Of course, it wasn’t a recent issue. However, Tablo shared a few of his childhood stories at the taping of his brother Dave’s EBS show, ‘Star English‘ on the 9th. During the taping, Tablo and Dave shared stories of the rapper’s childhood love with a little German girl next door, part-time jobs, school and life growing up as a minority. During the taping, Tablo didn’t hesitate to share his funny yet sad experience of wetting his pants while delivering newspapers either.
To come to think of it, I don’t why but when I was young I really wanted to deliver newspapers. But it was really difficult because there were so many places to deliver the papers to. Once I had to deliver papers on a rainy day and had the urge to use the restroom really bad. I couldn’t hold it in any longer and went to the nearest house that caught my eye and asked if I could use the restroom. Maybe it was because I was a little Asian kid that was soaking wet in the rain but they refused to let me use their restroom. Eventually I finished delivering all the papers and on my way home I just relieved myself in my pants. I cried a lot that day…
But really, who would actually let a stranger in to use the restroom? Would you? Probably not.
Tablo went on to share hurt-filled stories of his life as an immigrant in Canada including the racism he had to endure at school.
My life as a foreign exchange student didn’t go so smoothly either because of racism. The first day I went to school some student’s tied me to a tree and beat me up. I was given all sorts of names and insults you could ever imagine being said to an Asian and those names followed me everywhere. After returning to Korea and finishing highschool, I returned to America to attend college but things hadn’t really changed much. People weren’t openly as racist as they were in the past but there were still people that viewed and treated Asian’s differently subconsciously and discreetly.
To hear Tablo’s full story of his life before Epik High, be sure to tune in to Dave’s EBS ‘Star English‘ show on June 19th and 26th.

h
so sad, love tablo :
At least now, (the part of Canada Im in) its very multicultural, so there isnt really a lot of race issues against asians going on.
Its sad though.
oh where because i want to go to Canada next year!..^__^
* I meant to say, Its sad that he had to endure that much of pain when he was young.
aww.. (first)
aww
poor tablo….
no offense but koreans are racists too you know.
Yeah, but not toward other Koreans…for the most part.
LOL Im sure Canadians aren’t racist towards fellow Canadians as well…
i dunt know hu this guy is, but racism in CANADA??
what year was he here, Canada, bcuz im an immigrant (although not Asian) but i havent seen any of the kids in my high school getting beat up or name calleed… that must of been terrible.. he shulda came to my school… we’re the immigrant town of the whole city ;P
lolz anyways that sucks but heyy.. hu ever he is he seems to be doing fine now.. i mean on a show.. anyway pyce byee
Ahhh I know how Tablo oppa feels. Although I was born and raised in America… I feel the racism all the time and it IS very hush-hush. I go to a university that is pretty diverse but all the “minorities” are still indirectly discriminated.
I’m scared when I go study abroad in Korea… that I’ll be discriminated against because I’m American and hella dark ):
Estee, don’t be scared to study abroad. Actually, study abroad in Korea was one of the most memorable times of my life. Don’t worry about being discriminated over there, youll meet alot of Koreans from all over and other people besides Koreans as well that are all open to KOrean culture. It was definitely a mind opener for me. If i was you and you have the rsources, you should definitely go! trust me! damn great experince ever!
I absolutely adore Tablo! He’s so smart and funny!
My kind of guy…..
“The first day I went to school some student’s tied me to a tree and beat me up.”
To be fair, that’s probably because he’s really geeky and shrimpy looking. When I went to high school all the kids getting beat up were the small loners, regardless of ethnicity.
Anyway, the moral of the story is children are jackasses.
Shut the f*ck up Oliver. Shut up.
Tablo, it’s not like you’re not racist or anything.
Tablo!!! That’s so sad! I live in Canada, and I grew up here as well, although my parents were both born in… well… Germany XD. I’m really sad that you lived in a part that was racist. Where I live is really multicultural (there are more foreigners at my school than Canadians). I’m sorry that he had to deal with stupid people. XD I wish i knew them, id pick their butts for you! People like that don’t deserve it.
i didn’t know asians are bullied abroad. that’s unfair. i am asian. and asian look more appealing than ****..
That’s some pretty violent racism in whatever part of Canada he lived. I’m glad it’s a distant memory for him. Though, it’s a shame that racism, or at the very least, prejudice still live on in most if not all people.
And tell me why the guy next to him looks like he’s planning something crazy.
WOW! I didn’t notice that until I read your comment, and I started laughing as soon as I scrolled up to look at the picture again!
Ahahahaha!
LMAO AHAHAHHAHAHAAHHA!! well done kezrel lmao!
WTF?!
He lived in Canada?! Haha, I live here too, and baisicly everybody in my school is Asian.
Anyways, gosh, people that are like that really, really piss me off. Ugh, I can’t belive this still goes on in some places. HAVE PEOPLE NOT WOKEN UP, DO THEY NOT UNDERSTAND?! We’re all human, for gosh sakes!
I guess not, people in my school aren’t openly racist. Well, in my school I haven’t seen or felt that anyone was racist towards asians.
You’re lucky, a school full of asians…all you need now are some spanish people and that would be the best school ever!
ugh, funny how it’s usually only one race that’s racist towards all the others.
poor tablo,
i suppose it’s pretty hard to adapt to places which are full of others which are not your type ..
woah… i live in Canada, and i’m currently studying at the same university he did (UBC in Vancouver).. and i’m gonna have to disagree with the racism part.
i’m asian, but i was never treated differently coz of the color of my skin. and if you take a walk around the university, it’s hella “colorful” (i don’t mean any offense with that remark).. it’s very multi-cultural, and there’s A WHOLE LOT of exchange students. every ethnicity even has their own club to promote their respective cultures within the campus.
but then again, all that happened to him ages ago.. but still, though.. UBC is a great school when it comes to promoting diversity.. so it’s kinda weird that something like this happened to him in the past.. =S
I’m born around the same generation as Tablo and I first immigrated to Vancouver in the late 80’s. North Van to be exact. Yeah there was some racism towards me, that was the first time I found out what a “gook” and a “chink” was. That was in elementry school. However it was totally different when I moved down to Vancouver.
That’s horrible! I hope it hasn’t scarred you or Tablo for life!
awww.. :[
yeah I live in Vancouver too. most of the high schools around here are nearing majority Asian students. UBC isn’t much different… it isn’t called “University of a Billion Asians” for no reason… waha. one time i was at a school competition where our team was mostly asian, and this team from another part of canada said about our group with rude intentions: “i know that group’s from vancouver because they’re all asian.” i loled.
wtf!!! LOL…
Tablo, you are so honest.. LMAO
Omg, I am so ashamed for the US (where I live). If I met an Asian here I wouldn’t treat them any differently. Besides, most of them are hot!^^ I’m sorry that Tablo had to go through that.
Yeah, they are! Spanish people are, too. I get racism towards spanish people (where I live). Then again I think I have a total of 4-5 asians in my grade, maybe 10-15 for my entire school (we have over 300 students).
JUST BECAUSE THERE ARE A LOT OF ASIANS IN A PLACE DOESNT MEAN RACISM DOESNT EXIST…
Diversity, multiculturalism and all that is just a facade to the deeper problems that exist in Canada when it comes to whiteness and white privilege and racism.
sigh, its more sad when minorities fool themselves into believing its all good now because white people ‘accept’ us into their culture.
what happens is that white people will TOLERATE minorities… why the hell should we be TOLERATED, like we’re some animals? they ‘put up’ with our presence and just DEAL with it.
Sigh, take some classes/go study about the deep racism thaT STILL exists in Canada before saying it doesn’t exist or that it has died down.
so what tablo went through STILL happens today, believe it or not. you just don’t hear about it as much
EVERYONE SHOULD BE AGREEING WITH HANNAHLOVE.
Racism is still rampant within our society. Don’t fool yourself into thinking that it’s gone.
White people definitely just *tolerate* minorities. Recent killing of a 14 yr old kid in my neighborhood by a gang of other kids (they didn’t intend to kill him, just beat him up… the boy end up hitting his head on something and died) has suddenly made white people speak up about their suspicions of blacks. They just automatically assume that gang = black people.
This story received coverage on Good Morning America. Can you believe it? No offense at all to him or his family (may they all rest easy soon), but JUST because this happened in SUBURBIA it got headline news. Why? THE MEDIA CONTROLS WHAT THEY WANT YOU TO SEE. Racism is still heavily instilled in this.
What about all those killings in urban life? Why don’t they get headline coverage???
Because suburbia = white = “safe.”
They think that just this shouldn’t happen in the suburbs. Media also over dramatizes things.
ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS QUESTION YOUR SOURCES, CHECK FOR BIASES.
/lecture
ALSO. I’m not saying that all whites are like this. But much of America is still lead but traditional, elitist, and prejudiced people.
Awww poor Tablo but I think things must’ve changed alot now O_O
When I came to CA I got alot of racism on me too
In elementary skoolPeople were making fun of my name, how I look, and how I talk (I didn’t know much english when I first came) some guys even tried to beat me up even though I was a girl (I fought back though)
It was really sad,but I learned to be tough and stood up for myself.
I think racism is really immature and people should just share this world together no matter what color skin you have… but I guess that’s particully impossible isn’t it? -_-”
Just yesterday when I was walking home passing this high skool some guys kept making sounds at me and calling me a “chino”
racism does exist. there is no doubt in my mind it does but i think tablo is stretching it a bit.
Poor Tablo…
Hey, if he lived in Canada, does that mean he knows at least some French??
That’d be so cool… =]
There’s no one I love more than Tablo in Kpop! He’s so honest and genuine and you really can’t help but love someone who’s so smart and funny!
ALSO. I’m not saying that all whites are like this. But much of America is still lead but traditional, elitist, and prejudiced people.
Racism is everywhere .. I’m from canada( quebec) .. i got bullied when i was in elementary ..
Poor him. So sad. Having racism in the world!
ugh, theres so much racism in the world :/ i would know – -” although i wasn’t tied to a tree and beat up…
