Wondergirls featured in legitimate American press

wondergirls_20090626

Talk about some actual PR.

So far, the American debut of theĀ Wondergirls has just been a lot of word of mouth and internet hype, but that has changed, since the Wondergirls were actually featured in a piece in the Seattle Times. Granted I’m not sure if the article made it in the print version, but nonetheless, it’s solid exposure from a media outlet that is not dedicated to celebrities, entertainment, and pop culture.

The article is basically human interest fluff as it just talks about the Wondergirls as a teenage pop sensation who are just looking forward to being in America. Nothing hard-hitting, scandalous, or particularly newsworthy here. All the girls, except So-hee, offer a quote in their very colloquial ESL English, so it’s another chance for fans to catch a glimpse of their English skills.

Check out the article here.

whoever posted this should check their spelling.

i dont really like their image here, i prefer their “tell me” or “so hot” image, they look more like feminine & real, wigs & matching stuff need to gooo

    • 4 xww June 28, 2009 at 12:33 pm

I totally agreed with you! I love them in so hot because they are each unique with different outfits (example: sohee in jumper, sunye and her long pants).

I rather JYP create an individual style for each of them, rather than making them wearing the same things, and the same hairstyle.

Um, Boa, Rain, and Se7en have all gotten “legitimate” press and look at where they’re at in regards to american success. Not to mention they are a whole lot more tolerable than the WGs! Boy, those tween girls are gonna laugh them off the stage, that is if they actually pay attention to them. Most of the crowd are gonna be buying t-shirts and souvenirs or hanging in the lobby until the main act comes on!

  5. 8 Beckbeck June 27, 2009 at 4:08 pm

    @lalala
Either way, all their “outfits” will get laughed at. Just laying out my firm opinion that they WILL NOT make it here. They’ll be laughed all the way back to Korea

  6. 9 bekki June 27, 2009 at 4:12 pm

    yes its in print!
i just read it in the NWTICKET section of the seattletimes,
they’re on the front page of that section and they have a full page feature!
    i’m happy for the wondergirls(:

  7. 10 loveissoshinee June 27, 2009 at 4:41 pm

just be glad that they are mention somewhere peeps.
    fighting WG!!!

  8. 11 Ree June 27, 2009 at 5:24 pm

    The article was printed :)

It surprised me during my lunch hour because I was NOT expected Sohee’s face peering up at me. I could take a picture of it for ref or something

  9. 12 Lin June 27, 2009 at 5:27 pm

They’re trying very hard to hit the US market with their Korean-English version of ‘Nobody’ and the wigs & outfits. Rather than coming up with different versions of ‘Nobody’, why can’t they record new songs? Stop going round and round this song. New songs please!

    • 13 yup June 28, 2009 at 8:38 pm

exactly! can they just stop with the song already and just move on? do they just want to be remembered for this cheesy song 5 yrs down the road?

  10. 14 miira-chaan June 27, 2009 at 5:37 pm

    wg fighting.!~

at least they COULD look good in their outfits..~

besides..if those outfits were chosen for them by their manager then..they can’t complain…

  11. 15 ehsna June 27, 2009 at 6:01 pm

WONDER GIRLS FIGHTING!!!!God bless these girls!!

  12. 16 saranghaehyunjoong June 27, 2009 at 6:32 pm

    fighting!

  13. 17 JJ June 27, 2009 at 7:15 pm

Good luck to them. However… I recall watching a vid posted on Popseoul where they claimed they were popular in places like Japan and China. Is this really true? If I went to those places, would I hear their music played on the radio or their faces on billboards all over the country? I’m having trouble figuring out just how much of an Asian pop “sensation” they are. Because if they’re not even that popular in Asia, would it be premature for them to try to conquer the US?

I’m sure they’re popular in Thailand though… Thailand seems to just loooove and eat up everything K-pop. hahahahaha.

  14. 18 hi June 27, 2009 at 7:18 pm

They kind of look ugly in that picture

  15. 19 hyunnie June 27, 2009 at 7:25 pm

    congratz!

  16. 20 Michelle June 27, 2009 at 11:17 pm

does it have to be scandalous to be a news article? it’s informative and unbiased obviously.

but yea they’re starting their tour in Dallas? awesome!

  17. 22 joelib June 27, 2009 at 11:38 pm

    Grats WG!!

Good luck to them..concert tonight in Portland!!

  18. 23 minmin June 28, 2009 at 3:12 am

I heard the english version of Nobody…I was’nt able to finish the whole song bec. it sucks big time!

I don’t understand Korean but I love the original version better way better…

  19. 24 minmin June 28, 2009 at 3:17 am

I’d watched a youtube fan eng.version and the lyrics OF nOBODY and the sound are way better that the wonder girls weird!

sERIOUSLY THEY NEED to practice their english more>>>

I think JYP is rushing it and the outcome is terrible!

    • 25 haeyeon June 28, 2009 at 8:43 pm

uh huh, i second that. the english one was OK. but i could only make out their singing when i listened hard enough. nobody is gonna bother peeling their ears out for the exact lyrics, they are gonna get irritated and just turn it off. trying to debut in USA with this song is a big mistake. at least take a year off to learn the english language properly first -.-

  20. 26 iheartsandy June 28, 2009 at 3:57 am

I heard a lot of people already criticized wonder girls because of ‘I want nobody nobody but Jew’ chorus.

  21. 29 Tin June 28, 2009 at 5:07 am

When an opportunity comes along, you have to be prepared to accept it and meet the demands of it. This opportunity with the Jonas Brothers came along, which is good, but the WGs are not at all prepared. What good is an opportunity when you go into it ill prepared and it’s a total disaster?

    • 30 black_angel21 June 28, 2009 at 6:59 am

i know what you mean, but the jonas brother fan base if very young and very “disney” if you will so they will need to bring in the energy.

  22. 31 black_angel21 June 28, 2009 at 6:15 am

i wish them the best of luck but i hope they don`t have a problem fitting into the western market with their image and style. the west loves sexy not cute lol

  23. 33 DeeDee June 28, 2009 at 8:17 am

I personally hope they do make it…bring back the clean cut female..but it won’t happen as long as there are Beyonce’s, Britney’s, Lady GaGa’s and so on out there this group will probably have a hard time..Hopefully a lot of Asian people will be there to support them to the fullest..
I think the Jonas Brothers will definitely support them to the fullest..They should since the brothers already have been in their country so it’s only fair on their part to help these young girls out. Jonas wants clean cut entertainment so here it is ..WONDERGIRLS…I am up for new entertainment. Especially if it’s from another country. That is always interesting.

UUUHHH SIDE NOTE HERE: WILL JOE JONAS DROP HIS CURRENT GIRLFRIEND OVER THE PHONE AND HOOK UP WITH ONE OF THE WONDERGIRL’S??????

    • 34 skimfan June 28, 2009 at 10:12 am

Why in the world would Joe Jonas want one of the WGs!? He wouldn’t be able to communicate with her!

      • 35 +_+ June 28, 2009 at 11:21 am

What!?! The Wonder Girls are cute and definitely nice-looking but I think the WG are not Joe’s ideal girlfriend. Not a die-to fan of the JoBros but that’s what I think. :D

  24. 36 mimi June 28, 2009 at 8:29 am

please….im one of their fans but please just go back to korea already. do they think they can impress america with this and nobody sucks.

  25. 37 Dovey June 28, 2009 at 8:54 am

From reading the article, it seems their usage of the English language seems fine, but I have no clue as to how they sound while speaking it. XD Makes me wonder now.

  26. 38 amandan June 28, 2009 at 9:18 am

I want to see an Asian artist make it in the States, just not the Wonder Girls. I do not want them to represent the Asians.

  27. 39 +_+ June 28, 2009 at 11:19 am

    Wonder Girls fighting!

They are really talented, really cute and they look nice. They deserve to be noticed in America and I don’t think they will be laughed up or anything. Maybe some bad comments but not a criticism of nonsense and stuff.

But as soon as the top American pop sensation divas exists, it’s gonna be tough for them to reach an international pop career. Goodluck WG!!

  28. 40 shrekraid June 28, 2009 at 11:27 am

I live in thailand they got good coverage but not mega .
As for copying songs i guess its monkey see monkey do! my thai girlfriend 23 doesnt rate them!

  29. 41 coffy73 June 28, 2009 at 12:29 pm

I’ve seen two separate twitter pages from Jonas fans who were covering the concert tonight that said the following about the WGs:

“wtf”, “Who the heck are the ‘Wonder girls’ and why are they on this stage?”, and my personal favorite, “That was probably one of the weirdest things i’ve ever seen…”. Another tweeted “Who are these people” and “Stupid Wondergirls F U!”. Yeah, they made an impression alright, but I don’t think the right one, lol!

    • 42 Junsu4eva June 28, 2009 at 1:39 pm

There are actually positive reviews too. Jonas Bros’ fans said that WG were cute and they were good dancers. They had no boos. People applauded loudly.

      • 43 Ian June 28, 2009 at 2:27 pm

I’ve actually read where they received very minor, scattered applauses. Basically, the crowd didn’t know who they were because on 99% of jonas bros. websites and tour sites, including ticket places, the only opening acts listed are Jordin Sparks and Honor Society. If you didn’t know the WGs, you wouldn’t even know they were scheduled! Bought stage time is what it is.

        • 44 Romer Duarte June 28, 2009 at 7:32 pm

Why yes of course. I find them cute, but it just boils down to personal preferences and exposure to media at the end.
Like people who consistently watch out for Jonas Brothers won’t have time for other singers.

    • 45 joelib June 28, 2009 at 1:45 pm

wth do you expect from jonas brothers fans..theyre all white girls who dont care about anyone else than those fhags..theyre not really the one you should be looking to for reviews

  30. 47 P June 28, 2009 at 2:54 pm

I have that article in print. It made my day when I got my paper and they were on the cover for the entertainment section.

  31. 48 snsdFTW!!! June 29, 2009 at 5:39 am

i don’t like how popeoul(IN THE PAST) portrayed wondergirls ina bad light but even theough im a hardcore snsd fan im also a fan of them:D i wish them all the best and i want them to know HATERS COME AND GO BUT TRUE FANS ARE FOREVER~ WG FIGHTING!!!!! <3 your fan~

  32. 49 Maki June 29, 2009 at 7:15 am

Ew..I really almost don’t know how I want the fans to react, there all Jonas fans, I don’t really know how well its going to go, all the girls are going to be waiting to see their “hot jonas brothers” (ew) and probably most are too young to be open minded about a band that is from korea.
    -sigh-

I wish they were making it with another band, it’ll be so weird to have jonas fans converting to Wondergirl fans..ugh.

  33. 50 youbun7 June 29, 2009 at 3:48 pm

They may try to target the Asian-American market over there but won’t work in the majority market. The stereotype is still there that Asian females are whores or sluts deep inside their minds.

  34. 51 Sylv June 29, 2009 at 9:09 pm

Perez Hilton twittered about them if that helps boost their popularity. :p

    • 52 Tin June 30, 2009 at 7:35 am

It doesn’t. If anything it hurts them, especially since Perez has taken a huge credibility hit with that whole will.i.am incident.
