Girls Generation’s “Genie” doesn’t get a break

girlsgeneration_rhianna_090623
In addition to Nazi/Kamikaze allegations, Girls’ Generation is now caught.. stealing?

Is it just me and my over analytical ears or does the beat for “genie” sound ridiculously similar to Rihanna’s hit “Please don’t stop the music?” Although many say Korean pop is in itself a copy of Western entertainment, Korea isn’t very fond of copycats. Case in point: Lee Hyori’s “Dark Angel” days.

Are the Girls taking tips from Hyori or is this just a coincidence? Listen for yourself:

Girls Generation, “Genie”

Rihanna”s “Please don’t stop the music”

Lee Hyori’s Dark angel

Britney Spear’s Do somethin’

Hyori’s sure sounds similar to Spears’ but I don’t think Girls Generations’ does..

    • 2 daisy June 24, 2009 at 6:16 am

  5. 10 eymasar June 24, 2009 at 1:05 am

i dont think so… genie is way different…

  6. 11 Um June 24, 2009 at 1:07 am

    It doesn’t really sound similiar….at all. (SNSD-Rihanna)
    o_o

  7. 12 shinda88 June 24, 2009 at 1:10 am

I dont think the beat is same. I mean, got differences in their music. Anyway, I still like Genie and surprise is, I like it more than Genie hahaha (^__^)

  8. 13 rhee! June 24, 2009 at 1:10 am

yesss! the first time i heard it i knew something is similar, I even thought it was ‘Disturbia’. And @ :53 it sounds like Insomnia by Craig david.

  9. 14 Jungdam June 24, 2009 at 1:12 am

I think the initial beat does sound a bit similar…

  10. 15 lies June 24, 2009 at 1:17 am

Not really. Unless you want to accuse Suju’s Why I Like You of copying off Rihanna as well.

Also, the Nazi accusations are ridiculous. A closeup of Sooyoung’s eagle shows that the eagle doesn’t have a swatzsika on it at all and Hyoyeon’s cross is the freakin’ VICTORIAN CROSS, not the Nazi Iron cross. Netizens are morons.

    • 16 haku June 24, 2009 at 1:54 am

what about the japanese plane? nice how you didnt mention that.

      • 17 jaefer June 24, 2009 at 2:00 am

you can even go on to say that it wasn’t a japanese plane, seeing as it completely lacked the japanese flag. they’re similar, yes, but not the same

        • 18 coconutllime June 24, 2009 at 2:32 am

well on closer inspection yes it does have the signature red sun insignia on the wings from japanese fighter planes.

and besides even without the swastika just the eagle in that position holding the circle is iconic. they should have used a different eagle insignia/should have known better.

        • 19 haku June 24, 2009 at 6:31 am

jaefer, do some more research before you post because your bias towards snsd is showing. they just photoshopped the japanese flag out and put in their own design. yet, if you look closer it has the japanese flag on its wing. does that make it a japanese plane to you now or will you still ignore it? hahahahahaha

      • 21 .... June 24, 2009 at 4:12 am

it DID have the japanese flag on the WING,I guess someone forgot to ps that too lol.

      • 22 lies June 24, 2009 at 11:25 am

that was a mistake but SM is editing that out. Nice you didn’t mention that, insane SNSD hater.

  11. 23 Y June 24, 2009 at 1:25 am

It is slightly similar but come on, it’s just a rhythm for goodness’ sake. And it’s not, like, exactly the same.

  12. 24 sophia June 24, 2009 at 1:30 am

i don’t think the beat is the same…i love “genie” :] i’m not surprised that it’s #1 in the charts. and i hope you erase this article before some crazy netizen reads it and makes a big deal lol

  13. 25 kk June 24, 2009 at 1:36 am

Maybe the beat is the same but I don’t think the lyrics are.

    • 26 haku June 24, 2009 at 1:57 am

the initial beat does sound like rihannas song but again, its nothing new or suprising. When youre talking about SM they always bite other music. just look at the remake band shinee

  14. 27 tofu June 24, 2009 at 1:56 am

perhaps the beats are used, but many songs have that kind of rhythm. Genie shouldn’t be the same as Dark Angel because it sounds nowhere near like Rihanna’s music.

  15. 28 jaefer June 24, 2009 at 1:59 am

everyone’s getting so nitpicky with songs & their beats. beats are beats, you can only make so many combinations before one starts sounding like the other. hyori’s looked like britney spears’ mv and everything. but snsd doesnt. it’s like how people are accusing dbsk’s stand by u of coping eamon’s i dont wnat you back. can people just stop trying to find faults and just enjoy music? and how can you call it copying when the lyrics are completely different. for me to accuse someone of plagarism, i expect them to copy not just hte beat, but the lyrics as well.

  16. 29 Elephantscream June 24, 2009 at 2:00 am

Of course this was copied. Really everything is copied off of everything nowadays.. Especially in Korea.. Just recently, this song, and Suju’s “Sorry Sorry” ripped off of Lady Gaga, 2NE1’s video, etc. etc. etc. Really though, not that this is right, but it’s not a big deal cause so many people have done it. Yawn.

  17. 30 giselle June 24, 2009 at 2:35 am

it really does sound like hyori’s
    Dark Angel.. :|

  18. 31 lemonick June 24, 2009 at 2:41 am

I don’t think it’s a problem when artists use the same beats in a different way (it happens all the time). I don’t think beats and rhythms are copyrighted…so no big deal. It doesn’t seem full on plagarism (doesn’t copy the Michael Jackson sample, doesn’t have similar lyrics, doesn’t have similar melody, doesn’t have similar MV, etc). More like trying hard to take on this Western style. And as for this military style…heck, it’s been used by a lot in many music subcultures…like Japanese Visual Kei..and especially Michael, Latoya and Janet Jackson have used military image.

  19. 32 Sandra June 24, 2009 at 2:44 am

well to me the initial beat of “genie” sounds familiar to “please don’t stop the music”, but after the first few seconds, that they go at a separate rhythm. and also, beats are beats. there are only so many beats that can be produced. and did any1 even mention that rihanna’s beat copied michael jackson’s? i dont find it a big deal.

  20. 33 yunjae-thelove; June 24, 2009 at 3:03 am

i’m not a fan nor anti, but i really don’t see or hear the similarity with snsd and rihanna’s song :l

  21. 34 aya June 24, 2009 at 3:03 am

    oh SHUT UP POPSEOUL!!!!!!!!!
With ur stuped comments and ur jealousy to girls
It’s getting really anoying. Stop trashing them

  22. 35 zoom June 24, 2009 at 3:09 am

they took a rhythm that’s been used many times before and made it their own with their song. that’s all.

  23. 36 Liz June 24, 2009 at 3:21 am

It’s “similar” but just barely. It’s not a copy cat at all. I would’ve never guessed that Please Don’t Stop the Music and Genie had the same beat and tune.

  24. 37 BLACKANESE June 24, 2009 at 3:24 am

    loool
    rhiana??
    loooooooooool
    it does at da beginnin….kinda…

  25. 38 azn123x June 24, 2009 at 4:42 am

    I don’t really think it matters…
idk y people hate them, but celebraties around the world plagerizes and have done worst than this

  26. 39 BKJSuh June 24, 2009 at 4:45 am

blah blah blah blah blah. Over analyzing again? Popseoul, sometimes you are worse than those “netizens” you always criticize about.

  27. 40 kitsune26 June 24, 2009 at 5:02 am

is there ANY originality in Korea?? LAME!

  28. 41 DannyTruong June 24, 2009 at 5:09 am

    I don’t think so.
Ears anyone? Peoples eyes are sure good to point out the WWII imagery, but peoples ears are rusty.

Rihannas don’t stop them music is transposed much higher
and has more notes hitting before raising an interval
while the Genie track hits once, pauses then raises a higher interval. The track is transposed lower too.
Theres hardly anything to gawk at here.

  29. 42 Taylor June 24, 2009 at 5:10 am

It doesnt matter…because the producers of “Please Dont Stop the Music” sampled the beat or some of the lyrics from Michael Jackson’s “Starting Something”. Plus it doesnt come close to sounding the same. Its a cycle…an artist or producer will always sample or “copy” something from another fellow artist or producer.

  30. 43 smiley June 24, 2009 at 5:16 am

    yeb!!!!girls generation copied it

  31. 44 icey June 24, 2009 at 5:21 am

I think the Hyori song you want to compare to Britney’s is Get Ya not Dark Angel…

As for SNSD’s song, in my opinion it isn’t enough to warrant slapping on label for copying. (Although when I first heard their song I thought it sounded something like BoA would do.) If it’s something as obvious such as the Hyroi-Britney scandal, then yea say something about it. However, if it’s going to be something like stretching a connection to bad mouth others, forget it. We are now living in a globalization era, ideas and even music will be exchanged. Cross culture = not a bad thing. Get used to it.

  32. 45 maisoui June 24, 2009 at 5:25 am

Everyone here is gay. Genie doesn’t sound anything like these other songs.

  33. 46 liz June 24, 2009 at 5:50 am

That beat for Rihanna and GG has been used for many years. It’s a dance beat. Everyone samples other peoples music to make a hit. If it sound the same though, that’s when it gets annoying.

  34. 47 flopseoul June 24, 2009 at 5:56 am

Everyone knows Korean pop grounds just copy western pop. If you’re trying to pretend they don’t you will just make yourself look stupid.

  35. 50 marie June 24, 2009 at 5:57 am

SNSD are followed by some kind of curse!!

  36. 51 Me June 24, 2009 at 6:18 am

Honestly, I don’t think it sounds similar at all…

  37. 52 Ally June 24, 2009 at 6:36 am

While the first beat might be the same, the tunes and the songs are completely different. Besides, if everything used a different beat, then we’d run out of beats to use. It’s just amazing that new things are coming out these days as we use up more and more tunes, rhythms, and patterns.

  38. 53 AA-CHAN June 24, 2009 at 7:19 am

These netizens get all over it before it’s release and then eat it up when it starts playing all over the place.

  39. 54 anna June 24, 2009 at 7:56 am

genie does sound like please, don’t stop the music…. but meh i don’t really care i still like it!

  40. 55 Jeydi! June 24, 2009 at 8:00 am

Actually I’m not really a fan of SNSD. BUT..even if the beats and some other things might be simular,i think man there are a million songs on earth..and here and there will always be some songs which are very close. If really copied ,Rihanna’s Fans should just take it with humour and feel flattered.I’m also not a big Fan of RiRi ,but Please don’t stop the music(and generally her music)is very cool.I think ´Genie´won’t hit it as ´Gee´ anyway..let’s just wait and see.All in all i don’t really care anyway, just had to say it(sorry for writing so much!)..I LOVE HYORI:) (fu*k of dark angel,it’s path-she’s THE sexy queen anyway;D)

  41. 56 Heylie June 24, 2009 at 8:01 am

I’ve listened to Don’t Stop the Music a billion times for about a year or more now. And I can say, that the song sounds nothing like “Genie”. This is dumbass anti’s overanalyzing things.

I can definitely get Hyori’s “Dark Angel” and Do Somethin’ similaritys, but the other two songs sound nothing alike. I don’t even think the beat sounds alike, it’s freaking ridiculous.

  42. 57 coolbeanss8 June 24, 2009 at 8:16 am

it’s not that big of a deal.
