Do you think netizens and viewers made the right choice in their voting?

This year’s Mnet 20’s Choice Awards was held at the Jamsil Indoor Stadium where each of the performances revolved around the concept of “Mix N Match 20’s Choice”. From the Blue Carpet which tried to emulate this concept and the stage which combined Ice arenas with “hot” flashing lights, the performances were set to answer the question “What are the 20s to you?”

The first stage was none other than a collaboration between SG Wannabe and Boo Hal with the stage called “Music: from Memory“. I must say I was surprised when these two groups came out together, but the collaboration worked. With powerful vocals not only from SG Wannabe but also that of the lead singer of Boo Hal, their rendition of this year’s Boom Up Song “Never Ending Story” was a hit.

Next was the joint stage title “Love” between 2AM and Wheesung. They started off singing each other’s songs, “Love is Tasty” and “This Song“. 2AM’s rendition was very cute, but for some reason Jo-kwon’s action kept throwing me off. He was just off on his own trying to act all cute. Wheesung, on the other hand, impressed me with his cool attitude, even until the end where he passed the last rose out. He just swung it around like it was nothing and threw it to the section that was way off to the side.

2PM with the answer of “Sports: the Wildest“. As soon as their video intro started playing, the girls went crazy all around the arena. They gave a strong performance like they always seem to, but the highlight of the event for all the fans was the “Rain-esque” moment where water began to fall and the boys all got wet. Of course, Jae-bum ripped his shirt. The evening wouldn’t be complete if he didn’t. Ironically the host of the Blue Carpet, Park Ji-Yoon stated she would love to see him with his shirt off as would the rest of the crowd. (And yes, for those of you who doubted Jae-bum, Nick Khun, and Taecyeon’s English, they can speak well.)

And to finally finish off the first half of the program, a new underground group got to perform on a “big” stage. Jang Gi-ha and the Faces featuring the Mimi Sisters blew the crowd away with their eccentric performance. You could tell they cared less about how they looked and more about how they played the crowd, especially when Jang Gi Ha leapt off the stage only land flat on his bottom.

To start off the second half of the program, Bada and Tiara did a joint stage titled “Fashion: Colorholic“. During this stage, a fashion show itself happened with all the models wearing very G-Dragon inspired makeup and clothing except instead of whites, blacks, and reds, it was all neon colors. I can honestly say I wasn’t expecting Tiara to perform but it was all right.

Of course, last but not least, 2NE1 graced the stage with “Digital: Code 21“. The girls as always delivered a strong performance, but I don’t understand why they would lipsync their song “I Don’t Care”. Yes, their stage presence was there, but lipsyncing really did detract from their stage and the choreographer needs to tone it down for Minzy. We know that girl can dance, but some of the moves she busted out (and not entirely caught on camera) bordered on slutty.

With all the glaring camera flashes and sea of fans crowding around, it was no wonder that this year’s Mnet 20’s Choice Awards Blue Carpet carried with it everything from the “normal” black and white outfits to the power shoulder pads brought back into vogue by Son Dam-bi’s “Saturday Night“.

With a set theme this year of mix and match, it was interesting to see the predictable color combinations that each star/group decided to wear this year.

This year’s blue carpet hosts were none other than Park Ji-yoon and Koyote’s BaekGa. Her dress was the normal boring black with a nice golden ornamentation, and I think BaekGa needs to take note of Rain’s look one more time before he tries to imitate it. He could have easily ditched the table cloth and still stood out.

2AM and Ice Cream girl Chae Ara sporting hot pink, black, and white. 2AM stated that the highlight of their style was the ripped jeans, but all I noticed were their thunder thighs ripping through the skinny jeans. Didn’t anyone tell them that tight jeans lead to sausage legs? Jo-kwon looks flamboyantly precocious as usual, and I can’t take my eyes off his checkered shirt. Chae Ara looks quite simple and sweet in her little pink number with chunky black beads.

Dynamic Duo decided to dress up, but still kept it “hip hop” with their untucked shirts and tennis shoes. By the way, August 29th will mark their last concert for a while as they will be enlisting in the army soon.

Park Jae-jung, the “husband” of the After School member Uee on MBC’s “We Got Married: Season 2“, showed up looking quite stiff and a tad bit awkward. For a model, he sure didn’t know how to pose in front of the cameras. He did look quite dapper in his white silk bow tie, though.

Hwayobi and her new lover Sleepy were cute together as they rocked out in their red and black theme, but I still can’t get over her new hair color. Someone needs to remind them that trying to match their dyed hair color with their shoes is a fashion faux pas.

2PM did the right thing and wore white before Labor Day. They gave off a very 90s whole boy band feel, until you notice their sheer white pants.

Oh Seung-hyun definitely chose the right color. She rocked her royal purple dress, but the material is not that flattering. Though the girl has the much sought after S-line, the material of the dress and light that day didn’t compliment her form.

The old yet new group Boo Hal rocked the carpet with the typical black, white, and gray except for one guy. Jeans are usually a big no-no for any kind of “carpet” ceremonies, especially when you’re standing next to someone who is dressed to impress.

Jang Ga-eun shows off the transitioning seasons with a very popular piece among celebrities these days by fashion designer Lee Sang-bong. This turquoise plaid dress seriously shows off some leg and she compliments the dress well with her multi-strap heels.

Gi Tae-young continues with the white and black theme with his suit. Nothing too flashy or innovative, but you can never go wrong with this classic look.

Han Hyo-joo is the runner-up to host MNET 20’s Choice Award on August 28th. Han Hyo-joo was chosen due to the popularity of SBS drama “Brilliant Legacy“.

You can’t forget about the opening host performance of the annual MNET 20’s Choice Award! Everyone is anticipating the reveal of the actual host for the awards, as well as the actual ceremony itself.

The awards given out at the 2^nd Mnet 20’s Choice Awards on August 23^rd 2008 were tabulated democratically by popular vote, but the results say otherwise.

An industry insider told us that the award shows are not democratic but are the result of deal making by music industry executives. If this is true, then we know why Park Yong-ha was picked as “Hot Global Star.” Who is he? Fellow nominees, Rain, Dong-bang-shin-ki or even the sexy Song Seung-heon are more widely known stars. And what’s with “Hot School girl” category? That doesn’t sound right. And is there an age limit on this? This one smells like it was made specifically for Sohee. And lastly, the “popular vote” for the “Hot issue maker” should be the President of the Republic of Korea, Lee Myung-bak, not U.S. beef, for being wooed by the U.S. government on the golf course and then hastily signing the U.S. import beef agreement without consulting his government.

The highly anticipated shared stage between pop divas Lee Hyori and Uhm Jung-hwa fell short of my low expectations at the Mnet 20’s Choice Awards on August 23^rd 2008. Although I was hoping for something titillating (i.e. a shared kiss, perhaps?) between the two, the pop divas confirmed that they could easily be interchangeable. Wearing the exact same outfit, Lee Hyori performed Uhm Jung-hwa’s hit, “D.I.S.C.O” and the only way I could tell it was Hyori was because of her sexy smile and short legs. Otherwise, she could be Uhm Jung-hwa herself. On the other hand, Uhm Jung-hwa’s version of her counterpart was a slightly less fashionable, slightly skankier take on Hyorish’s fashion. Wearing white cropped pants mismatched with a peach high-cut bathing suit, Uhm Jung-hwa did better with the booty shaking that was required for Lee Hyori’s hit, “U Go Girl.” The reason being-Uhm Jung-hwa has the booty.

At the 2^nd Mnet 20’s Choice Music Awards, the special stage shared between Jun Jin and Wondergirls should not have happened.

Why?

Three reasons: (1) Questionable choice of song. Looking like a 35 year old ajusshi, Jun Jin doesn’t send out the vibe of “cool and hip”. If anything, he’s a cradle robber waiting to happen. His performance of Justin Timberlake’s “Sexy Back” to borderline legal girls (Sohee is underage at 16!) is slightly disturbing. What was Mnet thinking by pairing up Jun Jin and Wondergirls? Are they saying that it’s ok for an ajusshi to get it on with such girls? (2) Over 15. While Sohee barely makes it over the age limit for viewers, the camera does close up shots of her butt. That is not right. Perhaps that camera should have chosen the butt of an older Wondergirls member? Would that make any difference? (3) Too sexy, too fast. The Wondergirls are trying to get their sexy back, but they never had it in the first place. By modeling themselves like the Victoria Secret models, doesn’t help. Let me remind you that Victoria Secret models are trying to get their sexy back because they are underwear models! Getting their sexy back with Justin Timberlake is ok. But for the Wondergirls and Jun Jin is a big no-no. Their attempt to strut and look sexy just doesn’t work.

The blue carpet at the 2^nd Mnet 20’s Choice Awards on August 23rd 2008 was nothing to rave about. If anything, the fashions were either seasonally inappropriate (hello Big Bang) or just plain ol tacky (hello Suh In-young). Otherwise, check out the rest of the styles on the blue carpet.

What is that atrocity of a dress? With her unflattering bowl haircut, her fluorescent pink train clashing with the gray and the recycled mismatched platforms, why is she so happy? Suh In-young should be cowering behind the heavily makeuped Park Ji-heon of V.O.S.

And now you know why Suh In-young was not with her crew on the blue carpet at the Mnet 20 Choice Awards on August 23^rd 2008.
