2NE1’s Minzy quits school

2ne1_minzy_20090716.jpg

Following in the footsteps of Big Bang in ways other than music. It seems like young pop idols are just dropping out like flies.

It turns out 2NE1’s maknae, Gong Min-ji has decided not to pursue a high school career. Being only fifteen, she will graduate from middle school, but with the rising fame of 2NE1, Minzy doesn’t need that unnecessary distraction of school. Why would you if you’re in a chart topping girl group?

Her Big Bang sunbaes, squinty eyed Dae-sung and baby Seung-ri, also both quit high school to concentrate on their music career. Last year, Dae-sung passed his high school qualification exam, and recently it was just announced that Seung-ri passed them as well. Minzy says she plans to do the same thing.

In the face of fame, education becomes an afterthought. Out of the rising girl groups, only 4minute’s Hyun-ah and So-hyun have publicly declared that they actively try to keep up with their studies and attend classes. It wouldn’t be a surprise though if they suddenly declare they’re too cool for school in the near future.

    lol doesnt surprise me
its the only way they can be famous!!!

  3. 3 sandy July 17, 2009 at 1:10 pm

ummm…. she can continue her schooling.

  4. 5 joelib July 17, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Mm it was going to happen sooner or later..

It worked out for Daesung and Seung ri so it doesnt surprise me shes following in their footsteps

  5. 7 pickuboo July 17, 2009 at 1:16 pm

    How about homeschool?

  6. 8 Brian July 17, 2009 at 1:17 pm

    she can always go back

  7. 9 Annie July 17, 2009 at 1:19 pm

@forean, Are you kidding me? Ha Ji Won is an A listed actress and she still managed to finish college.

  8. 10 spazifuwantto July 17, 2009 at 1:24 pm

    Kpoppers are drop outs

  9. 11 JJ July 17, 2009 at 1:24 pm

Ouuuuh, she’s wearing black circle lenses :D :D:D

  10. 12 rean July 17, 2009 at 1:24 pm

umm..what to say..quitting school..for me, people without education have no where to go..although she or he is a highly famous artist..how about her parents? Do they allow her?

  11. 13 Lena Lee July 17, 2009 at 1:27 pm

Shes stupid and her parents are even dumber for letting her dropout. There have been other stars who are bigger then 2ne1 and they still finished school and even went on to college! omg its possible.

Why you gonna drop out and you didnt even get a chance to experience high school?

Yeah she might be famous now but shes gonna end up like the rest of them kiddie turned stars…once she gets older shes gonna realize she never had a childhood and shes probably going to wild out lol. I mean this girl alreay acts wayyy too grown for her age (dropping into splits and humpin the grown?)

**2ne1 fans…yeah go ahead and spaz out, have a heart attack, take up for your godness..because they can do no wrong* [rolls eyes]

i just hope YG pays these girls handsomely for their work. singers/groups dont make that much money like people think they do. all the money from the sales of their albums (which sales are low dued to downloading) goes back to the company (for all the money they put out for promotions). most singers make their money from concerts and endorsements.

  12. 15 DBSJSHINee July 17, 2009 at 1:33 pm

She shouldn’t drop out of school.
Its a good going now that she’s famous. When her popularity drops in the future, she’s going to regret it. She should at least get the high school cert.
But if she does it like Dae and Seungri, I don’t see why not.

  13. 16 krooxy July 17, 2009 at 1:37 pm

loool. wonder when she’ll start regretting. Can you even get a job if u don’t even go to high school? That is assuming IF something bad happens and fame dies out and she needs to look for a job.

  14. 17 Itzsummer July 17, 2009 at 1:39 pm

school sucks good for her! i wish my parents would let me do that what a great idea. Good luck Minzy

  15. 18 hmmm:) July 17, 2009 at 1:39 pm

Retarded! Atleast finish highschool. That is what my mom says. It is embarrassing if you don’t finish high school. If you do then I’ll be happy and have no worries about you and college.

YG had better pay GOOD money. I highly doubt it though. So much illegal downloading. Her parents are probably supporting her on the outside, cause the cash flow they get from her. BUT on the inside I bet they are a nervous wreck? What if popularity slows? What about when she gets older and no one wants her? So many things can happen. I stand by what I say, ATLEAST FINISH HIGH SCHOOL.

    • 19 loveshatori July 17, 2009 at 2:07 pm

      embarrasing ???
if education is as important as you say it doesnt matter what form it is
shes getting her education just not the way you did
do you think thats wrong or not adequate??
not everyone has your life or your dreams
so shes choosing to not go to school
is she stopping her education which obviously the most important thing no!!!!!
shes studying on the side and then passing her exams if she was retarded as you claim she would have just quit that all together why bother with even studying or even trying to pass the exams or even going to college like all the the yg artists
from what i observe she and her parents find education important but its obvious shes cant handle both school and a career
she doesnt want to be absolutely stressed out she wants to sleep more than 3 hours a day
like people say shes too young its not a time to be taking in more than is healthy

      • 20 hmmm:) July 17, 2009 at 4:28 pm

To start off I DID NOT CALL HER RETARDED. Did I clearly write ‘Minji is retarded.’ No I didn’t honey. Get it right. I am pretty darn proud how I am getting my education. Going to school day in day out. Taking summer school classes isn’t easy. If passing her exams is all she wants then fine with me. Just because you can pass an exam means you achieved what you are clearly capable of. I sure Minji has smarts to achieve more then just passing her exams, but if she wants to settle for less then I am fine with that. It isn’t my life that is going to affected. If I was her mother I would push her and support to stay in school. That is what a mother should do. Again I stand by my questions. What happens if something major happens? What will Minji have left? The education she has just to pass exams? The minimal skills aside from music or dance? It is really important. I study hard and still get more then 3 hours of sleep. Actually there are day where I get barely 2 hours. I am still alive. Do you honestly knew her life? I know I don’t. Most of your accusations are assumptions as far as I know. Or they seem like assumptions. You are obviously a fan and is supporting your band 100%. I don’t mind that. I also don’t mind kids who drop out and have no where to go afterward. They are dead broke and in MAJOR debt. Those are the people I care less about. When they knew they had a chance to get the education they needed but still chose to not get it.

Accept my comments or not. I see you are a ‘die-hard’ fan. I see you’ve comment mostly on people who opposed the idea. Like it or not, people have their opinions on situations. You cannot go and defend your ‘idol’ every single time someone says something ‘harsh, bad, or mean’. No sweeties I am not jealous either. I LOVE my life. I love the fact I have privacy and that I can go about as I want freely.

        • 21 loveshatori July 18, 2009 at 2:36 am

okay since you gave such a lengthy responce i think out of respect i’ll give you a proper response in return
to start off you clearly said retarded so i naturally assumed that you called her retarded but since you didnt im glad you arent those people that senselessly dish out needless insults on the internet
second im glad you liked highschool i did too
im glad you were proud of your accomplishments in no way did my response criticize your learning experience what im saying is that the alternatives like homeschooling and online courses are a good supplement
considering minzy’s situation (her situation not yours) homeschooling and online courses i believe is much more fitting
          its flexible and time efficient
unlike highschool were there is a set schedule
third you say that you study hard and at times sleep 2 or 3 hours a day
sorry to say but thats unhealthy especially during times when a person is young
thats another reason why i think studing at home would better minzy will be able to sleep more
shes able to rest and not feel the stress of highschool life
im not talking about learning the material but the tests, the quizzes and homework
these things have set dates and deadlines
knowing that shes busy with her 2ne1 schedule i find it likely that schoolwork would coincide with it
i dont want minzy or another idol passing out on stage or getting iv shots just to keep up with a schedule they cant handle
forth i disagree that a mother should push their children to do something their children can’t handle
minzy choosing not to attend school shows that she thinks that highschool will be strenuous in combination with activities
fifth if minzy is following daesungs and seungris path i dont see how anything is horribly wrong
yes she is planning to pass her exams but to do what??
to go to college you make it seem like she passes her exams and thats it look at daesung he went to a good university
all minzy is doing is not taking the traditional route that all her peers are doing why
          ??
because she obviously has a life, an opportunity and dream that others dont
          okay to finish it off
from what i read you just clump everyone who drops out of school together and categorize them
instead of looking at their individual life and then making your judgement
i just hope when making your judgments you think more like a real judge and take every case seperately
minzy isnt like regular highschool drop outs
shes not doing it because she doesnt want to study
or to go clubbing, doing drugs or wasting her life away
stars that wind up broke and wasted are those who are careless
maybe you find this a far reaching assumption but minzy is a smart and mature for her age
she has the work ethic, determination and confidence to be successful
she also knows herself more than any of us if she chooses to forgo a traditional highschool experience
im sure she plans to work even harder to succeed in the future
im sorry this is really long but i dont want to be mistaken for some diehard fan im just a person that cares for another human being that i admire
i would say the same thing for another idol if it was appropriate
and im glad you love your life im sure you are not jealous
i dont say things that are germane

    • 23 haha July 17, 2009 at 4:46 pm

Do you have to go to high school… to get a education? celebrities have alternatives like home schooling. At least she’s still thinking about going to college. Besides, if she does continue high school… with her career, she might only attend 40% of the school year. That’s a lot of skipping school.

      • 24 hmmm:) July 17, 2009 at 5:04 pm

Not exactly, I meant a GOOD education. If minji is just trying to stay minimal and only exceeding to pass exams I see no use. If she wants more, well good for her! Home school is perfectly fine. As long as she studies really. I see she has other dreams in her mind. Yet again just be cautious. I honestly just think it would ALSO be good for her to TRY OUT highschool life. Don’t want her to miss out on a child hood. :)

I just have to say I was raised differently. My parents are like a drill sargent when it comes to my education. They want the best and I am trying to achieve. I guess it how one will look at it. Is a GED really something though? Can it take her far? I am just asking. I am not familiar on how degrees work in Korea. I know here in America GED is like having nothing. Well I mean it can get you some jobs here in America but not alot right? :/

        • 25 diadori July 17, 2009 at 10:12 pm

First of all, a GED is something, you moron. It is EXACTLY the same as a diploma. Stuck-up people like you are the ones who think it’s “nothing”.

Secondly, one does not have to go to a traditional high school to receive a “good” education.

Perhaps, you should think for yourself instead of blindly following your parents.

          • 26 hmmm:) July 18, 2009 at 1:12 am

Yeah it is something, I figured. I just asked a simple question. Sorry if I don’t shoot as low as getting a GED. Nope not following my parents. I had dreams of my own. So what if they are the same as my parents? They want to give me what they didn’t have growing. Not having the option of going to school because of the damn war. Working to send money across the world to support family. Hmph, atleast I know I’ll make it somewhere too.

  16. 27 Jane. July 17, 2009 at 1:44 pm

As long as you pass those tests you can still get you’re diplomas..but you won’t be receiving the education that everyone else is. It was a hard decision but with all her schedules I don’t think she has enough time for school..its stupid but its also understandable. Whatever..just hope they continue staying in the spotlight..fame doesn’t last that long.

  17. 30 ice July 17, 2009 at 2:02 pm

I don’t like idols who drop out of school. Other idols like SHINee still goes to school even they have busy schedules. If others can manage, why drop out. Just means they can’t manage their time well.

Education is far more important than fame.

    • 31 loveshatori July 17, 2009 at 2:13 pm

you say that but how long and how often do they go
i mean look at what they are doing
its impossible to have the time
fans are kidding themselves of they think taemin actually attends most of the school year
yg just happens to more pratical and outright
drop out and we will give you a more flexible learning schedule so you dont die from stress and sleepless nights
for her situation its a good idea

      • 32 ice July 17, 2009 at 8:58 pm

What is practical about that? They are not getting the right education. Sure they can study by themselves or from a tutor but its not the same. I know they have a tight schedule, but seriously who arranges their schedule? Why are they always tired? Its because of their company. It just shows how irresponsible YG is. Letting their artists drop out like that is not a good example for others. It like saying that Education is not important.

        • 33 loveshatori July 19, 2009 at 4:02 am

          why isnt it right?
can you explain that to me please?
people say education is important bottom line shes getting the education
all she is missing out is the experience
from what i see she willing to sactifice that for the life of an artist
in the end its her dream
all i’m saying is that people are getting the wrong impression
yg is not saying education is not important why else would she be studying online or at home to get a dimploma
all they are implying is that traditional school will not be a good fit for minzy so instead they are opting for homeschooling with will be more flexible

  18. 34 siggity July 17, 2009 at 2:05 pm

It’s rather unfair to say it’s stupid or bad…after all, she’s engaged in a full-time job, and it’s not as though she is abandoning her studies: she’s still getting tutoring and online classes (I think)and is going to take the qualification exams. Going to an actual high school is not necessary for a good education, it’s just the most common method of getting that education. Balancing her music career and formal schooling would be a killer schedule–how many celebrities are fainting or suffering from depression due to being overworked? At her age, it could be even worse! And to people who say “oh, she’s only performing once a week, it’s not bad”—there’s only one or 2 actual performances, but there are countless hours of rehearsal and training that lead up to each performance, particularly if they are broadcasted to huge audience. Plus there’s preparation for shooting their next mv, preparing for their full album, taking part in promotional activities, and working to establish 2ne1 as more than just a quick fad.Unless you’ve lived that sort of hectic life, don’t be so quick to judge…

    • 35 nicole:) July 17, 2009 at 2:15 pm

but she hasn’t even gotten into highschool and she’s already chosen to not pursue it. i feel like she should’ve atleast tried. and she’s big on the charts and all, but what happens after? with little education what will be her future? we all know that fame doesn’t last forever.

      i’m not saying she’s a bad person. i just think it’s a poor decision.

but a job is a job and it’s better than nothing.

  19. 36 x81790 July 17, 2009 at 2:24 pm

What are you people whining about? Minji is still going to be studying (just not in school) and she’ll be getting her equivalent of a America’s High School G.E.D. She can pursue college after that if she chooses to.

  20. 37 squash a bug July 17, 2009 at 2:25 pm

REALLYY BADDD influence on teens these days. You can’t be a singer FOREVER… it’s that old saying, you make money with your face in the entertainment industry. When ur old, u rely on your knowledge, cuz ur face would be old and wrinkly, and ur voice would croak… it’s just STUPID to quit school this early, at least wait till u grad. high school, she’s like what 14? just graduated from middle school?? dropping out already?? wow…

oh and that picture is SOOO photoshoped… just saying, her eyes aren’t that big, and her skin isn’t that light colored… yea.

    • 38 loveshatori July 17, 2009 at 3:01 pm

if minzy’s decision is pushing teenagers to drop out than good for them
they probably were failing anyways and are stupid and delusional enough to think that their life is anything like minzy’s
they are just probably looking for a poor excuse to drop out

    • 39 Kwak July 17, 2009 at 10:03 pm

When you’re old you relly on your knowledge? Give me a break. Graduate from highschool and tell me in 10 years if you remember all the sh*t that you studied. Life is all about learning and everything you learn isn’t from school. Any unemployed graduate from university can tell you that, while cursing the thousands they owe in student loans.

  21. 41 Kyla July 17, 2009 at 2:25 pm

    Wahhh, minzy D;

i wouldn’t do that just incase the music career was a failure..

  22. 42 wow July 17, 2009 at 2:30 pm

hasn’t she heard of home school? what kind of parents does she have? jeez she’s 14!!!!!!!

    • 43 loveshatori July 17, 2009 at 2:45 pm

      uhhh yeahh
how else would she be able to pass highschool exit exam if she didnt
honestly popseoul is getting soo annoying
too cool for school my ass shes too busy for
      it
shes studying on online and etc
seriously do people think do you think her parents would have let her drop out if they didnt get some kind of compromise

  23. 46 Nick July 17, 2009 at 2:34 pm

YG is either being retarded or money suckers. The kids at this age can’t think for themselves. High School is the good opportunity to ground your basic knowledges and expand the visions, eventhough some students don’t realize it right away. Of course when you were high school, you just hate studying and wants to work because the short-lived benifits come instantly. High school is the time of no worries and more opportunities if you manage it right. Thise who hate high-school, please visit your school’s accdemic assistance to find out your problems.

    • 47 loveshatori July 17, 2009 at 2:47 pm

      thats why you have parents
minzy was not the only one who made this decision
her parents obviously saw that it was a good compromise
their daughter is still able to pursue an education while also being able to be part of 2ne1

  24. 48 seoulli July 17, 2009 at 3:21 pm

wow shes my fav but that was dumb! she could of did school work on the tour bus and got a tutor

  25. 49 Alexandria July 17, 2009 at 3:31 pm

    dumb chick.

yeah we might think high school was wack and we hated homework but looking back i wish i could go back to my old high school days.

prom, parties, basketball/football games, random memories in school, award ceremonies, senior prank day, graduation walking across that stage. shes going to lose out on all of that.

i feel sorry for kids who are in the entertainment business. didnt parents learn from michael jackson? that poor man was a singer since he was 5. he never had a childhood and you saw what happen to him once he got older, he started to have the mindset of a child. wanting to have his childhood.

    RIP MICHAEL

    • 50 Popeye July 18, 2009 at 9:43 am

Yeah I’m sure Korean students look back and think “Sigh… I wish I was back in highschool too. The late night mandatory study sessions. The beatings from teachers. The saturday classes. The nose bleeds from staying up till 4 am memorising. The standardised tests…the university entrance exam preparation…” Highschool in Korea is awesome.

  26. 51 dorkyyhae July 17, 2009 at 3:49 pm

Doesn’t she know about homeschooling? I mean, you can still be famous even though you’re studying. I think it’s not right for her to quit school just like that. She’s only 15. geez =.= What a waste.

  27. 53 woah July 17, 2009 at 4:05 pm

She is not very nice to look at. Not hot at all and can’t sing. She’s not going to get very far.

  28. 54 Phuong Nhi July 17, 2009 at 4:20 pm

    omgg..it’s really bad

  29. 55 haha July 17, 2009 at 4:30 pm

Are you guys just reading the title of the article, but not the article itself? Really. Where did it she say quiting her education? Did you see 2ne1TV, where she stated she was studying to get a Korean equalvent to a GED?

I think most people here speak out without even reading what it says in the article. Maybe you guys should start paying attention to your own schoolwork.

  30. 56 S T A R R ** July 17, 2009 at 4:42 pm

because they have the career they’ve decided to quit school?
    whatta?!!

  31. 57 Catacataca July 17, 2009 at 5:34 pm

Oh please, people. Have you not read properly or understood what you’ve read at least?

Minzy’s not going to school but she’s not going to stop studying. It’s either she’s homeschooling or taking online classes since she’s going to be taking her high school qualification exam. To be able to take said exam, you need to have passed the requirements for it (grade credits and more).

    Geez.

  32. 58 Reality July 17, 2009 at 5:38 pm

Opportunity only comes around once in a life time. If you are lucky twice. You can always return to school, but you cannot go back to that opportunity you let pass you.

Not everyone is fortunate to get such and opportunity. MINZY IS DOING THE RIGHT THING.

So, what about all those highly educated women out there that do nothing with their education once they get married? They just get an education to marry into a good family and retire off their husband. Is that any worse than not getting an education and establishing a career to support yourself. At least Minzy won’t be dependent and strap to a man’s money.

Yeah, you girls know who you are.

  33. 59 rainymondays July 17, 2009 at 6:08 pm

I can see how dropping out of school would help with the stress that comes with fame. But I have to agree with some of the people on here who believe that it’s kind of a bad decision on her part. You don’t always get the best education sitting behind a computer doing online classes. Trust me, I’ve done them. The experience of school alone would be enough to make me choose sitting in a classroom over internet-based courses any day. I’m sure that anyone who has been to school knows that there are things you learn there that you can’t learn anywhere else. Furthermore, studying for the sole purpose of passing an exam gets you nowhere. You don’t remember a thing when its all over. For those of you who think that maybe school just isn’t for her and she’s already made her choice: how would she know if she hasn’t even given it a chance?

She’s really talented. But I hope she keeps studying so that she has something to fall back on when the fame dies down. This album is really good…but can people say for certain that 2NE1 will still be popular in 5 years? 10 years? 30 years?

  34. 60 Nick July 17, 2009 at 8:45 pm

GED is not that equilvalent to high school in real life. We know how easy it is to pass GED exam. Let’s just say this year we lower the academic scores of those who got GED. Well, we let some get in though just for a safe reason. Of course, if Minzy has to choose only one or no shot for 2NE1 for her, I support that decision. The thing is if the company supports or values the education system, they won’t make her choose only one. Many young artists do both, they just need to make the deal about how many times they need to attend their schools and how to follow the skip classes. I never blame the kid for this, because they don’t know that they have choices.

  35. 61 yuli July 17, 2009 at 8:58 pm

she’s only 15??? is this for real?. dang! unbelievable.

oh well, opportunity comes only once, or maybe never. strike while the iron is hot. :D

What a moron, SunMi and Sohee dropped out because they are going to be in America for a year, or two if they’re lucky. They even stated once they get back to Korea (if they go back) they will have to start where they left off, or take GED type classes that Korea offers. Pretty silly to start school in America when the classes are not always teaching the same things. Trust me I know I had to come to American during junior high.

They would have been kicked out for being out of school that long. Minji dropped out because she’s a lazy little girl, just like the girls in SNSD not wanting to go to college because what? you’re performing on some corny music stages, while Wonder Girls are performing on a city wide tour? lol SunMi and sohee had no problem doing school when they were just small timers performing on these little music stages, 2NE1 ain’t even selling that hot, and someones already dropping out. these girls are feeling themselves a little too much for a generic little pop poser hip hop group that leeches off of big bang LOL.

Woah melodyholic you’re retarded. You obviously didn’t read the article on Sun mi and So hee. Plus, what the hell did you expect them to do when they’re in the U.S? Fly back and forth to S.Korea which is a 15+ hour flight from NYC. Even if Sun mi and So hee didn’t go full time they still tried and managed a year of high school. Even though it sucks, their reason is more legitimate because they’re halfway around the world.

I don’t like children dropping out of school..but this is not the end of her world. Why should she regret it? Right now she has a job, it is not permanent obviously and fame fades..but why is it impossible for her to continue her education later and do online courses and maybe even go to college? Who dictates that she is stupid and dumb and that she is a bad example for other teens? Is it a given that she must work full time and do High school as well? Please..if this is her choice..that is exactly what it is. I bet you that she will have a good life and things will work out well for her..just like they did for a number of people I know, some of them even make more than others who went to highschool.

I would drop out of school if I could too, but then I wouldn’t have a career like they have. I would understand how much that means to them and that school isn’t top priority and it’s just too much to handle. I really think that as long as they’re enjoying what they’re doing, and their families are really cool with it, then it doesn’t matter. And she does have alot of talents and her fame is just on the rise. I just think that they have to be sure that it’s the right thing and that they’ll either make it big in music, or lose everything.

i hate this, i hate this, i hate this.

people learn outside of highschool. because you’re not going to remember every little detail they tried to shove in your heads. you’re going to remember the life lessons.

yeah. quitting highschool isn’t such a grand idea. but she’s got money to support herself.

POPSEOUL, take down this article, people are getting roudy.

I don’t care about the social activities of highschool (which were the worse years of my life)..but as long as she’s receiving some form of socialization and education (now and in near future), then that’s good for her. I mean…education does not necessarily have to be all academic..but life lessons and skills from her art of choice (music, dance, singing, etc). I would expect myself to be “oh she’s crazy to drop out.” But heck, do we really remember and need some of the stuff they taught us in highschool, and do we really need the highschool drama (well, I’m talking about American highschool)? I would have rather skipped highschool and gone straight from middle school to college. Though hopefully she gains a lot of knowledge and wisdom in her journey. But I’m all against having minors being overworked and denied their “childhood and teenage fun”…don’t they have child labor laws over there? Anyway, it’s not our business what she does unless it is obvious that she’s not happy. But then management companies are really good at concealing and brainwashing. heh. I’m confused.

Wow ugly and dumb is not the way to go.

Atleast SNSD all have finished or in the process of finishing high school and some going to university. They also can count on their looks if education doesn’t work out for them.
