Rookie groups debut!

Picture 4

This week, four wannabe idol groups debuted on various stages with their first televised performances: MBLAQ, BEAST, JQT and Secret. Did any of them spark your interest?

I had high hopes for both MBLAQ and BEAST, considering one group was groomed by Rain and the other had some interesting members. Unfortunately, both have yet to spark my interest; but we’ll get there later. JQT and Secret, two girl groups I had no anticipation or interest in, have pleasantly surprised me to a certain degree. Here’s a rundown of their debut performances:

JQT is a four member girl group from GP Entertainment. They recently ran an interesting marketing campaign by posting flyers with the name “JQT” everywhere throughout Seoul. Many were curious what the heck “JQT” meant and searched for the term online, making “JQT” the #1 most searched phrase at the time. One of the most interesting things about JQT is that three of its members originate from the one-hit-wonder mega group i13. Remember them? Me neither. Now, JQT has recently made its debut on Mnet’s M! Countdown with the infectuously catchy/potentially annoying song “I Fell For You.” These girls have a high probability of actually being successful so keep your eyes open.

As we recently analyzed, Secret is another four member girl group with one resident rapper and three vocals. Along with having one member from the failed girl group Five Girls, where Wondergirl Yubin and After School’s UEE originated from, the group maknae Han Sun-hwa has been cast as part of the upcoming reality show “Invincible Youth.” Secret continues to remind me of Jewelry with their smooth melodies and vocal abilities. Unfortunately, their debut single “I Want You Back” is incredibly boring. Check out their M! Countdown debut:

4minute’s new brothers, BEAST, debuted on Music Bank with their single “Bad Girl.” Maybe it’s their hairstyles or Andre Kim inspired outfits but I am simply not feeling these guys. Is it just me? It might be, since the audience of teen girls are screaming like there’s no tomorrow.

As iconic Rain’s first kpop group under his new label Jtunes, Latin vampires MBLAQ debuted on M! Countdown with “Oh Yeah.” Yeah, I’ll admit “Oh Yeah” has a ridiculously unforgettable chorus but, with the discombobulated rap verses and those hideous drop-crotch pants also seen on BEAST, I cannot convince myself to like these guys either. But I’ll admit they have potential once they ditch their current look.

I’d hand the award for best debut track to JQT with “I Fell For You.” What do you think about these potential idols?

    Well, I only love the pictures… ^^

    • 2 franco October 18, 2009 at 4:51 pm

did you notice that the boy in MBLAQ with the bleached blonde hair…is actually a copy of Hero Jaejoong from the “O” era!! that’s some poor originality…along with the vampire…(twilight reference…or if needed the reference to the Haptic Mission episode featuring Kim Hyun-Joong in his vampire look) and well…sorry and last the worst chorus in a korean pop song ever made…the english was correct but at this point, with such a little creative chorus i prefer Davichi’s My Man’s engrish lyrics…much disappointed

      • 3 psssh. October 19, 2009 at 4:18 am

God DAMN you’re such an idiot. You’re no better than the netizens screaming “PLAGARISM” at GD and everyone else.

If you haven’t noticed, the trend right now IS bleach blonde (thanks, lady gaga). His outfit/style doesn’t look ANYTHING like DBSK. Stop staring at JJ pics, get off your fat @ss and look around the music industry a bit more.

They don’t look ANYTHING like vampires, either. If they’re dressed in black, that doesn’t automatically signal “LOOK IM A VAMPIRE”…because it doesn’t. They’re trying to look mature and sexy and they are absolutely succeeeding.

Worst chorus ever? Try DBSK’s TRI-ANGLE. That song was an absolute MESS.

        • 4 franco October 19, 2009 at 11:05 am

i wont insult you because its a waste of time, i will merely correct you…but TRI-ANGLE had BoA i defy you ask anyone to compare both choruses and your defense wouldnt stand a chance…and also, “oh yeah, oh yeah” isnt a chorus its just a lack of writing ability in part due to a lack of a good writer…by the way the correct word is “Plagiarism” not whatever you wrote…if you were to actually live in korea you would notice that no koreans males have bleached blonde hair…Lady GaGa is a female…i dont know if you notice, and its not just the color of the hair on the bleached singer, but also the style…its the fauxhawk of the jaejoong from the “O” era…now you can think of it in 2 ways that they saw a truly successful image and copied it, or that they are “oh yeah, oh yeah” chorus singing gods with Lady Gaga influenced hair…as for G-Dragon, i never said anything of the sort…he takes parts of songs but creates something new, musicians often do that, and i like him just fine, due to the fact that out of all idols he actually takes important decisions to make good music but these boys didnt take anything and make it their own…that’s why its disappointing

          • 5 ZebraCrunch October 19, 2009 at 11:51 am

Geez you’re obviously the only one who would think of JaeJoong when looking at Chundoong. It’s not like Jaejoong created the faux hawk.

Sure I agree that the chorus sucks, but there has been no reference of vampires or jaejoong except for in your mind.

BTW, bleached blonde hair is a trend for male CELEBRITIES, G-Dragon, Supernova, Hwanhee, MBLAQ, B2ST, they all have it, so don’t make J.J. some kind of origin of all looks because he’s not.

          • 6 psssh. October 20, 2009 at 12:56 pm

Oh nooo, you corrected my spelling, whatever will I do now? BTW, “I” is capitalized, “its” has an apostrophe in the context you put it in, there’s no comma between fine and due. Also, I’d request you use more punctuation and less elipses. How about you *not* correct people lest you yourself are competent enough to do so.

2nd: TRI-ANGLE *was* a sh1t song, and just because you’re a Cassie who refuses to see it doesn’t mean I can’t say what I think. That song sounded like regurgitated music sheets of a 12 year old kid who composed his own song. BoA didn’t help.

Now, ZebraCrunch addressed your other points.
And yes, I usually don’t diss people, not until I realize that they’re morons. Usually, the morons are Cassies, who cannot *STOP* thinking that *EVERYONE* is copying Jaejoong/the rest of DBSK. And the fauxhawk has been around since punk rock has — the 60s, 70s. People like you, especially the die-hard Cassies, have problems facing facts and life in general outside of DBSK. Get your fat @ss on wikipedia and read up on all the beautiful trends you think DBSK created…that’s right. They created nothing. Including their songs, outfits, hairstyles, their personalities (which are assigned), and their choreography. Please don’t think them as ORIGINAL and SPARKLY.

            • 7 franco October 20, 2009 at 2:56 pm

you really need to calm down…way too offensive, i told you i am not going to insult you personally, as i dont know you and you do not know me. you are calling people morons because they state a different opinion than yours, so you try to sound big and bad on a blogging website…i will let everybody and anybody who reads your angry opinion to think whether or not you should put down the anger and get a life =) and you are incorrect when you call me a cassie…i was simply pointing out things i saw in common, you really shouldn’t use wikipedia as a source by the way or read it so much…i could write that jaejoong and hwanhee were born in brazil and grew up in the moon, and it would show up as part of the article.

              • 8 psssh. October 21, 2009 at 8:30 am

The comment wasn’t just for you, but for acutal Cassies who WITHOUT fail will compare any newcomer group to DBSK and accuse the new group of copying. Remember I the Tri Tops? They threatened to *kill* the boy. Point being, I’m sick of any boy band being compared to them, and it threw me off, sorry. It really wasn’t just for you, but the other people who commented below, too.

Anyway, the cool thing about wikipedia is that it will always be corrected BECAUSE anyone can edit it. I’ve seen articles corrected within an hour. That’s what makes it so reliable. =]

                • 9 franco October 21, 2009 at 6:44 pm

just control your estrogen…i dont compare any band to DBSK…just that particular singer…wikipedia isn’t reliable because it can be edited…an hour can make a lot of difference, and most articles dont get correct within an hour

  2. 10 -__- October 18, 2009 at 12:12 am

i rly dont think popseoul’s opinion is the same of a true fob’s. i think beast is exactly what fob girls are looking for.

  3. 12 -__- October 18, 2009 at 12:13 am

now looking at mblaq. same with them..

    • 13 TraceD October 19, 2009 at 11:47 am

MBLAQ beat those 4. Those two girl groups couldnt listen without some discomfort.

And Beast B2st what ever yeah just keep So-1 to the back and i promise ill love you..he just seems so weird and creepy to me that ill nvr watch their performances..only listen to music.

      • 14 ZebraCrunch October 19, 2009 at 11:55 am

haha at least until he changes his hair..

It’s true though, those girl groups were a bit difficult to listen to all the way through. I loved MBLAQ’s performance the most. They didn’t do the best live, but it was still most entertaining.

      • 15 kookee October 19, 2009 at 12:46 pm

haha… I sort of agree with you about So-1. There’s something about him that’s unsettling. I kind of force myself to glaze over his face and concentrate on his dancing/singing.

  4. 16 OhyeahDBSKBIGBANG October 18, 2009 at 12:23 am

MBLAQ has a certain hotness. I don’t like the song. but you can see a little Bi/Rain in their dancing.

i have to say that Secret song is the least annoying from the girl groups.

I’m not the one to go from group to group so I’m staying with my “old” idols

  5. 17 mesa mattress October 18, 2009 at 1:18 am

looks like they all had the same kind of graphic design. but it’s really about the music, that’s why super junior is still the top group in this genre.

    • 18 psssh. October 19, 2009 at 4:24 am

      WHAT? *WHAT*?

SUPER JUNIOR? Top group because of their music?! I beg to differ. 1/2 of their catalouge is lovely, the other half is downright crap. Sadly, kpop isn’t ABOUT music, anyway. And where does this come from anyway, this “Suju’s a top group”? Is there a list of “TOP GROUPS”? TBH, I’d say Big Bang or DBSK becuase they’ve achieved a lot more popularity in Korea and around Asia. Suju’s Japanese single was a failure.

      • 19 psssh. October 19, 2009 at 4:26 am

And I talk about popularity because although DBSk is popular for JJ, there has to be SOMETHING in the music to make the girls go so insane over them. Becuase I cannot use simply my own opinions to measure a band, you tend to use popularity, because that incorporates everyone’s opinion. I hope that made sense, lol.

      • 20 MelodySky October 20, 2009 at 10:14 am

THIS YEAR since Big Bang & TVXQ didn’t even promote, Suju is the top.

Their Japanese single was not a failure. It peaked at #2, and it wasn’t even all the members. Asia wide, it’s TVXQ then Suju then Big Bang.

  6. 21 SandraJun October 18, 2009 at 1:35 am

    which one is Han Sun-hwa

  7. 22 slippers October 18, 2009 at 2:06 am

With good marketing, JQT can be the next Wondergirls. That’s just my opinion. I like their song.

  8. 23 Tiff October 18, 2009 at 2:17 am

i love beast!!!! they don’t look so great..it’s like a cheap knockoff version of big bang. they even have a blonde haired g-dragon! BUT i can not stop listening to their song “bag girl” it’s soo catchy! and fun…my favorite dance song :D

mblaq…is 4th in this competition..their opening song was ehh..

everyone’s either having a comeback or a bunch of new ones..they all pretty much sound the same..we need something new.

  9. 24 Tiff October 18, 2009 at 2:17 am

    whoops i meant BAD GIRL

  10. 25 Hmmm. October 18, 2009 at 2:47 am

I vote MBLAQ, because of their sleekness and impeccable dancing. I mean, these guys were personally brought up and trained by Rain, which says alot already about them. The only criticism i had was the song not showcasing their singing abilities. The guy in the sunglasses looks like he has an amazing voice, so ill be looking forward to see MBLAQ improve and come out with more songs. I thought their outfits were actually pretty nice and went along with their song and concept. Oh and btw <3 LEEJOON & MIRYO :)

On the other hand, B2ST seems like a cheap knockoff of other boy idol groups. I can only see one or two people in there that actually have that star quality MBLAQ has. Their all pretty okay singers, and their all pretty okay dancers. Nothing amazing though. Although i am looking out for SO-1 who got cut from big bang, i dont think the rest of the group will do very well. But who knows, only time will tell.

  11. 28 Aimee October 18, 2009 at 3:23 am

i’m very bothered by that guy with the spiked (well, not so much spiked but whatever) and sunglasses in MBLAQ. he looks so much like taeyang!!! and i love taeyang, so nobody can be like him.

  12. 29 darasisinlaw October 18, 2009 at 4:21 am

    mblaq the best!!!

  13. 31 redgiantlipstick October 18, 2009 at 4:30 am

love MBLAQ!!.. their song maybe not the best, but who cares, with body and looks like that they can easily rock my world!!

  14. 32 mq October 18, 2009 at 6:48 am

omg i think i might remember i13- didn’t it consist of girls ranging from like age 7 to 17? it was in the style of one of those huge japanese girl groups

the JQT marketing campaign sounds awesome but i really don’t like the song and their voices. Secret needs more performing charisma- but their song is pretty good. B2ST is blah and the song is horrible. the MBLAQ guys got charisma- but the voices and the song isn’t that great. It’s like these guys want to be a mix of Rain and Seo Taiji and are failing. And I think having Rain backing them up makes Rain overshadow them. However, i think these guys can succeed once you hand them a better song and give them more training.

  15. 33 NyNy October 18, 2009 at 7:03 am

MBLAQ and BEAST were the best.

    • 34 Cyberhobbit October 18, 2009 at 7:25 am

BOOOOOO!!! I hated all 4 groups song’s!! nothing special about any of them. Secret and Beast’s are the most incredibly sleep-worthy.

I’m keeping out for solo-singer season with Taeyang, Brian, Hwanhee, etc… all coming out with new albums!!

      Bring on the veterans!!!!

  16. 36 Colin October 18, 2009 at 7:51 am

Why do all the debut songs sound like recycled material?

After I listened each song entirely… I can’t seem to remember even the slightest tune from every one of them.

    • 38 psssh. October 19, 2009 at 4:21 am

Some of the songs aren’t. Secret follows R&B…what R&B *SHOULD* be anyway, so props to them (seems like they aren’t getting any on here). BEAST and MBLAQ both are trying to wiggle into the boy band market with their “powerful” songs and a dance that makes it IMPOSSIBLE to sing…but they still manage.

You know what a recycled song is? SHINee’s new song, which is a scapped early version of Suju’s SORRY SORRY.

  17. 39 kawahara October 18, 2009 at 9:09 am

All I have to say is you have bad taste. JQT’s song is horrible, it sounds like a cat getting run over by squeaky golf carts… continously.

  18. 41 whataweirdworld October 18, 2009 at 10:33 am

I find both girls group were a bit boring. JQT’s song sounds like it’s targeted toward 12-15 years old.

MBLAQ….now, no matter how people are screaming about their hotness, I can’t see it. Their song is hard to like, and their live perf even harder to listen to. I try really, I just can’t get into them.

For me B2ST/BEAST is the only one out of the rookie that I like currently. They have solid live perf, some sleek dancing, annoyingly bubbly but catchy song, and horrible fashion. The epitome of boyband.

  19. 43 ... October 18, 2009 at 10:49 am

BEAST/B2ST or watever they are really look like a cheap knockoff version of some other groups. They have baby faces like SHINEE, try to look like Big Bang, go around and say wanna take the title of Beastly idol from 2pm. And as i saw from another kpop news website, they’ve changed their name meaning and it sounds a bit like DBSK [i mean the meaning of DBSK]

    • 44 homeskillet October 19, 2009 at 10:04 am

Alot of boy band are a knock off of other boy bands.

Baby faces like Shinee? …. O.o You hatin on them because they have baby faces? … You do know that they’re just teenagers, right? Barely legal to drink and fornicate! >_>

Big Bang this, Big Bang that. Blah blah blah. Them dressing up in hip hop style doesn’t necessarily mean they’re trying to look like Big Bang. Their music is hip hop and pop so they dressed like a hip hop pimp. Blame their stylist! >_>

No one is taking the Beastly image from 2pm so don’t get your panties up in a notch. If they want to call themselves Beast, let them. It’s just a name. No need to be emo about it. >_>

You sound like one of those ‘tards that got pissed because Junsu of 2pm has the same name as Junsu of BDSK. *rolled eyes* Like two bands can’t have the same meaning to their name.

Go have some coffee and donuts!

      • 45 xRawrShuShu October 21, 2009 at 11:08 am

I applaud you, that was by far one of the most logical, thought out, and a really good lucid statement. You just got the words out of “fingers”. But yea, of all of my love for big bang, they don’t OWN anything. These rookie singers are trying to make a name for themselves. Besides imagine yurself in their shoes, won’t you be esatic to debut like that? I mean seriously, lots of biased retards these days -.-

  20. 46 minjoongie October 18, 2009 at 11:13 am

Maybe MBLAQ has taken my first interest to.
it’s rain’s project and we all know that Rain is one of ambisious singer become producer
    haha

  21. 47 LalaNYC October 18, 2009 at 12:48 pm

Out of the four new idol groups, I think MBLAQ stood out to me. JQT’s voices are sort of annoying to me.. Secret seems dead and B2st just doesnt give me the rhythm. i wish the best for all the groups~

  22. 49 Dream October 18, 2009 at 4:10 pm

    MBLAQ stands out to me.

Although their song is quite ‘repetitive’, its still quite catchy and I love how they look with the heavy, vampire make-up although Im not usually a big fan of heavy make-up and eye-liners with guys.

  23. 50 c~ October 18, 2009 at 5:26 pm

    I VOTE BEAST
i’d be one of those fan girls screaming
their clothes are a bit cheesy
and they look like a rip off of big bang and suju and possible 2pm. Even though they all aren’t very good looking, i love their songs so far. Good tune, nice vocals, great choreo, and catchy beat. (to add gi kwang/ Aj is hott) they might not be as big and great has 2pm and Big Bang
but they are definitely above average adn deserve a bit of attention. I must say unlike their name, they cant rise to be the BEST boy band though.
let’s see how they do in the future.
so far it’s looking pretty good.

for blaq I was really anticipating, but it turned out as a disappointment. I might give them another chance if they do smth with their image. The repetetive of oh yeah was giving me a headache. Seriously..how can you rhymes sh*t with space ship? I love you very much Bi, and I know you can do better!

they girls are okay.. isee ntohing especially unique though.

  24. 52 hehe October 18, 2009 at 8:00 pm

    ummm
    MBLAQ
    is great
but does that guy have to have hair on his mouth
    its kinda depressing me
i think it would be much better
    without the moustace

    SOZ PEOPLE WHO LOVE MOUSTACES

  25. 53 Jessie October 18, 2009 at 10:02 pm

I love Secret’s i want you back! And i’m looking forward to dara’s bro. Lol
    Who cares?!!!

  26. 54 aeyeon October 19, 2009 at 1:17 am

who was the one that rapped first?

  27. 55 b3i October 19, 2009 at 2:36 am

god there’s so many new groups i’m getting so lazy to bother watching all their videos and get interested in them… :/

so many new groups and names and faces to rememmber

so far MBLAQ’s been the most interesting cause i’m a mega fan of 2NE1 and Dara’s bro’s in it haha

i’ll porbs check out JQT :)

  28. 56 db4lb_yo October 19, 2009 at 4:13 am

Secret has a nice song, its cute. Dont think its boring. Its a nice change from all the catchy songs.
hihihih, after this debut, girls will be like 2PM who? and they even have their own version of G-dragon. Nice song.
about MBLQ, couldn’t expect anything less, i mean Rain is the producer, nice, really liked :P

  29. 57 whoa its me October 19, 2009 at 4:23 am

damn i agree they started out kinda okay but damn they’re kinda all bad

  30. 58 ktownqueen October 19, 2009 at 5:58 am

NO. OMG. Every group is unoriginal as hell! MBLAQ just says “Oh yeah” and B2ST … is all right but CAN YOU HONESTLY TELL THEM APART?

NO. And Secret and JQT?? YAWN.

  31. 59 Chuchu October 19, 2009 at 10:48 am

I’m gonna go with Rain’s new group. Those guy’s can really nice and they have nice long lean bodies. There are very tall too. I love their dancing which we are not getting since DBSK are on hiatus until after they settle their dispute. I like Rain’s group the best.

  32. 60 Sunny October 19, 2009 at 11:44 am

    I LOVE MBLAQ…;]
    they are soooo COOL~
    the BEAST is alright!!
    !♥♥♥♥!
    keep up the goood Work~

  33. 61 bdean2 October 19, 2009 at 3:45 pm

Secret’s song is OK – some parts are catchy, other parts are a bit bland.

It seems that Secret is going for the slower tempo/nice girl image a la SeeYa and FinKL.

They need to get rid of the rapper (or get a diff. one) and do something a little more exciting w/ their dancing – that choreography was pretty boring.

  34. 62 pk October 19, 2009 at 4:54 pm

    Bcool guys!
i think they (all) have a good start and done okay with their performance but let see what happen next in da future bcuz only time will tell who’ll be in or out da trend of this ent’ment business (excuse my language cuz im not native english/korean speaking)

  35. 63 =_- October 19, 2009 at 5:18 pm

Umm ok… All I’m hearing is that MBLAQ is so cool and how good looking they are, Bi is the producer so they must be good. I’m not going to like a group based on looks… Beast, I really like the song and they sing good live. I had two attempts to see the music video for MBLAQ and I just could not find myself able to finish it. As soon as they got to the “oh yeah” and that wierd arm sway thing I just had to stop… Maybe I’ll like their next song I don’t know…

  36. 64 Roxey October 20, 2009 at 12:15 pm

Hmm, well the influx of girl groups I have to say these new ones don’t really seem to jump out at me. Seems to be just copies of what’s already out there.

With the guys, Beast didn’t seem to spark my interest though, as much I think MBLAQ’s outfits are out-there, it did grab my attention and make me take a closer look. I think they have potential (or could be just because I think they’re hot^_^) but if they are under Rain’s helm I’m sure they’ll have some measure of success. The song is catchy and I’ll probably check out their new songs just to see how it turns out.

By the way, I guess I’m not hanging in Hongdae much, but I didn’t see any of the JQT advert stuff. ^_^ I should start paying more attention.

  37. 65 sorrynalangfe October 20, 2009 at 5:26 pm

    First = MBLAQ
Second, third and fourth = you pick.

  38. 66 yan2709 October 21, 2009 at 5:15 pm

    vote for B2ST/BEAST!!!

they’re totally full with tallent and their dancing skill is awesome!

    and the others…
i think mblaq is okay, but i dont know about the other 2..

    boyband is rock!!!

  39. 67 = October 23, 2009 at 2:39 am

im looking forward to sandaras brother.!!!cheon dung!!!(thunder)… so cute..
    i want sandara’s genes.!!

MBLAQ is way different to other rookie groups!!

mblaq is giving us the sexiness of the song.. kinda Latin which is new and different to the k-pop world.!!

mblaq is NOT JUST ANOTHER K-POP GROUP!!

  40. 68 CM November 5, 2009 at 4:26 pm

    whoooh! too much drama!

    i like b2st that’s all!
