Taiwan remakes “Full House”

fullhouse_20090629Wait~again?

Rain’s breakthrough acting vehicle alongside actress Song Hye-kyo, 2004’s “Full House,” will be remade in Taiwan. The news of the remake is no surprise because of the drama’s enduring popularity, but the thing is…isn’t there already a Taiwanese adaptation of “Full House” called “Smiling Pasta“? The producer of the 2006 Taiwanese idol drama even admitted that it was an adaptation, but no “house contract” and the media playing a larger role as an antagonist.

smilingpasta_20090629The new Taiwanese remake, however, is not exactly a remake of the Korean drama, but rather an adaptation of the original “Full House” manhwa by Won Soo-yon, which is actually quite different from the drama. Taiwan is notorious for being uncreative and producing idol dramas based on Japanese manga and Korean manhwa (Taiwanese people just LOVE comics), so it’s not that big of a stretch.

fullhousemanga_20090629If you’re curious about the Taiwanese casting, it is rumored that the celebrity male lead will be played by baby faced muscle man, Wu Zun, and the spunky female lead with a heart of gold will be played by China’s rising actress, Zhou Xun. The choice of Wu Zun is no surprise because he is incredibly popular right now as a smoldering male lead, but I find it highly implausible that an actress of Zhou Xun’s caliber would actually participate in an idol drama. Yet then again, if she was making bank off this gig, why not sell out a little?

wuzun&zhouxun_20090629

It seems like the story of “Boys Over Flowers” has already had enough drama adaptations, is the industry now moving on to “Full House”?

Believe it or not, Full House will also have a remake in the Philippines, by the TV network GMA 7. The network announced that the actor Richard Gutierrez will play the role of Rain, but the female lead remains a secret. It will be shown in November. Another, even the kdrama Stairway to Heaven will also have a remake by the same network, and popular actor Dingdong Dantes will play the role of Kwon Sang Woo! Even ABS-CBN remake Only You, and the role of Han Chae Young is played by Angel Locsin. What’s happening!! Can they make something original?

  3. 4 russel June 30, 2009 at 8:18 pm

  4. 5 deadly_crazy June 30, 2009 at 8:31 pm

many korean teleseries are remaked here, lovers in paris also was remaked here, the casts are Kc and piolo…it will be aired this coming october i think..

I can’t imagine if the philippines will remake the Boys over flowers…. it’s too much!

    • 6 minna June 30, 2009 at 8:40 pm

it’s only recently that phil. has started doing remakes of local movies & even korean dramas. it’s kind of sickening to me since both gma and abs are at it (due to unending competition bet the 2 channels) so it’s like viewers are being given an overdose of remakes and they seem to suck at it too (take for ex that of angel locsin & kim chiu lol)

(sorry, it seemed i’m being off topic here)

but yeah. philippines is planning to do a version of full house too.

  5. 7 eiram June 30, 2009 at 8:51 pm

the remake here in the Philippines is going off the original… it is kinda confusing… ahaha… but what can we do, they are earning money because of that, right?… But please… I hope our country won’t remake Boys over Flowers… i just can’t imagine how they will be able to do that…

It seems that I am criticizing my own country… but hey it’s the truth…

  6. 8 wiEkz June 30, 2009 at 9:10 pm

U guys just don’t know how the “sinetron” of Indonesia goes.. ckckckc… ^~^

  7. 9 Deajay June 30, 2009 at 9:13 pm

I love Wu Zun and any show with him I’ll watch. I also love Full House and can’t wait for the second one, buta phillipino Full House I don’t know….

  8. 11 HYUNJOONGLOVER** June 30, 2009 at 9:36 pm

Hello ? are you insane ? remaking many of korean movies in the Philippines? Well i don’t think that would be fair. in fact, some filipino actors and actresses do not act that well, and doesn’t look good enough too. I’ve been there once and watch few of it! and it sucks! some of their dramas are more in killing and tragedy. ewwwww. it’s so old school. no originality!
If they remake BOF im sure many people around the world might be in deep anger and madness.
    so quit it, ok.

    • 12 Malware July 1, 2009 at 1:06 am

Hey HYUNJOONGLOVER**, The Korean version of BOF was, what the third version of this drama? So should Japanese and Taiwanese people act in “deep anger and madness” because a Korean version was made of their dramas? Korean dramas are a rip-off of Japanese mangas all the time it’s not as if there are that many original thinkers in the K-Drama industry or Hollywood either for that matter. So why are you so grumpy?!?!

      • 13 demi July 1, 2009 at 6:49 am

@malware, agree. What annoys me is how kdrama lovers think so highly of their dramas and diss others when theirs are equally copied or remade but they seem to be ignorant enough to think theirs are soo original when they are all predictable from the first episode.

  9. 15 angel_deveeeel June 30, 2009 at 9:39 pm

god…i pray to the Higher Power that may the Philippines DO NOT ever touch “Boys Over Flowers”. Am a big “Hana Yori/Boys Over Flowers/Meteor Garden” fan and for the Philippines to do a local version is sacrilegeous!

Am a filipino, but i highly doubt if we can pull off a show like BOF/HYD…

    God Forbid!

  10. 16 unknown June 30, 2009 at 9:58 pm

it seems like ur really against taiwanese dramas?
korea’s BOF is also a remake
    plus, taiwaneses dramas ROCK!

  11. 17 aj June 30, 2009 at 10:03 pm

rain appearing a man,but really GAY in Fullhouse w/ his red panties or jackies (sometimes coming out) or no jackies at all! RAIN IS GAY!
hope actors in remake will not pretend to be a man when they are in reality a jackie!

  12. 18 romele June 30, 2009 at 10:33 pm

agree, even though im also a filipino im also begging ABS not to touch BOF.we dont have the budget to do a remake such as huge as BOF.
ill guess,if this continue every blog, forum etc.is asia will just say EEEWWWWWW!!!

  13. 19 jiyuu June 30, 2009 at 10:39 pm

    off topic:

regarding the philippine remakes of asian dramas, i do believe these dramas we see on tv have some sort of distinction in them. yes, it was conceived from foreign minds but they’ve added a diffent attack…they’ve changed little things so it could appeal more to filipino viewers.

about the the “killing”, “tragedy” and the “no originality”… let’s just put it this way, i guess people have different tastes. some people, filipinos in particular, like suspense and drama. Not everyone appreciates the cutie cutie fairytale series. whatever tastes people have, i guess we should just leave it that way and try to respect.

not good looking? what exactly is good looking? metro sexual teen agers who look like cartoon characters? the demi gods who dictate what the worlds should look and act like? please! no offense meant…just speaking my mind here. peace!:)

  14. 20 yuli June 30, 2009 at 10:53 pm

guys, there’s also a remake here in Philippines. oh well

  15. 21 jicks June 30, 2009 at 10:58 pm

i find it extremely difficult to believe that zhou xun would voluntarily sign up for this, unless serious $$$ are involved of course. rom-coms don’t really seem to be her thang… but then again, maybe she just wants the change/challenge.

not sure if i think wu zun can match bi’s charm but at the v. least he will make excellent eye candy.

taiwanese dramas are fine, remake or not. they’re most definitely not the only people who like to base their dramas on mangas, books, internet novels, & the what not!

  16. 23 Maica June 30, 2009 at 11:15 pm

This is a bit OT but I want to know what would happen to the news of KBS last year about Full House 2? They said it would be on August 2009. But what happened?

  17. 24 Dukie June 30, 2009 at 11:44 pm

like Korean dramas are any more original? why you gotta be hating on the Taiwanese?

  18. 25 Dukie June 30, 2009 at 11:45 pm

oh, and I’m Taiwanese by the way…

  19. 26 suga July 1, 2009 at 12:15 am

wu zun the robot can’t act and the girl is rather old
but then again idol dramas just need a pretty face

    • 27 tibbs July 1, 2009 at 11:41 am

Well their age difference is only 3 years and Zhou Xun looks young for her age. And I agree with you that Wu Zun can’t act… well if you spoke chinese like me you’d realize that his mandarin is horrible, can’t understand half of what he’s saying.

  20. 28 brokkie July 1, 2009 at 12:37 am

it will also have a remake on the Philippines.. GOD..

  21. 29 ph@n July 1, 2009 at 12:42 am

  23. 31 fat kimbab July 1, 2009 at 12:54 am

Vietnamese version of Full house is under works too ( cnt wait for dat, seen pics looks good) seems like everyoneone is doin it. and Smiling Pasta was so crap and the acting was so bad in my opinion. how was that a remake of Full house i dnt understand.

  24. 32 kim July 1, 2009 at 1:09 am

lol the vietnamese are trying to remake it too

    i seriously think it’s gonna fail…even if i’m a viet myself xP

  25. 33 JO July 1, 2009 at 1:51 am

I noticed that most Taiwanese dramas are very cutsey and…overly “cotton candied” all sweet with the ditzy, clumzy girl and the coo and hot guy. Its so cliched. Of course there are many korean dramas like that, but equally the same, they also have dramas with great writing, directing, and actors who know how to act. Alot of people argue that there arent, but thats because they watch trash like BOF. (That was horrendous)
READ DRAMABEANS.COM, she knows the quality dramas out there and stop watching the cute trash that is a shame to all actos, writers, and directors in the worlllddd

  26. 34 minkhuncouple July 1, 2009 at 2:33 am

I hate how GMA and ABS-CBN make Filipinio versions of Korean dramas. Isn’t it enough already that they show the dramas dubbed in Tagalog? Also, they make it very long. They’re so over the top. I’m not against Filippino shows. I am a Filipino too! It’s just that they should shorten their shows a little bit and make them a little possible. They should also stop making new versions of old movies or dramas whether they’re Filipino, KOrean, Taiwanese, or whatever.

  27. 35 mee July 1, 2009 at 3:14 am

    wawwww… AGAIN .. BLABLABLA

  28. 36 kojyojtuskhibheev. July 1, 2009 at 3:39 am

If you don’t want to watch it, then don’t.

No one is asking you to watch the remakes.

  29. 37 xawesomexmex July 1, 2009 at 7:09 am

    YAY

  30. 38 hyunnie July 1, 2009 at 7:56 am

  31. 39 IlIkEcHIneSe July 1, 2009 at 7:58 am

    Taiwan 화이팅 ^__^.

  32. 40 miriam July 1, 2009 at 9:32 am

I’m not even from the Philippines but I’m really sick of all the people going “ewww” with the Philippine version what’s wrong with them doing a remake? I happen to think there are heaps of good looking Filipino actors/actresses, some who I think look heaps better than Korean ones. What shocks me isn’t the Koreans who are dissing the Philippine dramas, but the Filipinos themselves. Have you no self pride that you must go around worshipping Kdramas and Koreas in general?

As for Taiwan dramas, they have the cutsey stuff sure- if your watching something that is idol orientated because it’s not meant to be taken seriously- it’s just for kids. Equally they have good dramas minus the cartoon things but I suppose people here don’t watch them since they’re to affiliated with idol dramas and “Looks” anyway.

  33. 42 weeOoHh July 1, 2009 at 10:27 am

I’m Filipino, and even though I think it’s pretty odd how many remakes they’re making.. They’re not that bad.

I happen to actually like some of the remakes. Although they aren’t exact to the original, they’re pretty good. Like ‘My Girl’, it wasn’t exact.. but it was a really good remake. If you don’t like the remakes.. don’t watch simple as that. And to those saying that dramas in the Philipines are no longer original, only remakes.. Check out Tayong Dalawa or The Wedding.

  34. 43 tokugawa-chan July 1, 2009 at 10:29 am

Sorry can’t watch drama from taiwan or china. Can’t stop laughing at their language. They sound too harsh and funny. No matter how cute the guys and girls are. I just stick to korean or Japanese.

  35. 46 krooxy July 1, 2009 at 11:07 am

derr.. smiling pasta was a remake of full house? really? i didn’t know that.. I mean I guess…

and it’s not like taiwan is the only one notorious for producing dramas off of comics. Japan does that all the time too.

    • 47 tibbs July 1, 2009 at 11:31 am

yeah, actually when it comes to comics remade into live action…the Japanese take the cake.

      • 48 Minnie July 1, 2009 at 6:56 pm

umm.. but they were the ones producing the manga..
so the creativity still comes from them anyw..

wat’s wrong with remaking? Korean and Japan should be proud that the world Asia can enjoy their plot..
boys over flowers is so hot now.. do you tink the original manga writer would sue the directors who adapt from him/her?

      • 49 med July 2, 2009 at 6:37 am

But the comics were made by the Japanese themselves. It’s pretty common for one country to make live action adpatations of their own written work i.e. The Xmen was a comic, the Twilight series were novels, even Legally Blonde was a book before!

        Sheesh.

  36. 50 Tely July 1, 2009 at 11:55 am

I am one of the Anti of remaking films from neighboring country, so please stop doing it in the Philippines. I dont like the way it was done. Thank you.

  37. 52 Dukie July 1, 2009 at 12:03 pm

I can’t stand it when people are like, “i don’t like China this or Taiwan that or Philippines this” That’s see more Asian pride

  38. 57 RamuneLove July 1, 2009 at 12:04 pm

Man… I wish Asia would just be more creative XD

  39. 58 Axuri July 1, 2009 at 1:55 pm

umm… I’m not Taiwanese, but this article stung me. It seems to be a bit harsh. “Taiwan is notorious for being uncreative…”? That’s not nice.

  40. 60 felisshi July 1, 2009 at 2:06 pm

There’s nothing better than the orig.

  41. 61 jackie12 July 1, 2009 at 6:06 pm

the female lead role of the FULL HOUSE remake in the Philippines will be Rhian Ramos, they said that richard gutierrez personally chose her

  42. 62 Minnie July 1, 2009 at 6:52 pm

y did zhou xun downgrade herself to idol dramas?
and she really izit the idol type though..
omg.. so not looking forward to it.

  43. 63 applecone July 1, 2009 at 7:36 pm

    remakes…..
is there a full house 2????

  44. 64 charmaine July 1, 2009 at 9:20 pm

.. “there’s nothing better than the original”
    hmp i think that’s true .. hehe
    original is the best ..
but i thought it so nice too ..

  45. 65 sandy July 1, 2009 at 9:25 pm

i saw a picture recently in the internet wherein erich gonzales will be the jang di in the filipino version of boys over flowers. jun pyo will be played by a japanese actor and ji hoo by victor basa….? have you seen this guys? i think erich fits the character., i mean who else can portray it here?

but err…. the bottomline is…. it’s too unoriginal! there’s so many novels, short stories, etc. by various filipino writers that are worthy enough to be aired in tv.

  46. 66 Jyuya July 1, 2009 at 10:09 pm

“Taiwan is notorious for being uncreative” … false and unnecessary … -______-

  47. 67 Susan C. July 2, 2009 at 12:56 am

    My reaction: WHAT?! WHAT?! WHAT?!
YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING.
    Oh dear…
Seriously, of all the Taiwanese stars out there, they pick Wu Zun?! That guy can’t act for *beep*… >.>
Hasn’t anyone noticed that almost all the popular Taiwanese dramas are based off Japanese manga/anime like Meteor Garden, It Started With A Kiss, Peach Girl, and Marmalade Boy?! Oh dear… And then if not something Japanese, they adapt something Korean… And then if not Korean, the story lines, they make it so corny!
    What’s next? Goong?! OMFG. D:<

  48. 68 hellodeedee July 2, 2009 at 3:05 am

Jyuya – “Taiwan is notorious for being uncreative” … false and unnecessary … -______-

I agree. I love popseoul, but this comment is totally unnecessary. Isn’t this site about korean celebrities? Why make racist remarks? I hope I’ll carry on reading popseoul updates without bs comments like these.

  49. 70 koreagossip July 2, 2009 at 7:17 am

Eh…remakes are never better than the original, in my opinion. But interesting!

  50. 71 rodel Almonte lovehyekyo July 2, 2009 at 6:19 pm

    oh really !!!!!!!!!!!
also here in philippines b’coz of its popularity…we love song hye kyo… specially gma-7 network.. they buy the rights to remake the full house and also the WORLDS WITHIN will be air hir maybe last part of 2009…I think Richard Gutierrez will portray the character of Rain but I wish that Marian Rivera will play the Song Hye Kyo version… And I can’t wait to see the season 2 of FULL HOUSE……….I wish the character will be the same as season 1.

I wish that SONG HYE KYO will visit Philippines ….. Soon…
