Girls Generation’s “Genie” doesn’t get a break

girlsgeneration_rhianna_090623
In addition to Nazi/Kamikaze allegations, Girls’ Generation is now caught.. stealing?

Is it just me and my over analytical ears or does the beat for “genie” sound ridiculously similar to Rihanna’s hit “Please don’t stop the music?” Although many say Korean pop is in itself a copy of Western entertainment, Korea isn’t very fond of copycats. Case in point: Lee Hyori’s “Dark Angel” days.

Are the Girls taking tips from Hyori or is this just a coincidence? Listen for yourself:

Girls Generation, “Genie”

Rihanna”s “Please don’t stop the music”

Lee Hyori’s Dark angel

Britney Spear’s Do somethin’

ok…first of all…popseoul!!!stop making such a big deal over it!! and guys come on if korean people copy white peoples music styles and your just gonna get all catty…why do you even post and listen to the music.if youre just gonna say its all a copy than go listen to something else.

    • 2 [!] June 24, 2009 at 12:04 pm

Rhiana isn’t white and the style of music they used isn’t “white” either. In fact, historically, that can’t be assoicated with one race. It’s a good and even mix of Black and white music (with Black influences such as Aretha Franklin, atleast the earlier pop which evolved into what it is now)…but hey, I’ll stop with the history lesson.

And there’s nothing wrong with having a bit of constructive crit. or pointing out possible plagarism. It’s worse if they did plagarise, there’s nothing neg. about quesitoning an artist sources.

Either way, they produced a good song that this ex-anti liked, but it’s a dissapiontment to hear that there is even a possiblity of plagarism.

        yeaa seriouslyy.

        Give me a break.

In that case, all the rock/pop/hip-hop acts in Europe, Japan, China, the Middle East, Africa, etc. are “copies” of American rock, pop and hip-hop.

As for the whole military-look, that has been done many times by entertainers – going all the way back to the Andrews Sisters (probably before that even).

Yeah, I guess there is some vague resemblance to beats and such (but most of this type of pop music is pretty generic and interchangeable) and is nothing like the outright lifting that (for example) Avril Lavigne did w/ the chorus of The Rubinoo’s 1979 single “I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend” on her hit song “Girlfriend” or it’s similarities w/ Toni Basil’s song “Mickey.”

        • 5 hellothere June 25, 2009 at 3:35 am

you’re yet another person who cant think. Music doesn’t belong to anyone. anyone from anywhere can compose any genre of music that they want to. But when you blatantly copy a song that someone else has already made, then there’s a problem. There is nothing wrong with being Japanese and singing hip-hop. but when you call yourself a celebrity singer and then call some tupac song your own, it’s just dumb. And that’s what alot of korean singers seem to be doing now days. And id also like to point out that Japan, middleast, Africa, china, and europe have their own twist on the music they make. You just dont know anything. Listen to adelle, that is european style pop. and listen to hiplife from africa, nothing like what the koreans are doing, which is copying other peoples music!

tortally AGREED. it pisses me off when people Claim music is theirs

Well put! There’s a fine line between being inspired and actually taking something. I find that a lot of Kpop nowadays are lifted. Bring me back some SES and BabyVox!

    noooooooooooooooooooot really. :<

  3. 11 tonii June 24, 2009 at 10:35 am

so i was not alone with the idea…it does sound like Rihanna’s song at the beginning but heck, this is SNSD, their fans will still like them and the song.I like the song too.hehehe…..

  4. 12 vegetable June 24, 2009 at 10:39 am

it sounds quite similar but nott sooo similar to that extend. The chorus’s totally different. except for they share the same beat. its not that badd. But one thing’s that for sure, please dont stop the music is so much wayyy better than genie. I kinda got sick of hearing genie after just like 10 times?

    • 13 clairol June 24, 2009 at 12:11 pm

hahahah yup! i got sick afer listening to it 3 times, not 10 times.
i mean whats with the stupid random giggling at some parts and at the end of the song
please dont stop the music is way nicer than genie.

  5. 14 PMAC June 24, 2009 at 10:54 am

Lol, since when was the bass on quarter note original? It might sound similar to Rihanna’s song, but both are very basic beats to begin with. Rihanna’s beat is nothing super original anyways.

  6. 15 Seoulk June 24, 2009 at 11:04 am

Agree. Rihanna’s song is boilerplate. No one can really be accused of “copying” something so generic.

  7. 17 yunie June 24, 2009 at 11:11 am

    vegetable
    we’re same
    but i tottaly sick
    of the music
    after listened it twice
    not 10 to=imes
    like u did
    but…
    GEE is much8
    better
    than
    GENIE
    sorry guys/SNSD fans

  8. 18 Kira June 24, 2009 at 11:43 am

First of all, Rihanna sampled “Wanna be starting something” by MJ for this song…. and Genie does sound similar to it…

  9. 19 Yvonne June 24, 2009 at 11:53 am

this beat is sick! you could actually dance to it… unlike gee ><

  10. 20 rapha24mt June 24, 2009 at 1:21 pm

other than the bass drum’s melody at the back, nth’s similar. i feel

  11. 21 K June 24, 2009 at 2:02 pm

I didn’t notice that but yeah the beat is similar. I dont really listen much of Genie because I know it’s the kind of song I’ll get easily tired of listening. It’s nice though SNSD fans! It’s like It’s You by suju.. I really liked the song but never realized I would get tired of it soo easily. So.. to not make the same mistake, I would not repetitively listen to genie lol coz I know after a few listens, I’ll get bored of it -.-

  12. 22 ako June 24, 2009 at 2:19 pm

oiii… wak nio ganyanin c rihanna hahahahaha

  13. 23 jjbobina June 24, 2009 at 3:46 pm

it doesn’t sound that much alike.
maybe in like a few seconds of the song but no.

  14. 24 lalala June 24, 2009 at 3:54 pm

    omggg this is ridiculous
    those netizans need a LIFE
and who cares, the beat or something may be alike? but concepts are always shared, afterall its all pop music..

  15. 25 aine June 24, 2009 at 5:38 pm

.i really don’t think that the beats are the same. i mean come on ..if you listen to thousands of songs then you will say oh this one sounds like the other..hmmmm music styles can be the same but there are still things that can make one’s music original and unique..

  16. 26 TruthHurts June 24, 2009 at 6:02 pm

It sounds quite similar, but the rest of the song is different so ill let it slide. And its certainly not on Hyroi’s level of stealing(get ya and do something)lol

  17. 27 japanfan June 24, 2009 at 6:50 pm

I’m not sure if it’s Lee Hyori’s “Dark Angel” that sounded similar to Britney Spears’ song. Shouldn’t it be Hyori’s “Get Ya”? They have about the same beat.

  18. 28 imagirl' June 24, 2009 at 6:51 pm

WHAT EVER! ITS NONSENSE! TOPIC!!!!!! GIRLS GENERATION! IS NOT HOT ISSUE!!! 4MINUTES AND 2NE1 ARE HOT ISSUE! NOW’… GIRLS GENERATION ARE TRASH! JUNK!

  19. 31 .LING June 24, 2009 at 8:05 pm

    OMG. give it up alr.
let SNSD have their way. at least we have 2NE1.

  20. 32 lalala June 24, 2009 at 8:11 pm

what is this nonsense. the two songs dont sound ANYTHING alike.

  21. 33 shieri June 24, 2009 at 8:51 pm

the starting of the song sounded so familiar..

its like rain’s YOU ( track 7 ) in rainism.

  22. 35 Panda4u June 24, 2009 at 9:25 pm

Ngawww who gives a crap whhat or who they copy…they give you music so like it or not they’ll still be there
    Wooo go Girl’s Generation >_<

  23. 36 lol June 25, 2009 at 12:03 am

Sorry i think it’s just you and your over analytical ears. =)
you’re just trying to get some blog hits by creating a hooha out of every lil single thing.

  24. 37 song June 25, 2009 at 12:12 am

    doesn’t sound the same.

  25. 38 Mew June 25, 2009 at 12:27 am

    No song is 100% original.
And I agree with Avril’s girlfriend song being similar to Mickey.
It’s just that so many haters just can’t live without drama and they HAD to point out every itsy bitsy little thing to set some FAIYAH.

  26. 39 hanbitesdog June 25, 2009 at 12:40 am

The songs aren’t remotely similar – even the beat.
So… its a rip of of Rhianna because they both wore the same hat once?
Jeez.. its a hat. From a hat shop.
Don’t like the song much tho. Although to me, it sounds a bit J-pop influenced.

  27. 40 jlee June 25, 2009 at 1:22 am

i dont think snsd copied i mean its just a constant beat

  28. 41 nsj064 June 25, 2009 at 2:27 am

oh please.. its always lyk dis..
erytime a grup or a singer release a new song, dey r always accused of stealing and copying..

    soshi all the way!

  29. 45 splendidvenus June 25, 2009 at 5:06 am

By the Way, I Invite you all, to my blog: fulllyrics.wordpress.com, I have a lot of stuff, SS501, Lee Min Ho, Girl´s Generation and more, videos, photos, biography, We got married episodes, SS501 Solo Collection 1st Episode…. huh, so much more That I can´t tell all!

  30. 46 lalala June 25, 2009 at 5:14 am

i don’t think snsd copied rihanna.. they just have a similar beat, but many songs have the same beat. people are just overreacting.. seriously.

    • 47 haku June 25, 2009 at 6:32 am

maybe people are overreacting to this but it is SM. they are widely known for buying other artists music and put their own lyrics in which does NOT equal originality.

      • 48 hanbitesdog June 25, 2009 at 9:05 am

That’s different from copying a song and pretending its your own. Or sampling a beat. Both those things have been done by artists everywhere for decades.

  31. 49 JinJin June 25, 2009 at 8:33 am

You have to look at the writers. I know a lot of the music companies buy songs from writers from another country. Possibility they happen to be the same writers so sampling the same base beats would happen. DBSK uses a lot of songs written by I believe American writers…

And why are we blaming the singers? They didn’t write the songs. I seriously doubt they have the say over what song they are going to sing…so why are we blaming them? Blame LSM or whoever chose the songs…

  32. 50 itzjustricky June 25, 2009 at 9:16 am

well at least the part where they go genie for ya boy tell me your wish sounds original

  33. 51 DeeDee June 25, 2009 at 5:05 pm

I think Britney’s song and Hyori Lee’s song do sound quite similar…oh well….life goes on..As for SNSD and Rhianna..the hat and song…maybe a little in the beginning of SNSD’S song but after that the song went downhill….

  34. 52 someone_vague June 25, 2009 at 5:20 pm

OMFG. u can’t be serious. U couldn’t find two more possibly DIFFERENT songs. not only are the RHYTHMS different, but so are the lyrics. this isn’t plagiarism, nor another hyori incident. so laaaaaaa different. Christ. netizans just find ANYTHING to up the ratings on their websites. screw them.

  35. 53 Fiona June 25, 2009 at 8:29 pm

just because the beat sounds similar doesn’t mean SNSD copied Rihanna.

now if the MELODY sounded the same then I would consider that plagiarism because a beat is a time unit of music whereas the melody of a song is something you can play around with and make different melodies. Beat is something that you can’t really do much about.

Just because the beat sounds similar, it doesn’t mean they copied other artists.

    Use your brain. For once.

  36. 54 Knick June 26, 2009 at 12:48 am

This makes me wonder if anyone ever cared for BoA’s Valenti sounding too much like Britney’s Let Me Be from a while back.

  37. 55 Knick June 26, 2009 at 12:53 am

Oh. It was BoA’s Double which was similar……VERY SIMILAR>

  38. 56 comic sans June 26, 2009 at 4:15 am

    same genre = similar sounds
    nothing new here…

  39. 57 miira-chaan June 26, 2009 at 4:37 pm

    every song has similarities…
but i can’t seem to seenthe point…on why you make such a fuss out of this matter??..it really dosen’t matter if the music has some similarities with other songs…

you shold really pay attention to the singers’ TALENT…

[[&& i can see that you yourself is an "anti" of snsd...then why bother postiing news about them?..]]

  40. 58 Jane July 8, 2009 at 11:25 am

stupid anti-fans… geez why do u care?? a lotta korean singers copy.. SHINee copied Juliette why dont u write about that? i mean just cuz you dont like SNSD doesnt mean you need to go bashing them.. =.= its kind of annoying . what if you were the singer, you wouldnt want to be crap talked like that.. T.T think about your life instead. havent you copied stuff? it may not be songs but it could be answers, a hair style, a trend.. right??? come on, only jealous people crap talk celebrities like that. think how you would feel if you were talked like that before you crap talk. =.=

    • 59 [!] July 8, 2009 at 12:01 pm

First: They found out they didn’t plagarise…I think.

Second, Just because osmeone disagrees with you doesn’t mean they are anti’s. I’m not a fan of SNSD, but guess what…I like this song. It’s dissapionting to find out that there was even a hint of plagarism.

Third, The thing about “copying” is that it’s NOT okay. If “copying” things were okay, why is it that plagarism can get you kicked out of college? If stealing someones idea’s for a song why is it that poeple sue to get their song and credit/money back? It’s never okay to STEAL someones idea (even if you consider it “borrowing without permission” or “copying”). You can’t compares “copying” a hairstyle to stealing someones song which has their creative rights and was born from their mind and creativity. Copying a hairstyle or a trend is normal…no one has a hold over it. However when you steal someones idea or thought that they produced and make money off of it, you have a problem. Which is why fashion designers or hairstylist who STEAL others ideas (not “copy” them and give them credit) often loose thier career.

If I was talked about after I stole someones song or idea (like Vanillia Ice) I’d feel pretty low…only because people found out how low I really was.

Also, critisim is to be expected when you’re in the public eye. This is what they signed up for when they decided to be fmaous in Korea, however, harassment should not be tolerated.

  41. 60 epiknico July 8, 2009 at 4:06 pm

It was Hyori’s “Get Ya” that supposedly plagiarized Britney’s “Do Somethin’,” not Dark Angel. At least get your accusations straight. O_o

  42. 61 dadoh10 July 13, 2009 at 10:19 am

Basically most of the music today is a plagiarism of other music which is not that of a big deal but, the smart thing is not to make it sound like the original.Mixing different beats from different song make’s a track that most pple will not recognize easily. But taking the original beats and calling it your own is how artist’s get caught with their hand’s in the cookie jar.

  43. 62 mrs jay July 15, 2009 at 1:34 am

    wow!!!!!!!

  44. 63 jaegen August 2, 2009 at 1:00 am

    yeah it does…
but it was just like in rihanna’s case.
She also got the tune and lyrics of some part of her song from michael jackson’s song..
    lol..
but i think its very creative of the composer or wat you call that..
    to put in the tune..

  45. 64 ramonerz August 23, 2009 at 7:15 am

whatever.. they don’t sound alike…. you’re just a hater so you’ll try to look for more mistakes ^_^
