For a while now, one of the most bold and characteristic fashion hairstyles has been the mushroom cut.
Just like the fungus, the mushroom hairstyle has many different variations. They range anywhere from short and round (like a straw mushroom) to long and flowing (like a shiitake mushroom). Poofy, close-cropped, wavy, straight, you name it. It can look absolutely cute and cheek-pinchingly adorable; yet cut or worn wrongly, it can really look cheap and ruin the day and eye-sight of anyone who sees it (I saw one such monstrosity at Lotte World one time, it still gives me nightmares). It has made appearances on the streets of Korea worn by everyday people, to the small and big screen where it is subsequently shown-off on the domes of various celebrities.
Most recently it has made an appearance with cute actress Han Hyo-joo (top right) of Spring Waltz and Iljimae fame. She is back again in a new drama called “Shining Inheritance” featuring K-ballad crooner Lee Seung-ki. In this drama, Han Hyo-joo sports the famous, or rather infamous mushroom hair-style that is and has been the rage in Korea for quite some time. It seems like she took “mushroom” quite literally as her hair could be confused with a large toadstool if seen far away.
The mushroom hairstyle has been displayed on the heads of other famous K-celebs as well namely Suh In-young, (bottom left) Jessica (Girls Generation) (bottom right) Kang Min-kyung (the taller part of the singer duo Davichi – middle left), Tae Min (of SHINee- middle right), Micky Yoo-Chun (of Dong-bang-shin-ki – top, middle) MC Mong (insert monkey joke/comment here- bottom midde) and more recently beautiful actresses Song Hye-kyo (middle) and Ku Hye-sun (top left)in the dramas “The World That They Live In” and “Boys Before Flowers.” Popular even several years ago, it seems that the mushroom cap hair style refuses to die and continues to spore and grow on the heads of Korea’s youth and celebrities.
So, what are your thoughts on this style? First hand knowledge from mushroom-hair wearers and aficionados is most welcome.

As I hogged 1st comment, I might as well add I love mushrooms – fried, dried, boiled, baked, in soup, on pizza, in desserts etc. But not as a hairstyle in adulthood. Mushroom wigs are approved if they are all for fun and hairdo innovation but as a cut, total no-no. For kiddies though, it’s a go. I <3 the mushroom-headed children. I used to have the excat same style as Ku Hye-Sun in grade school.
kang min kyung, suh in young and gu hye sun all look sooooo cute in their mushroom styles. taemin…not so much. neither yoochun. i think it looks better with girls.

Don’t wear a mushroom cut unless your face is long, mushroom cuts on short faces makes them look even shorter. Actually, the mushroom cut looks cute on Taemin because he has such a nice long symmetrical face.

This is not a style for everybody for sure. I tried to have full bangs in front but it’s an epic fail..my face structure just doesn’t work. But I would LOVE to have bangs..

actually i have the same hairstyle as goo hye sun,, and i loveee it,, i think it suits me well… hmm, but, as what this article had said, you better think atleast 10 times before you decide to cut your hair like this, coz it might really ruin your look, and the worse part is you have to wait for several months for your hair to grow again… but oh well,, its about how you carry yourself and your style, it’s about self-confidence, if you think you’re rocking the hairstyle then people will look at you as if you really are rocking it, so just be yourself!

At first i hated the mushroom head thing…and i still kind of do, but some people like suh-inyoung can pull it off pretty well. But yea, should not be a guy thing!
It looks good on some people, but it looks bad on some. Easy as that.
Where I am from, these are usually known as bowl cuts. (E.G. Put a bowl around your head and cut anything longer than the rim of the bowl.)

I think it looks ok on Kang Min-kyung and Minzy from 2NE1. Of course, I’d never get it because I’d look terrible. Speaking of terrible, this is not a haircut guys should get.
