Girls Generation’s “Genie” was plagiarized

snsd_hannah_20090702

Not by SM Entertainment, but by an Uzbekistan singer by the name of Dineyra.

News claiming that SM plagiarized “Genie” began to spread online due to Dineyra’s track, “Raqsga tushgin,” having been released a few months earlier than “Genie.” Father SM, furious, since he actually bought the rights to the song from Universal Music, has stated that he will take full legal actions for plagiarism of the song. A representative of Universal Music denied giving the Uzbekistan singer any rights to the song, stating,

We not only don’t know of this Uzbekistan singer, Dineyra, we also never permitted for her to use the song. Dineyra’s version of the song was clearly released without our legal consent.

The original melody for “Genie” was composed by European composers, Dsign Music. However, SM composer, Yoo Young-jin, created an additional melody, rearranged and also wrote the lyrics himself to make the song his own. So, from the looks of it, the track was somehow leaked during the process of the composer sending Universal Music the song. This already makes it the fourth adverse incident the girls have run into after releasing comeback and hopefully it will be the last.

Here’s a clip of Dineyra’s “Raqsga tushgin” and Girls Generation’s “Genie,” so you guys can compare the two for yourselves.

If you dont like them, just leave them alone.
And dont be a fag by being oh im an anti.

  2. 4 Choonhee July 6, 2009 at 9:00 am

    WOW it’s EXACTLY the same!
Well, even if it is the same song SNSD definitely sang and presented it better than the unknown group.

    Plus they’re much prettier

  3. 5 ax04 July 6, 2009 at 9:23 am

    I have NO words. :X

  4. 6 bigbang~~~ July 6, 2009 at 9:25 am

    holy cow
    its almost exactly the same!

  5. 7 JJ July 6, 2009 at 9:41 am

Whaa… SNSD’s version is 93432749 times better… plus they have the dancing and their singing style suits the beat better.

  6. 9 CandyGirl89 July 6, 2009 at 9:47 am

    old news

  7. 10 ok July 6, 2009 at 9:58 am

    okay… it is very similar….

  8. 11 vicki July 6, 2009 at 10:05 am

exactly the same, but snsd is so much better!
no one really gives about the other one……

  9. 12 Deajay July 6, 2009 at 10:34 am

Dineyra looks like a Kim Kardashian wannabe. She shouldn’t have been allowed to use that song. Plus SNSD’s version is way better than her version. The performance everything was better than Dineyra’s.

  10. 14 stph July 6, 2009 at 11:18 am

    woah so similar
    but i like snsd’s ver better…no offense to dineyra….

  11. 15 MajesticSnow July 6, 2009 at 11:29 am

    whoa. exactly the same tune.
idk, i personally like snsd’s better cuz it sounds nicer. the other one isn’t all THAT bad because the song itself is pretty cool.

  12. 16 BiBi July 6, 2009 at 12:30 pm

are you sure it’s not a translation? where the composer is still the same person and the lyrics are just by different ppl?

  13. 17 stefanie July 6, 2009 at 1:50 pm

whatever girls generation is better anyway.. it’s not gonna make me stop liking genie..

    • 18 angelas July 8, 2009 at 10:13 am

:/ so are you saying you dont care about originality? idk, there’s a reason why i dont consider SNSD/most korean pop groups “artists.” artists make their own music.

      • 19 ilovesnsdtiffany July 9, 2009 at 10:16 am

shut the hell up angela. SNSD are a great pretty group of girls. You’re just jealous that you’re ugly and SNSD is wayy prettier than you. If you could read, obviously you cant, SM bought the rights to the song so they legally publish it and etc. That ugly uzbekiztan girl copied the song illegally and without legal contents.

  14. 20 copyboyss July 6, 2009 at 2:20 pm

Popseoul, why do you copy articles from other sites..

  15. 21 . July 6, 2009 at 2:46 pm

    VERY VERY OLD NEWS

  16. 22 Ali July 6, 2009 at 4:12 pm

  17. 24 `KyLaa<3 July 6, 2009 at 5:50 pm

    o-o’
    i like SNSD’s version better

  18. 25 bellos July 6, 2009 at 7:08 pm

dineyra ver is like woman.. while snsd is girls..like them both..

  19. 26 lol July 6, 2009 at 7:39 pm

    wow!!!

no doubt! snsd’s verison is waaaaaaaay better than that freak one!!!

  20. 27 andrea July 6, 2009 at 7:58 pm

that singers face is ugly! it doesnt match with the song so who cares!!

  21. 29 gazetna July 6, 2009 at 9:11 pm

Popseoul, why do you copy articles from other sites..

  22. 30 SHINee Luv XD July 6, 2009 at 10:02 pm

I hate to say it, but SNSD sung it WAY~~ better… Even though I don’t like them, I have to take their side this time. The songs are the same and…yeah…

  23. 31 DBSJSHINee July 6, 2009 at 11:44 pm

You know, I find it funny that those die-hard fans of SNSD are so bent on saying that SNSD’s version is better when BOTH versions SOUNDS exactly the same.
I bet that at least 50% of the people reading the article are not Koreans, and if Dineyra’s audiotrack was playing instead of Genie, you guys won’t even know the difference because of the language.
And there are people that are saying that Dineyra’s version sucks because she’s singing in some unknowned language.
Hey, get this straight, most SNSD fans don’t understand Korean either. And since (I might as well say it again) that both version sounds exactly the same, whats there to compare? Its just that SNSD probably has a bigger fan base that the other singer.

Hey, give that girl a break. Its not like she knew her company supposedly “stole” the song from Universal Music.
She’s just the face and the money maker from the company.
I’m not a fan of her. Infact, I’m actually and (half) SNSD fan, but I still think we shouldn’t bring her down like that.

  24. 35 me July 6, 2009 at 11:56 pm

well, really, whats wrong with people comparing which song is better?? OF COURSE people will compare which song is better especially when it almost the same? its not with the snsd-die-hard-fan’s problem, but snsd-die-hard antis problem. get it? god, now i’m really on snsd’s fan side since i found their antis are annoying.

    • 36 DBSJSHINee July 7, 2009 at 12:02 am

Actually, you’re wrong again. Its the die-hard fan’s problem
I’m a fan, but not a die-hard fan. The die-hard fans are just accusing Dineyra of stealing the song.
If she did get her hands on the demo tape, it must be the work of the people in Universal Music. One person must have actually sold Dineyra the song or actually gave it to her otherwise how can the song leak?
Its not like she can just walk into the company and steal the song in broad daylight.

And the anti’s don’t even care about the plagiarism.
I’m just stating the obvious and entirely, you have fully backed my statement as one of those die-hard fans of SNSD that can’t accept reality.

  25. 38 ly July 7, 2009 at 12:41 am

surprisingly, i prefer Dineyra than snsd’s vrsn.

  26. 40 stitch July 7, 2009 at 12:51 am

gosh though the song is exactly the same, dinerya or wadever freaks me out with her (sorry to say) face and her dancing. the mv also seemed dull compared to snsd so it’s pretty obvious who’s the winner here.

  27. 41 S T A R R * July 7, 2009 at 12:58 am

    wahahahaha. whut the heck?!
    PLAGIARISM is a crime!!!!!!!!!
why don’t they create their own style and melody?
    duhhh.
    IT SUCKS!
and i hate it because i really love this girls!
    SARANGHAEYO NOONA!
    :)

  28. 42 kookoo July 7, 2009 at 2:25 am

Woah..didn’t see this one coming…it’s almost the SAME…except for SNSD sings it in a higher pitch….

    I like both versions.

  29. 43 bear July 7, 2009 at 3:00 am

I’m not going to lie, that Uzbekistan lady scares me.

  30. 44 jess July 7, 2009 at 3:28 am

    sounds nearly the same…

  31. 45 jh155 July 7, 2009 at 5:56 am

SNSD ARE TALENTLESS– before performing meaningless songs that only 5year olds enjoy, maybe work on your cellulite that you like to flaunt off so much?

    Taeyeon can singgg nonetheless

  32. 47 dodo July 7, 2009 at 6:50 am

ubekizstan is lower pitched. sounds better higher pitched. i sort of dig the SNSD version better…

  33. 48 Unwise Sage July 7, 2009 at 7:01 am

I sort of feel people are being closed-minded about Uzbekistan [entertainment] culture. WHat does Dineyra’s looks have to do with the outcome of the song? Maybe that’s one version of ideal mainstream beauty in Uzbekistan. And maybe I’m analyzing too deep, but maybe Dineyra wasn’t as fortunate to have the budget as SNSD..or maybe that’s the kind of vids they like over there. And who knows if Dineyra is super famous in her respective country. Don’t you get upset when those who aren’t into KPOP talk smack about your beloved artists because they aren’t familiar with the music and culture? Anyway..SNSD’s MV is just too cutesy for me. Maybe I’m fed up with the Asian girl stereotype so that’s why I prefer Dineyra’s MV. But in terms of sounds, yeah…sounds waay too similar except for vocal range as someone mentioned above. Well, I guess the main issue is that someone stole from someone else without giving proper creative credit.

    • 49 angelas July 8, 2009 at 10:15 am

you are so right. high five. but no, i just get upset when people like groups that have no talent. everyone just copies, it’s ridiculous… koreans tend to just copy and “perfect” things. it’s upsetting esp. since im korean ):

  34. 50 bea July 7, 2009 at 7:44 am

for some reason i like the words better from the uzbetskin one but snsd is much prettier

  35. 51 YGfmailylovaaa July 7, 2009 at 8:28 am

    omg its the same!!!

  36. 52 ez July 7, 2009 at 11:31 am

WOAH. It’s weird hearing the same beat in two different languages – Korean and Uzbekistan. D:

  37. 53 rellalove July 7, 2009 at 11:33 am

It doesn’t matter they’re two different languages. I like Dineyra’s MV better but since everyone else here is biased, I’ll be the same. SNSD rocks

  38. 54 youbun7 July 7, 2009 at 11:39 am

Totally different market I don’t think the Uzbekistan will purchase the SNSD album nor the korean will buy that european CD

but whoever plagiarized need to pay back the fees that’s for sure

  39. 55 ilovedonghae July 7, 2009 at 3:08 pm

okay… so this is kinda weird… lol… the big music thing didn’t comfirm Dineyra for that song?
lol… personally, i like the snsd one better… not the mv… but the song…
why doesnt the Dineyra one have subs?
i want to know what she is saying to see if it is the same… ANYWAY… i’m gonna google that

  40. 56 maimai1987 July 7, 2009 at 4:13 pm

This times, i’m trying to get over my jealousy over snsd. LOL!!!

yeah, i definitely like snsd’s version better.

  41. 57 ShadowLady86 July 7, 2009 at 5:24 pm

looks like a big whoops on SNSD’s part. lol.

  42. 58 Hannah July 7, 2009 at 10:25 pm

Why are you people being so mean on Dineyra. Maybe it’s because I’m Korean American, but I got fascinated by her language after listening to her song. Her voice sounds really pretty too. I like both versions, but I kind of prefer Dineyra’s over SNSD’s. No offense. I love SNSD.
By the way, I believe that “Uzbek” is the right word to describe a person from Uzbekistan. Uzbekistan is the name for the country. Correct me if I’m wrong.

  43. 59 Yan July 7, 2009 at 11:12 pm

i think most of ppl think snsd ver is better cos they remix it..Me too think that snsd ver is better bcos of they’ve remixed it..
However, from the basic tone(rhythm) it sound exactly same..
Somehow i think the vid of Dineyra’s “Raqsga tushgin” style is a bit old, looks like a vid from early 2000..

  44. 60 superevilasianfattys July 8, 2009 at 3:21 am

What’s up with everyone copying songs? I mean, it’s ok once in awhile, but sheesh…

  45. 61 erikalovessnsd July 8, 2009 at 4:27 am

stupid dinerya or wtf she spelled her name im so annoyed that she’s copying snsd. but who cares she stink anyways.

  46. 62 lalala July 8, 2009 at 7:28 am

wow… just maybe they hacked into sm entertainment for this and took it. lol thats not even a possibility.

snsd is much better. snsd is known in lots of places

  47. 63 solene July 8, 2009 at 9:02 am

    Its totally the same!!

  48. 64 music July 8, 2009 at 9:55 am

Wow it’s so similar that it’s ridiculous.
Thank gawd she didn’t copy the dance along with it.

  49. 65 Lamb83 July 8, 2009 at 6:15 pm

Who copied what? Who did it first?
