.
The thing is though, she is pretty but that’s all there is to her, yet people obsessed with her looks are denying the fact that she is not a good actress and are willing to forget her shortcomings.

There are other actresses that are in the ‘not pretty’ category like Gong Hyo Jin that are so underrated. They deserve so much more praise than what Song Hye Kyo is getting.

It kinda reminds me of the whole Kim Myung Min vs Song Seung Hoon debacle. Kim Mung Min known for his superb acting and Song Seung Hoon known for his good looks and so so acting…and what happened Kim Myung Min’s reward was having to share the glory with so so actor Song Seung Hoon another actor popular for his looks alone.

There are already closed caption subtitles in this movie, just click on the button to the bottom right of the YouTube window. One of the options lets you select captions and then you can select the language you would like to read them in.

wasnt she like schooled in Austrialia ?

Maybe this is just me, but everything posted here almost sounds like jinoistic dialogue here. I understood pretty much everything in that video, I don’t know what everyone else was watching. English isn’t a universal language, nor is it an easy language to speak period. Each countries language relies on different phonetics and grammatical rules; naturally one’s dialect influences how someone speaks English, or any other foreign language.
Anyone else notice how once you’re done attacking her language skills your brings the insults into the subjective realm of beauty? Plenty of American actresses (and actors) look “beautiful” and can’t act worth anything. Deal with it. Stop harassing people because they’re different from you. Besides, doesn’t anyone think the idea of a YouTube-based orchestra aimed at giving creative children (people) an outlet is a good thing? How come no one can comment on that?

props to her for trying her best, it wasn’t that bad to me. english is not her first language anyway.

  11. 12 PrinceKyu January 12, 2009 at 2:45 pm

her mother langguage is not english anyway!! and don’t bash her look (lips), it’s from God so you all bash HIM also!!

Antis don’t have anything to do, gosh!!

I dont know much about this actress, but I think she deserves an Applause for trying to speak a language that is not her Native Tongue. And she did a good job of it, I did understand everything she said. No I am not a Native English speaker either and no I am not Korean either. But I have learned that it makes a Human being more appreciative of others when we know and make an effort to learn another language. A lot of culture and meanings of traditions will end up being lost if a language is lost.

I like how she looks when she just debuted….but now she always look tired and heavily rely on make-up

  14. 15 katie January 12, 2009 at 4:59 pm

    youtube orchestra?
    sounds interesting (Y)

  15. 16 Alison January 12, 2009 at 5:30 pm

c’mon even popseoul english is not any better
    check it…
….and just because she made a art house film in English…

    a art…should it be …an art…….?
wow, at least we all tried
    P.E.A.C.E ^^

…LOL, yah, that was pretty tough to understand. This isn’t a serious commentary — so ditto on the comments.

They should of gotten someone else to do the English comments. Just because she’s popular in Korea doesn’t mean she should speak in English & to a certain extent embarrass herself & potentially Koreans in general.

  18. 19 Music January 12, 2009 at 10:32 pm

me either, but i love to see her speaks English.

  19. 21 TomatoJuice January 12, 2009 at 11:40 pm

um. her english is okay but i can’t understand some other words that she’s saying. Her accent is just heavy that’s why. hmm. She can still improve if she’ll live in America for more than a year. :D ~ peace.

  20. 22 alifeinsweden January 13, 2009 at 12:13 am

There should be a google translate kind of thing for live voices! If she speaks her language right into a microphone and then her voice will turn to english! That would be something to invent!
Google translate is actually a good tool when you just want to understand, I use it for my blog translating to chinese and soon more languages! It sure would have been great to have something like that for realtime voice translation!

    Hey Popseoul!

It’s nice to see you bagging on somone’s english when you write things like:

“And just because she made a art house film in English doesn’t mean she should speak in English….”

Ummmm… “a art house”… i’m sorry popseoul. It’s “AN ART HOUSE”. i hear so many LA type korean americans with incorrect English usage it boggles my mind when one of them tries to criticize a Korean for misusing the language.

Fix your own english before you bag on someone else.

  22. 24 poppy January 13, 2009 at 6:38 am

ders part that i understand that’s surprisingly alot but when she goes faster it’s like she’s speaking gibberish….anyway i’d say it’s well!!!

  23. 25 Maddie January 13, 2009 at 8:25 am

I don’t know why people are excusing her poor performance with a variety of reasons. My mother, who hasn’t even touched a book about learning english, can replicate sounds better than that. Mind you, she’s in her late 50’s and hasn’t reached beyond 4 senetences with a foreigner.

Either practice like your life depends on it then speak it, or stick to your oringinal native tongue. A half ass job slurring and gibberishing isn’t alright. There’s nothing wrong with the Korean language, it’s not embarrassing and it’s shouldn’t be looked as secondary to english. I don’t see the need for anyone to speak in English unless the video is actually promoted in a country in which English is dominant. Even than, someone else or translations would have been equally appreciated.

    Also, side note…

Writing in unintentional bad grammar doesn’t equate to speaking in an uncomprehensible way.

  24. 26 mimi January 13, 2009 at 12:13 pm

i don’t what happened with You popseoul .. maybe You just jealous with her ,, she want to speak korean or English it her right ok

  25. 27 sunnyside January 13, 2009 at 4:03 pm

as much as I love her, they should have just made her due it in Korean and then just put english subtitles on it.

  26. 28 bdean January 13, 2009 at 4:05 pm

Give her a break – at least SHG is trying and she probably was ASKED to speak in English.

As for “overrated actress” – I don’t think that applies since I highly doubt there are many who consider her acting to be top-notch (otoh, overrated celeb may apply).

  27. 29 hello January 13, 2009 at 6:42 pm

    her English is not ……..

  29. 31 Michelle January 14, 2009 at 10:40 am

she’s beautiful. her korean is great lol, lets just forget the english

  30. 32 iamneutral January 15, 2009 at 1:40 pm

    @hello..

hi there. we are both from the same country and I pity you for bashing your teachers in which case even your so-called-engrish is all out of place..”unlucked-ky” you for having to endure them throughout the day in school, i guess.

and yes, SHG is godsmacking beautiful and again,yes,..her english is soo poor, the girl needs to polish up some basic english communication skill at least. Even my seven-yea-old sister speaks the language wayy better than her.

Or at least, polish up her acting skills..she needs them more than English. Her recent drama is a total flop. Nevertheless, we fans still love SGH!

    @ Alex

    English IS universal.
