T-ara can’t settle on a concept

tara1_20090706

If there’s nothing original anymore, I guess the next best thing is to just conquer them all in one go.

With their impending debut, Mnet’s new hope, T-ara, have been releasing teaser photos illustrating them experimenting with all different types of concepts. The first approach was the blonde afro clone look, following that, they released a second photo of the girls looking slightly more distinguishable with a white fresh image. I got to say all their eyes look frighteningly big and perfect in this photo.

tara_20090705Now the T-ara girls are continuing on with a 1920s sort of privileged youth, sequins and stocking look with their latest teaser photos, which have a fierce editorial touch. While their group and compilation shots look quite nice, all the individual photos make me slightly queasy because of their overly whitened and plastic faces.

I have to admit that I kinda have high hopes for T-ara, being advertised as a pretty girl group with vocals to beat, but it feels that they are trying too hard in the image department. Their new individual photos recall the faces of preexisting popular girl group members, as if somehow replicating their look will somehow emulate their success.

Bo-ram looks like KARA’s bubbly American member, Nicole.

From the very beginning, people have noticed that Hyo-min bares a startling resemblance to Girls Generation’s raspy voiced American member, Jessica.

New addition Kiwi (Q-ri) reminds me of a more fierce-looking Sun-mi from the Wondergirls.

Whenever I think of T-ara now, I don’t think, “Oh yeah, powerful vocalists that are pretty.” What I think now is, “Trying too hard to be ‘unique’ by fitting into the mold. I can smell their desperation to succeed.” The girls have to show me more than just pretty pictures; give me some teasers showcasing your vocal talents!

I’m too tired of looking at their faces to think of other comparisons, but here are So-yeon, Eun-jung, and Ji-yeon’s individual photos for you to contemplate that thought if you really want to waste your brain power on that.

i hope they stick with the ballads!

I agree. I mean, catchy pop songs are great and they get stuck in your head and everything, but just once I would like a female ballad/acapella group that can blow me away, like TVXQ’s Japanese ballad songs level =O

They look great, just goes to show their versatility in pulling of different concepts with ease. These girls will own the stage in august, just wait.

whats with the hate? its hard fo anybody to be original, they have done a great jobs setting themselves apart.

    • 11 SomeGuy July 7, 2009 at 9:39 pm

Well, it’s the unfortunate hate of fans of other girlgroups who feel threatened by the hotness+talent of T-ara. Haters will hate no matter what concept they come up with. If it’s cute, they’ll say cute is done with, they need to be edgy. If they’re sexy-fierce, they’ll say they’re copying After School(who rock, btw) or 2ne1(who don’t). There’s no pleasing them.

when i read the headline, it was like dejavu… i’ve read a similar headline before… somewhere along the line that: “2ne1’s confused about their style.” correct me if i’m wrong… but recycling much? lmao.

well, good luck to T-ara! they’re something different i guess.
