Korean dramas are truly a staple of Korean pop culture, and even if you’re not into the whole Asian entertainment scene, there’s really no doubt that you’re at least somewhat familiar with the concept and the general stereotypes surrounding Korean dramas. Most often even if you have no interest in KPOP, you may be hooked on Korean dramas. The stereotype of Korean dramas being filled with vengeful relatives willing to shove the main character off a cliff, unprecedented bouts of terminal cancer, and sob-inducing love stories are a thing of the past. Contemporary and popular dramas are now filled with perspective, optimism despite hardship, and minimal crying (although it still can get intense sometimes).
Let’s look at two recent very, very, very popular Korean dramas, whose popularity has expanded beyond the borders of Korea.
The 2007 summer darling known as “The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince” was a 17 episode MBC drama that captured the hearts of many with its low key, yet sophisticated aesthetic and personalities. Based off a popular novel by Lee Sun-mi (who was also the screenwriter), Coffee Prince offered a fresh shot of espresso to the drama scene with its charming production value, perspectives on love, and flirting with the idea of homosexuality. Backed by a superb cast of many, Yoon Eun-hye as the boyish Go Eun-chan went from average drama heroine to “it girl” with this role, and Gong Yoo as the aloof Han Gyul had all the ladies wanting a man who was man enough to just give into love.
As the third drama incarnation of the mega popular manga series “Hana Yori Dango” by Yoko Kamio, KBS‘s ”Boys Over Flowers” still managed to make many fall in love all over again. Boys Over Flowers offered a refreshing and sparkly new spin on this decade old story with its opulent production value and equally glamorous cast. Keeping it fresh with the most handsome F4 of all the adaptations so far, Boys over Flowers didn’t just focus on the relationship between Geum Jan-di (Goo Hye-sun) and Goo Joon-pyo (Lee Min-ho), but also highlighted the rest of F4. Boys Over Flowers had all the girls picking out a favorite because they all got a fair amount of screen time (except Kim Joon sorry dude).
What you should take into consideration is which drama offers the most enjoyable experience in its storytelling, actor chemistry, directing, visuals, etc. This isn’t a question of which drama you liked better or exactly which is a more effective drama, but rather which drama appeals to more people based on your viewing experience? If you were talking to someone who isn’t necessarily familiar with Korean dramas and just wants to watch a darn good serial, which drama would you recommend?
Boys Over Flowers or Coffee Prince?

Coffee Prince of course… as much as I’d like BOF, I’m already past the age of my teeny bopping days to have crushes on high school boys.
And I prefer men, like my Han Kyul oppa… instead of Boys Over Flower’s young adult’s acting out as teenagers whose being enraged by their hormones.
It’s just a preference.
And in terms of the whole drama per se. Coffee Prince. Boys over flowers lacks the storyline essence that makes it unique compare to coffee prince.
I’d rather recommend a drama (Coffee Prince), to my friends, which outlasts a drama considered to be a flavor of the month (Boys Over Flowers).
Because technically, if BOF has another remake with better goodlooking cast and a slightly better storyline, I think the tweens would shift it’s course to the newer version…
But if Coffee Prince was to be redone, I don’t think anyone could reprise the roles of the actors who solidified the given roles amongst themselves with sheer splendor.
It’s like saying, Coffee Prince is Coffee Prince, while Boys Over Flowers is another remake which is mediocre over its counterpart dramas that originated from other asian countries – meteor garden… anyone?
boys over flowers sucks. why? because the plot is very repetitive, and the characters never gets anywhere the first 70% of all episodes.
wILL RECOMMEND COFFEE PRINCE AFTER ALL IT hooked me into watching KOREAN DRAMAS.
an upbeat, modern and challenging rendition of the universal concept that love is blind.
The cast is perfect. Remake with other actors will have to wait after 20 years -lol
The flow keeps one interested enough to stick on the same channel even after excessive commercial breaks.
note : the fact that i liked coffee prince and is hoping that there is a part 2
does not have any bearing in my recommending it instead of BOF – LOL
: of course i love both of them, but most of all i love bof .! than coffee prince… <3
