What? Why doesn’t he help out his own countrymen? Are we missing the boat here?
The school in Sri Lanka, which Bae Yong-joon donated 100 million KRW in order to restore, has been completed.
The hallyu star donated a total of 300 million KRW, to help fund the restoration of earthquake and tsunami damaged cities in Sri Lanka and other Indian Ocean coastal areas. Of the 300 million KRW, 200 million KRW was dedicated to aid the victims of the earthquake by providing food, relief aid supplies, temporary shelter and temporary playground for the children, for a span of 6 months. The remaining 100 million KRW was used to fund the restoration of the middle school in Sri Lanka, damaged by the tsunami.
According to World Vision, Bae Yong-joon’s donations helped resolve the restroom problem of the middle school in Weligama, Sri Lanka, building one boys restroom and two girls restrooms for the students. In addition, for the shortage of classrooms, an additional 10 classrooms were built, with four out of the ten classrooms being used to teach special subjects such as dance, music, English and home economics. The hallyu star also provided backpacks, school uniforms and school supplies for the entire 563 students enrolled in the school.
When Bae Yong-joon was asked how he felt about having a school built in Sri Lanka, in his name, the actor stated:
I wanted to return all the love I received from those in Asia by giving back to many more people, which is why I decided make a donation to take part in the World Vision project. I’m proud but even more grateful that the project turned out so well and to see the little children so happy.
Aren’t his fans all ajummas in Japan?
This isn’t the first time the actor has donated to a charity program to help those in need.

firsty!
Good for him. Who cares who he helps, the point is he is putting his money towards some good in the world.
why does it matter which country he helps out?
im pretty sure south korea doesnt need the money as much as sri lanka.
south korea is one of the richer countries in asia.
sri lanka is 3rd world.
you do the math.
i hate it when ppl complain about sh*t like that, as long as ppl who are in need is receiving help, i dont care what country gets the aid as long as these ppl get help.
@ author of this post:
stop being so damn selfish!
i agreee
im just thankful he’s helping and donating to someone atleast
a life is a life
Yeah.. pretty stupid comment. It doesn’t matter if he helped orphans in Korea or disaster victims in Sri Lanka. The point is he’s doing a lot to help.
I agree with juliagulia007. The most important thing is that he’s helping make a positive difference. Since he has so many fans, I hope this will be a good example for all of them and encourage them to donate to charitable caused as well.
Such a big heart. Seoul Pop, Sri lanka is such a poor country. Correct me if I’m wrong, but my driving instructor told me that one American dollar is equal to 150 dollars. If they don’t need donations, I’m not sure who else does.
Popseoul, this is why no one goes on your frickin blog anymore.
Why can’t you just give Bae Yong Joon credit for his generous and thoughtful deed?
I agree with jelly .. just give the man some credit!
umm, ok, i see a lot of hostility towards this post…i mean, i understand this view point though. i mean, in these economic times, i think it would help more if bae yong joon did contribute to his country. there are many starving children in korea too, and in japan, and in china, and thailand, ETC. he said he “received a lot of love from asia”, then why not give back to asia?
i don’t mean to sound selfish, but it’s just my opinion. i’m still very happy that he gave to sri lanka, because they are in need of help, but it would’ve also helped if he gave back to asia also.
Sri Lanka IS in Asia. Sheesh brush up on your geography.
Anyway, I agree that it is a tough time (and yes there are starving children in Korea, too – but not at the same magnitude as it is in Sri Lanka); however, even in good economic times nobody cares about Sri Lanka. I applaud BYJ for caring about these forgotten children. The man deserves some credit.
This is a problem in our society today – everybody just cares about him/herself (or in this case country). What is so wrong about extending a hand to another nation? We are all human. Borders are merely arbitrary.
I’m sure that he does give aid to his homeland but he choose to build a school in a county where it is needed more. There are poor people everywhere but Korea is not a poor country; it is one of the wealthies countries in Asia. Sri Lanks is a very poor county with poor education.
Hahahaha….lol…Sri Lanka is in Asia!!! Which standard are you in?!!! LOLzzzzzz…….
lol…it’s his money.
let the man do what he wants w/ it.
popseoul is lame…amateur writers…
cant u come up w/ a better way to draw attention?
not really good w/ words r u?
this dude is ooollldd
and soo will you!!! better brush up on doing good deeds then..instead of talking crap about someone doing good!! BOBO!!
Bravo Mr. Bae…God Bless You…
He has more donations in Korea than in other
countries combined. He has been donating since
his debut.
It is a shame that you are Korean.
You are not doing any research as usual
but what can we expect from this s..blog.
You want me to give you the breakdown of
his donations or you will just try to
do your own research?
maybe you should consider re-writing this post cause the way you talk about things lead to misunderstandings. i completely agree, recently it’s been pretty tough in Korea as well. there will always be trouble.
but you have to admit that korea is more developed than sri lanka. and i mean you correctly mentioned the tsunami and earthquake victims. why not help those whose existence is on the line? hello? school for children in need? where’s the problem? you know, just because this is a gossip blog doesn’t mean you have to always search for (make up) problems, cause in this case there IS NONE. thumps up for byj though i don’t really like him as an actor he is a very enerous man.
PS: the last comment about the ‘ajumma’ is pretty nasty. he got his money from japanese and korean fans. some of them are ajummas but what does that have to do with giving his love back? simply stupid
he is getting old…
he is kinda losing his twssg hair…
plus he really needs to settle down…
geez…what’s age got to do with doing good?! BOBO!!
Fans act like any actor older than 33 should crawl off and die.
What’s up with that? BTW IT’S HIS $$$$…….
I remember he is the first one to donate
during the oil spill incident in Korea.
Yah, I agree to what o.O wrote.
You should rewrite this entry.
This entry sounded like you are blaming
someone who has done something good for
the benefit of the less fortunate.
Although I can sense that you are not
gifted with excellent common sense,
I can see any meaning in what you wrote
questioning about a good dead been done.
What one earth do you mean by questioning
where and to whom he should donate?
I salute you BAE YONG JOON! I love you more! You have such a big heart.
May God continue to bless individuals like you. Your help with the sri lankans during this time of crisis will never be forgotten. as the world is watching this beautiful story unfold has become an inspiration to the many, a model to all and a realization to this world that after all love still exist. To those deprived and forgotten be optimistic. This world can change and still improve because we have such people like BAE YONG JOON who cares!!!!
Way to go!!!
I think Popseoul is the one “missing the boat”! What does it matter what country he helps. Sri Lanka is a poor country that still hasn’t recovered since the
tsunami a few years ago. He’s doing an awesome thing!
I’ts comments like your’s Popseoul that continue to instigate the mindset that Koreans are racist and selfish.
Maybe more people throughout the world should be like Bae Yong-joon.
Gosh, he really is getting old.
He looks like the older version of Hyun Joong, lol.
Good on him though.
i think bae yong joon is doing the right thing so way to go bae yong joon!!!(i am not a fan of him)
l is right he looks lke kim hyung joon but older i bet kim hyung joon will look a little like him
way to go…mr. bae yong joon….i agree with most of the above comments…s.korea is one of the richest countries in asia…and yes, it’s his money…so, let him be…giving a school to a country also brings honor and glory to the donor’s country…so why is it bad?…
I noticed that Popseoul never writes good things about BYJ. He just didi what he believes.
Please don’t forget that because of his drama (Winter Sonata) Japanese began to fall in love with Korean dramas. Korea even made a lot of foreign income from that drama in 2003-2004 by selling its accessories, attracting tourists to visit its drama sites, etc. And Korea used WS as a first drama to introduce their dramas to other countries including Middle East and South America.
I am glad he mentioned “he received much love from Asia”.
Cheers!!
exactly…PS dosen’t write good stuff about BYJ..but talks about him anywayzz…yeah..he must be such an important person for PS!!!
BYJ has been donating and helping fellow south koreans since he started in the business…what’s the point?? are u running out of bad stuff to say about him?? huh? PS?? . You use to compare him to the late MJ, are u happy now?? have u done anything good for your country lately..huh..PS?? donate yourself…it would help!!
i like him more now. way to go!now go make more drama so i can support your cause.
i don’t know if popseoul is purposely trying to get an angry reaction from readers or if the writers are just have no common sense or heart, but this article is just ridiculous. You are actually ridiculing someone for donating money to help out extremely poor people?? wooowww good job, don’t want to know how bad your karma is O_o
PS has no definition of what KARMA is, hana…he wants it soo bad!!
i agree that it does’nt matter what country he’s helping.
he’s helping the children in need for god’s sake.
anw,im glad he has such a kind heart towards helping people all over the world.
That was sweet!
Mr. Bae’s donation helped people who probably would be waiting years to get some level of infrastructure back.
Now, given the recent turmoil that was in Sri Lanka, did this school (according to the plaque, it was opened in 2007) get affected by the battles in Sri Lanka or not?
looks and appearance doesnt matter as long as a person has a big heart…..and for his age he is still soooo handsome… he’s so good…the best as always!!!
Lifted this from a famous BYJ blog to answer the question of the writer “are we missing the boat here”?
She/he has been missing a lot.
******************************************************
original in korean: my daily 2005/01/04
BYJ donated 300m won for victims of earthquake-tsunami,
& 200m won for domestic pediatric cancer children
‘Yon-sama is an angel in Asia!’
BYJ donated to the charity and relief organizations total of 500 million won, 300 million won for the victims of the South Asian earthquake-tsunami, and 200 million won for the domestic children with childhood cancers.
******************************************************
Meaning, in 2005 he donated to the tsunami earthquake victims and KOREAN’s sick children.
Thank you, Bae Yong Jun Ssi. You have a heart of gold – helping people in need, restoring their livelihood and giving people Hope, Happiness and a Focus in life. The more you give, the more you will get back in life. May God bless you. Stay Happy and Healthy.
um, i think sri lanka needs more aid for schools than korea when you look at both countries economically…
and at least he’s helping others with his money. the writers of popseoul can learn a few things from him instead of spending 24/7 on kpop gossip.
Good for him. I understand where PopSeoul is coming from, but as stated many times before Sri Lanka needs a lot of aid. Bad.
Ultimately, what’s important is that he’s helping the impoverished. Now he could help the rest of us out by cutting that terrible hair.
Well done BYJ! Love you~~~
I really admire and respect you, Bae Yong-joon sshi. You are so generous. You have a big heart that’s why you are blessed.
On the other hand, you are still sooo handsome and fit for your age.
Keep up the good work! Saranghaeyo!
Wow………I think we should applaud anyone who donates money to the poor. If u guys do not know Sri Lanka is one of the poorest country in the world.
Who cares who he donates the money to its his money.
With regards his hair who cares how he wears it it is his hair………leave him be.
PEACE to all.
Respect the man for helping out those who are in need. i wish US government would have the same attitude for those who are in New Orleans. He led a hand to those who need it doesn’t matter who it is for.
people all over the world need help. In America families are losing homes and children are starving. this issue just isn’t in the states but all over the world. specially in ares like India, Africa and South America. Countries who are rich with naturally resources but only 20% reap the profits and 5% (or less) is the government that controls it.
Its up to communities to support each other.Helping out your fellow man is something we ALL should be doing rich or poor. small donation like volunteering to funding rebuilt of schools all work for the better.Lucky he had the money but is up to the people to rebuilt and create a better community, nation, and world.
take a look at yourself and ask the question “What AM I doing to help my people, my nation.” before you judge another for helping someone who help those who are different.
Even the richest countries in the world have needy people, but at least have a chance to educate themselves and receive aid from provate and goberment agencies. But other countries are in dire situation. Without education, their chances of prospering diminish. How much do the people who criticize him (and other successful people) donate consistently to charities, (and I don’t mean loose change)?
At 36 BYJ is a long way from being old. Of course ahujummas adore him because he is classy and remind them of the gentlemen who are hard to find now.
Negative blogs exist because people read them. Send the message that that’s not good for them. There are other websites who inform about Asian entertainment such as asianfanatics.net
BYJ is busy promoting his country’s culture abroad and doing a lot to bring the Korean culture and language to other countries. He is no slacker and is doing a lot to help his country in many other ways. I wish he would spend a little more time doing dramas since he seems to take on a project every three years. His past dramas have been high rated and has fans all over the world who love him because you can feel his decency, generosity and kindness. GBY BYJ!
well said Eliza…36 is still young. BYJ’s got a good heart..i see his real intentions, it’s not out of being famous..but really wanting to help and make a difference. education is indeed important. kids must have the chance to learn…get it PS?? Go back to school yourself and get re-educated!!!
It doesn’t matter when as he is donating to help. Better than people with millions and not doing anything right?
It is very admirable of him to do that, and there is nothing wrong with with he did. HELP THOSE WHO NEED HELP THE MOST. Korea’s situation is no where as worse as Sri-Lanka- So more power to the guy, and stop hating someone who is doing a very positive thing.
I love love love this guy. He is such a nice and wonderful man. In return for his generosity, I hope he is able to receive all the happiness and love he gives out to other people.
why??,, race doesn’t matter!!! when someone needs help, we must do all we can!!! It’s better to help the needy than making and writing fuss and annoyance like this..ryt??
If I were you,, also help the needy like Bae Yong joon,, than doing or writing stupid comment like this!!!!! Bae Yong Joon is a good example, a role model that I really admire!!!
And one thing more,, his fans are not only Japanese!!! Other Asian countries really really like him!! and one of them is me…!!
Better know everything first, before writing things like this!!! HayyZzz, this is what I hate about other people,, always saying what they want to say, without even thinking,, they are such a ****!!!!!!!!
agree , koreans should be happy to have such a kindheated
actor .I don’t like him much as actor anymore , but i would like to praise him for his good charity work .
Most people are disappointed on him due to his gay look , especially with his long hair .For me just his personal choice , none of our bussiness anyway .
Good for you Yong Joon. You will be bless with good health, more wealth and will be loved by more people.
I’m sure that those kids and their families may not even heard of the country korea, but they will know it now that there is a country called korea who has helped them in their education.
To the writer, you should feel proud that Yong Joon has put the country name ‘KOREA’ on the wall of the Sri Lanka school… he is doing a good deed…!
1)are you jealous that he wasn’t donating to your pocket? tell Yong Joon, he will ‘donate’ to you if proven that you need it.
2)i’m not from Japan either… who says that he only has fans in Japan????!!!!! and i’m not even an ahjumma…..
3)PS doesn’t write good things about BYJ. even if this guy is doing a good deed, they will still write something negatively… why? because PS is not his fan. If it is the writer’s idol, i bet with all of you, she/he will praised her/his idol up to the sky…
