A new “faceless” ballad singer, U, is causing quite the stir in Korea with the sultry MV teaser for her new song, “Suddenly“(울컥). The teaser clip was released on numerous online music sites this past weekend and has garnered a lot of attention due to the girl on girl lip action in the clip. Although the controversial MV may have the caught the eyes of many netizens, the “faceless” singer’s crisp vocals were also able to catch the ears of the netizens, triggering the curiosity of many. I decided to do a little research on this “faceless” singer because her voice sounded so familiar, and it turns out that U isn’t so “faceless” after all.

Back in 2004, the mysterious singer actually sang a song called “Miracle“ for the SBS program, “I like Sunday-Banjun Drama,” under the name of May (not to be mistaken for MayBee). Here’s a clip of the song for those of you that are curious or just need to jog your memory (please disregard the fangirly Naruto related pictures).

Looks like U and her company chose a very good marketing tactic this time around because her lesbian concept has allowed her to shed her old image, or what little image she had. Sure, there’s been groups in the past that have used this concept and failed, but it looks like U incorporated the concept well with her new ballad track and this has allowed her to gain more attention in the past few days than she has in the past five years. Here’s a clip of the MV teaser of the song “Suddenly” , which will be released as a mini-album on July 7th.

Will U’s lip-locking ways make it this time or just end up being a flop?

Christ, when is this terrible “pretending to be gay to get attention” trend going to die off? I’m sure real homosexuals are thrilled knowing their sexuality has been reduced to a marketing ploy.

    If she’s not gay, then she’s pretending to be it. It’s one or the other, there’s no in between. I hope she is becuase otherwise she is exploting a group of people. A group of people who don’t even have all their rights and deal with hardships that striaght people dont have to usually deal with, mind you.
    It reminds me of the Bubble Girls, not as bad becuase the Bubble Girls were sterotypes of Black people (and putting them down). The Bubble Girls got attention for basically being in Black Face and showing off…
    
    If this girl isn’t gay, that’s what she’s doing. Minus the black face and add the girl-on-gril action.

i really don’t think that in conservative korea, she’ll even come out even if she is gay. She’s probably just using lesbianism as a marketing ploy and the mv will be like one of those story/movie-like mv’s about this couple. Who knows? Maybe it’ll bring more tolerance to homosexuality…. unfortunately, probably not though.
