U-Nee tragically ended her own life in January but she’s still remembered and loved by all. To celebrate U-Nee birthday, dedicated fans and family members visited her resting place yesterday (May 3) and they shared their individual accounts and memory of the late singer. Although U-Nee is no longer with us, she’ll be remembered forever. Rest in peace U-Nee.

Why are there so many “January Suicides?

The recent death of 2 of Korea’s rising young starlets, U-Nee and Jung Da Bin, has left everyone wondering why. We question why such beautiful young stars would end their own lives. Trying to make sense of this tragedy is not easy and requires sensitivity in dealing with such a delicate subject. Since our blog does not deal with hard hitting societal issues, we decided to create another blog called PopReflections to address this matter and hopefully we can work towards understanding why U-Nee and Jung Da-Bin made such a fatal decision.

U-Nee’s album “Solo Fantasy” is finally out as a parting gift to her fans and family. There was a lot of talk about the fate of her album after her tragic decision. Phantom Entertainment felt that it was inappropriate to release it, while U-Nee’s family and fans wanted to hear her last work. The matter was resolved when all parties finally agreed to release it. The title song “Sup-Ghawn” (trans: habit) is a ballad, a 180 turn from “call call call,” which shows that she tried to find her own voice by experimenting with different genres.

U-Nee’s suicide was another addition to the “January Suicides” among Korean singers. In 1991, ballad singer, Seo Ji Won overdosed on sedatives and left us his suicide note on January 1. Then five days later, folk singer Park Kwang Suk ended his own life at the age of 32. Then two years ago, actress Lee Eun Ju hung herself in her own apartment in February.

Although Lee Eun-Ju’s suicide happened in February, it resembles U-Nee’s suicide in many ways. They both took their lives in their own apartment by hanging themselves and friends and family did not notice any change in their behavior, however they both had been suffering from depression. They also didn’t leave a suicide note, making their decision a mystery that will never be solved.

Phantom Entertainment, U-Nee’s album distributor, announced a couple of hours ago that they will NOT release U-Nee’s album, because they felt that it was inappropriate to release it after her tragic suicide. They asked the fans to be understanding of their decision, but seriously, who’s going to be understanding? If anything, they should release it for U-Nee’s sake . She worked so hard on this album and she deserves some kind of recognition for it. Also, they could use the profits made from this album to help other patients suffering from depression, or find a cause she would want to support. Phantom’s announcement just made this story a hundred times sadder.

According to U-Nee’s close friend Min Young (member of Diva), U-Nee received some treatment for her depression, but she did not go consistenty, which worsen her condition. On the other hand, U-Nee’s mom thought that she was better after she took her medication and she did not notice any change in her behavior.

The police found U-Nee in her regular sweats. U-Nee also met with her management company to discuss the concept of her music video the night of her suicide and she was expected to film her mv on the 22nd. She even texted her friend Maya (singer) the day before her suicide to say hi, which makes her sudden death even more shocking. RIP U-Nee.

Singer and actor U-Nee (26) ended her own life yesterday. She was perceived as a bright and an outgoing person, which makes this tragic story even more surprising. Many speculate that her depression and anti’s unfavorable reaction to her upcoming album were responsible for her tragic decision.

U-Nee debuted when she was in 8th grade as “Lee Hae-Ryn“, playing supporting and leading roles in various dramas and movies, including Born to Kill, Seventeen, and King and Queen. Then she changed her name to U-Nee in 2003 to release her first album. It was a rough start for the new singer, but she began to gain popularity after releasing her second album – “Call Call Call.”
