For people like me who lack the skills and discipline to learn it, beatboxing is an amazing talent but it seems recently, Korean netizens, U.S. K-Pop fans, and even Vietnamese sites have taken a notice to thebeatboxhitman2.
Recently, Stephen Hemmings, aka thebeatboxhitman2, has been receiving a lot of attention from blogs/sites covering Korean entertainment for his beatbox work on K-Pop songs. It seems even the variety talent programĀ Star King has taken notice of him, and fans can cast their votes to see him on Star King.
From DBSK’s “Mirotic” to new group 2NE1’s “Fire,” and even more recently Girls Generations “Tell Me Your Wish“, the response for his videos have been tremendous.
We were able to get a brief interview with him check it out below.
PS: Tell us a little about yourself.
SH: Well, my name’s Stephen Hemmings. I was born March 29th, 1989 and have been beatboxing for a little bit over 7 years. The first time I heard and saw beatboxing was when I [saw] this commercial on TV by Twix and Rahzel was the one beatboxing, and I found it so cool that I just had to try it. So I learned the basic beats on my own..and began to build upwards from there.
PS: How long you’ve been posting up videos?
SH: I have been making beatbox videos for about 2 years now. I didn’t start it as a whole beatbox remix thing in the beginning. I never did a friendly intro..or even a fancy ending. I was just an ordinary everyday youtuber posting videos on youtube not really expecting many views because I wasn’t as good back then. I’d probably make about 2 videos a month back then and once I became bored with that I decided to do beatbox remixes over American songs and a few videos gave me my boost such as Jordin Sparks‘ “No Air” and Sean Kingston’s “Beautiful Girls“.
PS: What made you choose to do Korean pop songs?
SH:Well I basically listen to anything that is pleasing to the ear, I’m very open to new kinds of music and ideas and I especially love the Korean culture
.
PS: How has the overall response been?
SH: My overall response has been astounding. I never expected to have so many people view my videos. The first day I had it up before I went to bed I had around 500 views, which was alright. Then I woke up and had over 6,000 views and over 216 youtube emails of saying how amazed they are and that they hope to see me on Star King which I hope comes true ^_^.
PS: Any favorite Korean musicians, actors, etc?
SH: Well, actually I am pretty new to the whole K-Pop scene but from hearing a few artists I so far like Super Junior, Big Bang, Girls Generation, BoA, 2PM, Wondergirls, etc. I never seen any Korean movies yet but I surely plan to
.

He’s AWESOME!!! He just made that song SOOOO much better.
That boy can sure box. I’ll vote for him.
Also, looking at others comments…it’s really pitiful. Come on people, how old are we? Shouldn’t we know better by now? Calling a person by color isn’t racist, it’s more of ignorance if you think it through. When society makes it commonplace, some assume that saying things a certain way is acceptable. We the people of the world have come a long way from the past have we not? Yes, it isn’t perfect, but I do believe I can say that we’ve learned greater understanding of each other from all parts of the world. The past will show you what real racism looks like. If your skin wasn’t the same color as the majority in power you were oppressed of your natural rights as human beings. The things I see today on the news, a lot of it is ignorance. Something, you’ll realize you’re ashamed of when you learn your way of doing or saying is wrong. We as human beings, as long as we are alive, well and living for the better, can change for greater understanding of each other.
All wise people know this: “Ignorance isn’t bliss.”
PS: Excuse me for fragmented sentences and being long-winded hehe
JIA YOU NI MEN<(^_^<)

@christa
You do have a point ignorance is contagious in this world/
he has mad skills and what makes it amazing is that he self taught himself. ^_^
Hey I have never posted on this site but yeah i have read all the (stupids) comments about asians being racist and let me tell you something:
SINCE WHEN CALLING A BLACK MAN ‘BLACK GUY’ IS RACIST?
Ok I admit it’s not very classy to call him like this, but don’t get me wrong, there is nothing racist in this. I haven’t seen any racist comments, you guys are stupid or what?
I’m totally amazed at some ignorance on this board and this whole race issue. How ridiculous it is!
BTW, I like Stephen but I do think it’s not very original, he does the same thing over and over again. And I do think he has some anger/personality disorder judging by the way he’s answering, kind of agressively…
Well what do you believe is original these days hm? Doing solo beatboxing..? That has been done alot before..even if it doesn’t appear original..i execute it properly..and if it makes my fans happy then there’s no problem
it’s not worth it. people will always argue, and say that something is racist.
yes, i think he is answering quite aggressivly, but he is trying to defend himself, so that wouldnt mean he has a personality disorder, hes just defensive. Don’t worry about him, or anyone else, it’s pointless because he is narrow minded enough that he can’t see that some people were just stating their opinions. [as he did state his about Daichi] so fair is fair. he can’t handle critisism. and that’s okay, it’s hard to accept mean critisism and so he’s defensive. i would be defensive too, and so would you, probably.
Whatever. He’s not going to listen so I suggest we [everyone] just gives it a rest.
There is a difference between an opinion, constructive criticism, and just plain rude. Read the way the negative comments were and maybe you’re narrow-minded self would realize it
it all depends on how you look at it. calling me “narrow-minded” may get me angry, but you’re the only one in contradiction to yourself.
Obviously, yes, there IS a difference. Yet, for someone who loves to talk, you seem to not know the difference.
talking is something called communication smart one and yes i know the difference. you obviously don’t know the difference of delivering information so leave it at that
there is more than one way to deliver information. i guess you have yet to realize that “delivering information” is exactly what i am doing. you just don’t want to see/hear it because it is not the best of news.
learn to “deliver your information” in a way that would help a person learn how to change their beatboxing form instead of being a lil prick and saying someone else on here is better than me.
i did deliver my information. i don’t want you to change your form, it’s unique. i didnt say anyone was better than you, i said that not everyone will like you.
nice choice of words =>, “prick” haha! very entertaining!
yea i know isn’t it? ^_^
yeah, of course it is!
Thats pretty good I wonder how many times you practice
what Vietnamese sites are you talking about?
racism should never have been the issue here.
people are entitled to opinions.
if you are going to put up videos displaying your talent, you should be aware that you make yourself vulnerable to negativity. not everyone will like you, period.
the amount of ignorance in these comments is surprising.
agreed. you should have known to expect not only postive responses to your video, but also negative ones.
good point.
he’s too far in by now. maybe he can learn from this, and realize that not everyone will like him.
Psht…he will never understand.
way to go man
