Epik High remixes the human soul

Bringing a new flavor to your favorite classics.

With their conquest in independent management going well and a successful operation with their recent album “Map The Soul,” the boys of Epik High are ready to bring you a bit of musical fan service. Rather than just making a brand new album or rehashing old songs, all the songs have been rerecorded and remastered to deliver a breeze of fresh air with a tinge of nostalgia.

Compiling some of their biggest hits, Epik High has partnered up with Planet Shiver for their project album, “Remixing the Human Soul.” The tracklist has just been revealed on their website, mapthesoul.com, which you will be redirected to if you click on the image below. My main excitement comes from the fact that the album features prominent female vocalists that are known for their mainstream appeal with an indie flair.

The album is scheduled to drop on July 22nd. Old or new, it’s always welcome news to hear something coming from Epik High. They may be feeding us the same old ham and eggs. This time, however, it’s a brand new concoction, a bacon omelette.

Here’s a recently released “teaser” for the new album and it gives you a taste of what is to come.

      hip hop remixed into dance/trance/pop.

first you have to remember, there’s a dj in their band.
second, where did dance/trance/pop originate? that’s right, hip hop. why? because the dj’s went and took the normal everyday beat boxing and then they mixed and were like “dude…let’s move the drum & bass up, add some lyrics here and there. sweet!” and tadaa..techno/trance/jungle/indie/hardcore/drum & bass was born.

furthermore, if you take all those that originated from hip hop with said dj, what happens? oh yeah, dance music which is just a remixed song with added techno beats, which is where the dj from original hip hop came in.

so before you call them a sell out with said “remixing your songs with dance/trance/pop tunes? RIGHTTT thats REAL hiphop…” remember that hip hop is what created those. so them remixing? not surprising. why? 2 words and a name: dj turkitz.

Everyone has different tastes, but you’re being unfair. Their lyrics when they were in Korea were, of course, standard because they were in the mainstream business and Tablo said that they werent exactly allowed to write what they wanted. But if you see the other 80% of their songs, their lyrics hold a poignant truth and boldness. Too bad you’re missing out. :P

damn kid, how far are you willing to go to support this group?

also, your opinionated remark on hip-hop is just baffling… you should just retain your thoughts!

        epik high… real hip-hop… what?

What is this “real hip-hop” everyone’s talking about?

Once again, if you’re planning on answering my question, please just retain those thoughts…

P.S. To me, Epik High is just another mainstream Kpop group that’s abusing the term “real” with hip-hop to market themselves… it’s pathetic.

        • 5 kenshin July 12, 2009 at 6:31 pm

Correction…Epik High is marketing themselves as “no genre, just music”

          • 6 Annie July 13, 2009 at 2:06 am

            no genre, just music?

That’s hilarious… every interview I’ve seen til date on Epik High, Tablo consistently and very frequently used the term real with hip-hop to market their mainstream Kpop.

            Prove me wrong.

            Thanks Kenshin!

            Haha

            • 7 kenshin July 13, 2009 at 5:40 am

              Well it’s pretty simple actually…
“No genre, just music” is a direct quote from Tablo.

Also, if you’ve listened to their songs you could tell that there’s a hint of hip hop in it as well as a mixture of many other genres.

From recent interviews about their recent album, Map the Soul, I recall them saying that this album was different from their previous ones because it was straight hip hop. And as it turns out, Map the Soul was in fact all hip hop…no tricks…

            • 8 Tablo July 24, 2009 at 12:04 pm

Link me even one time Tablo used “Real” “hip-hop,” oh yeah you can’t because he never did. Stop talking out of your ass you hater.

    • 9 comic sans July 12, 2009 at 4:50 am

Not just trance, but also breakbeats, trip hop, drum & bass, etc. I think it’s great that they experiment with other genres.

Even if this album was straight acapella, it would STILL be hip hop.

And what’s wrong with a remix album? They still have their Pieces, Part 2 album in the works.

      Lame backpackers…

    well that will be interesting.

  6. 16 Dea July 10, 2009 at 7:06 pm

    YES! This is amazing.

  7. 17 Oliver Cromwell July 10, 2009 at 7:49 pm

Oh wow. That album title is Kanye West-level pretentious.

I can imagine Tablo wearing thick-rimmed glasses and being asked to describe his music saying, “My music unlocks the mechanism which ignites the fires of the human soul.”

  8. 22 juliagulia007 July 10, 2009 at 8:24 pm

I absolutely LOVE Epik High and just finished downloading all of their albums *I know, bad me, illegal downloads…blah blah blah*. They are amazing! There is not a dull song on any of their albums. I’m super excited to hear their old hits remastered, because I doubt very much they will disappoint.

P.S. I’m listening to them right now and I cannot get enough. So, good. They are by far one of the best Korean entertainers in the music business.

  11. 27 dokly July 11, 2009 at 1:05 am

It’s all good. there’s plenty of oversaturated teeny bopper shat that copies trends and probably won’t be remembered after a short period of time

    • 28 kitsune26 July 11, 2009 at 2:05 am

i.e. Epik High! haahaha. they copy REAL hip-hop. just cos tablo can speak English–and poorly, at that–doesn’t mean he’s good at hip-hop.

  12. 32 Akamekraze July 11, 2009 at 1:14 am

  23. 46 :) July 13, 2009 at 2:07 pm

To all the people saying Epic High is overrated and to all the people who is a fan of Epic High, we all have our OWN personal opinions. Why debate whether their music is “real hiphop” or not? What’s the point? If you don’t like their music, don’t listen ! If you love their music, go support them and buy their cd or something. No need to argue ! I personally am a fan of their music. I remember the first time i listened to Epic High; I was completely blown by their lyrics<3

  24. 48 Steen July 16, 2009 at 2:48 pm

I like em because they don’t act all hard and WANGSTAHHHHH like your little TOPs and G-DRAGONS (WTF). Big Bang’s the real “sellout” when it comes to hip-hop.

    • 49 kitsune26 July 17, 2009 at 2:10 am

umm, dude, no one who knows hip hop would EVER consider Big Bang hip-hop. they’re music is just K-pop dressed up badly in baggy jeans, bling, and high-top sneakers. Epik High still suck, though! haha!

  25. 50 me July 17, 2009 at 2:50 am

damn kitsune.. calm your nipples. how many comments did you post about how much you hate epik high? o_o
just like “:)” said, we all have different opinions so if you don’t like them, don’t listen to them… it’s that simple rofl.
    also.. “sam”.. don’t be a doucheface -_-

  26. 51 D.Or.K July 18, 2009 at 4:22 pm

Oh, my. Epik high antis, never seen any before….

Anyway, super exited about the remix album!! Gonna buy it the day it commes out, on Tablos birthday! :)

  27. 52 Blah July 24, 2009 at 1:51 pm

who cares? if you like it, you like it. If you don’t, then you don’t.

If I remember correctly, they are producing remixing the human soul AND Map the Soul themselves.

Nobody else is doing it for them. That’s why Map the Soul is only avaliable on their site.

They are the ones doing everything.

They aren’t selling out then obviously. No record company is telling them what to do. They are doing everything themselves right now.

If you don’t like them, that’s cool. Your free to voice your opinion.
