First Inwoo and now SM Entertainment is going against Mnet!
SM Entertainment made an official announcement earlier today that none of their artists will be taking part in the 2009 MAMA. That means, not only will you not be seeing trot singers Jang Yoon-jung and Park Hyun-bin at the 2009 MAMA, but you also won’t be seeing SNSD, Super Junior, SHINee and f(x) at the award show.
Apparently the reason behind SM Entertainment’s boycott is due to the fact that Mnet will choose the award winners for the MAMA using the same process they use for the M!Countdown music program, which SM states is not fair or trustworthy. SM Entertainment went on to state,
SNSD’s ‘Gee‘ won 1st place on other music programs for 9 consecutive weeks, while they hadn’t on M!Countdown, even once. Even for ‘Gee’ to simply enter their charts was about a month after the release of the song, which was during the first week of February.
Therefore, all SM artists will not be able to attend the 2009 MAMA, whose selection criteria isn’t fair or trustworthy.
SM Entertainment also went on to state that they do not like Mnet’s decision to make voting possible only to paid registered users of their website. SM Entertainment has made clear that they do not want fans of SM artists to have to fork out 3,000 KRW just to vote for their favorite artists. This has led to SM Entertainment’s decision to withdraw and boycott the 2009 MAMA.
With SM and Inwoo Entertainment’s withdrawal from the award show, that is a big chunk of artists Mnet is losing out on. Do you think Mnet will be able to put on a successful award show with all of these artists out of the picture?

can anyone tell me what the selection criteria of Mnet is? they wont just decide the winner based on the number of votes? bcuz last time I checked in the Rookie section, f(x) is winning over 2NE1 and other groups, so i guess it’s not bad for SME artists. Is that Mnet has some other criteria as well?
fan votes are only a small percent..im not sure of the percentage..but SM has the biggest fanbase anyways..
M.net’s voting criteria is based on internet polling, text messaging, and a mass of other things. Each criteria carries probably a 15 – 20% (not exactly sure) voting from the fans alone. The remaining percentage could possibly be from critics and other important people in the music industry. It’s hard to say how much of the votes are truely fan-based because the amount always changes. That’s just what I think

Even though I dislike the aspect of having fans pay to vote, it seems like all SM is concerned about is that their artists can claim a win. I mean winning is great and that IS the point of an award show, but can’t they just go to have fun and perform for their fans? Winning isn’t everything.
the M!countdown is not the only bogus award show of MNet anyway…can you still remember MNet 20’s choice awards? Not a single SM Artist won…despite the overwhelming votes of ELFs and other SM fanclubs. which goes to show that whatever criteria MNet has, it is still very doubtful.

This year Mnet banned SM artists from appearing on their Music show but still allowed fans to vote. So if SNSD were so damn popular, why didnt fans vote for them to win M!countdown?
SM are sore and so went on to boycott MAMA although MAMA needs the most publicity now being a new show. So thanks for SM cos they just gave them the sympathy they deserve for being SMs dogs for years and now finally standing up for themselves and showing the world how childish, bully-like and obviously tainted SM is.
No offence or anything to the fans but even though SNSD so calledly won 9 times consecutively that was only Music Bank, and there’s already controvercy regarding THOSE wins as is. InKi you can’t win more than three times so thats what SM is referring too. SM sounds like theyre complaining because the money they blew on KBS for those 9 wins isnt paying off and MNET are still stubborn.
And Mnets show now seems the most legit if SM is outta the running.

MAMA said the money payed for a vote is stop fans from multiple voting on their favorite artist and the money gathered from the voting is to be given to charity. It would ruin their reputation if they change their process because one entertainment doesnt agree to it.
I think SME did this because they lost one battle in the war with three of TVXQ. He is just bitter and shows he just likes winning and things going his way.

SM Entertainment is garbage. The only group I like out of that entire entertainment company is SHINee. I also agree that SM seems to be boycotting the MAMA’s because they fear their artists won’t win. They are a money hungry and greedy company that is denying their fans access to their artists all because they want them all to win. GET OVER YOURSELF, their are loads of other talented artists from other companies that deserve the awards just as much as SM’s artists. I will watch the show regardless and I’m thankful I won’t have to see SNSD and SJ perform.

@ …: f(x) is winning over 2NE1 and other groups, I have seen f(X) mv lachata, I can say is that their one of the talented girl group in korea but their not that great. Based on the mv i’ve seen and heard 2ne1’s mv have the strongest and outshines the most in other rookie groups. Also compare to all the mv’s of 2ne1 and fx….compare in the club, I don’t care, lollipop, fire than lachata the strongest mv in this year is all the 2nel’s mv than fx’s lachata. fx is a talented girlg group but their not that great at all.
When I see 2ne1 I kinda feel that they are much appealing than f(x). In terms of between the talent,singing and dances they both are good but when I see 2ne1 there is something much that outshines f(x) or other girl group. I’m not that crazy fan girl over 2ne1 being a balancing judge I can feel something different from 2ne1 members, how can I say hhhhmmmm…..the appeal of these 2ne1 members when their on stage they give hype and fire to the audiences . I like f(x) and 2ne1 but over all the winning I’ll choose 2ne1 because f(x) lack something.
Girls generation, wg, dbsk, shiny, bigbang, 2ne1, 2pm, and suju are the most popular and most talented over all, gg outstands more on f(X), 4 minutes, ham, t-ara or other new group except 2ne1 and wg….If I base who would compete in the same level it would be girls generation, wonder girls and 2ne1. I chose 2ne1 to compete with gg and wg its because even though their just a rookie group you can see them when their on stage their like a professional artist unlike those new rookies, you can see them just a rookie.

This is the other thing. Already 9 consecutive weeks of winning for Gee, still they want more. Even though a lot may disagree, honestly I think the Gee craze isn’t that strong anymore and I think it’s getting real annoying to hear those cute and fluffy sounds singing Gee all night.
I’m sure Mnet knows there’s more talent with the other groups. There’s even more and more groups coming in and with the future MAMAs, even if SM still boycotts them there’s still the “extras”.

I hated “Gee” I absolutely hated that song, so maybe Mnet felt the same way about that song, why is SME making a big deal over GG not winning Mnet countdown for that crappy song, they won numerous times on the other music stations. SM is just mad that they cannot bribe Mnet into giving their artists the award!

They just realised that without a swarm of a concentrated amount of dedicated fans who vote over and over again for SM artists they don’t have a snowballs chance in hell of winning.
That and they have issues with Mnet, M!Countdown proves who is popular with their music and if SNSD didnt win that just makes it obvious the amount of effort SM brought in to win 9 times on Music Bank and that is the money they paid to do it.
Whether some like to admit it or not but Super Junior arent as popular as they used to be, SNSD were NEVER as popular as they claimed, and they just proved it by crying like little babies that they didnt make it in Mnets chart. SHINee weren’t as active this year and their presence wasn’t well known and f(x) came out too late to compete with their competitors.
Why cant people see that SMs presence this year in the K-Pop industry was a major failure and only SM and their fans seem to think otherwise.

lol it’s obvious that many people here aren’t aware of the fued between m-net and SME. SME pissed off m-net, and thus m-net has been pretty biased about SM artists not winning any awards. It’s quite clear that this bias is true from the fact that NONE of the SM artists have won.
MAMA is based on a variety of things, including fan voting, album sales, etc, and it’s pretty clear that SNSD and SUJU pretty much dominated. Looking at all those factors, Gee is arguably the favourite to win in all categories in which it was nominated for. There is no way in hell that SM artists won’t win any awards (not saying it’ll be a full sweep).
You can love all the other groups you want, but even by just looking at only numbers, it’s quite clear that it’s not the case of SM not being able to bribe, or the fact that its artists are going to lose a fair battle. There’s really no point in sending its artists to MAMA if they’re not respectfully evaluated because M-net is whining about its incident with SM.
While I agree with the fact that SM is a corporate bully in quite a few incidents, I also agree with SM’s decision in this case. They really don’t gain much from pulling out of the competition, considering they are the favourites to win in quite a few categories. MAMA will be a failure, Golden Globe Awards will be what matters.

They always have JYP Entertainment artist and YG Entertainment artists. They could always book the Wonder girls(If they’re not already booked, i dont know who is performing) and After Skool, Son Dambi, 2NE1, etc.
I Love SM artists but theyre not the only good artists out there. If they get enough, MAMA wont be so much of a failure after.
