Guess who: Old vs new generation legs

0724-legsc.jpg

Being of the older generation, my legs can kick anyone’s butt since they are stong, thick and muscular like the ones on the left. I remember years ago when I would see droves of girls with thick calves roaming around Seoul. I recall once that a guy who I was interested in at the time told me that he doesn’t like girls with thick moos. That was long ago, but I have now noticed that the crop of new generation legs are much slimmer and longer like the ones to the right. What is going on? It is the food? Changing diet? I only wish that I was born later so I could have a chance for slimmer legs.

0724-legs.jpg0724-legs1.jpg0724-legs21.jpg

The legs belong to popdiva and not-so great actor Uhm Jung-hwa (left) and newly-wed actress Han Chae-young at a press conference for their new movie, “Are you living with the person you love?” (trans: 지금 사랑하는 사람과 살고 있습니까) with Lee Dong-gun and Park Young-woo.

I don’t find either one particularly attractive or unattractive. We are born with what we have though the amount of our body fat does make a difference. I’m a plump gal with bigger thighs so its proportioned to my body (thank god). I wouldn’t want thin, stick like legs even if they were sexy. The picture on the left looks more muscular and atheletic while the one one right looks like a stick with no muscle at all.

Thew “slimmer is better” trend in Asia is doing my head in. The majority of female celebrities look like they would fall over if you coughed in their direction and thin legs that have absolutely ZERO muscle definition are not the slightest bit attractive.

    DO NOT WANT.

  3. 3 lolz July 24, 2007 at 8:34 pm

must be the diet. more calcium probably

  4. 4 Mingna July 24, 2007 at 9:15 pm

is Uhm Jung-hwa pregnant? >_< lol

  5. 5 Licky C July 24, 2007 at 9:31 pm

Uhm Jung Hwa has my legs! Lollll (that’s pretty much my only thought right now XD)

I guess we should be thankful their legs are proportionate to the rest of their body. Uhm Jung Hwa has a much stockier compact build so to expect her to have little skinny stick legs is unreasonable. Same as Han Chae Young. From what I can gather, she’s taller and has a smaller frame, so to expect her to have legs like Uhm Jung Hwa is also unreasonable. Just my thought…

Am I the only one who got distracted looking at the shoes? ‘Cause they’re good shoes. Do want XDDDDD

This is probably going to sound cynical, but there’s probably a calf-reduction surgery option in Korea, as well, right?

  7. 7 popseoul July 24, 2007 at 10:35 pm

Of course there is! This is land of plastic surgery. The Koreans were the first to master this procedure

If Han Chae-young was born with legs like those, then good for her since that’s a total fad in most of East Asia (I’m in Hong Kong right now so I would know). However, if she starved herself to that stage, poor thing. Somebody hand her a bucket of KFC.

For somebody like Uhm Jung-hwa, I think that her body is fit and proportional, not to mention healthy looking. Maybe it’s the whole Texas influence but I personally think that ALL people, guys and girls, should have a balanced amount of meat on them. Enough to give somebody curves but not over the top to the point where medically, they’d be considered overweight. I don’t think that’s asking for too much.

  9. 9 Paul July 24, 2007 at 11:22 pm

Uhm Jung Hwa has my legs…and I’m a guy.

  10. 10 the count July 24, 2007 at 11:23 pm

Strong, muscular legs are way more sexy than skinny, no-muscle legs. I’ll take the ones on the left, please!

  11. 11 marsha July 24, 2007 at 11:39 pm

I think both of them have legs proportionate to the rest of their bodies. Both of them look fab, actually. Eventhough Uhm looks stocky, she looks confident and THAT makes her sexy.

  12. 12 SKYEPINK July 25, 2007 at 12:35 am

Jessica Biel! She’s always on top of some most sexiest woman alive list and she’s totally buff….not to mention the arm candy of Justin Timberlake (who dumped a skinny gal for her!). Toned is always sexier.

  13. 14 Jane July 25, 2007 at 2:22 am

aha i think uhm jung hwa’s legs can kick han chae yeong’s ass … bet she’s stronger too ahah

  14. 15 Timoshi Huang July 25, 2007 at 2:35 am

    i bet she didn’t exercise…

  15. 16 jess July 25, 2007 at 2:47 am

hmmm i don’t know what to think. being a posessor of the dreaded moos, i guess i have frequently dabbled in the thought of having nice long willowy legs. however, living in the states i guess i don’t get too much flack for them either. being a college athlete i’m kind of forced to do a lot of training and iron-pumping so i kind of see them as the result of hard work? anyway regarding men’s opinion of my legs…i haven’t had any complaints so far!

  16. 17 akamaki July 25, 2007 at 3:42 am

old generation legs looks nicer~~~ more meat and more natural ‘o’

  17. 18 timeout July 25, 2007 at 3:59 am

the new generation korean girls are taller and thinner. my cousin who is in school in korea is like 5′6 or 5′8 and only weighs in at 105 pounds. my mom went to korea last summer and told me that girls want to weigh in at 100 pounds or less. my mom is like 5′2 and only 98 pounds which is thin here in the States but completely norm over there. she also told me that guys are getting thinner over there too, she said it’s like a class thing, ppl who are thin as viewed as ppl with money and time to workout.

  18. 19 christine July 25, 2007 at 4:15 am

My head nearly slide off the rest of my body reading that article JenJ posted. What happened to self-esteem?

BTW – according to the article, it’s $800 to re-virginize a female and $2,800 for the calf muscle slimming procedure.

  19. 20 Jessica July 25, 2007 at 4:26 am

I don’t really see it as a trend… I think in general Asian people in Asia are slimmer simply because of what they eat.

However, nowadays, there’s starting to be an increase of overweight people due to fast-foods and the like.

  20. 21 Aivoxora July 25, 2007 at 7:14 am

*christine: True !!! YOu can re-virginize a female. I know ! That’s the most stupidest procedure ever, ever. But well, in my country, it’s popular.

For the legs. I still want slimmer legs compare to the old generation. Uhm Jung-hwa’s legs look like soccer athele’s legs.

  21. 22 mei July 25, 2007 at 8:19 am

Gah, I would never do that kind of surgery. I’ll keep all the muscles in my legs thank you very much. Chae Young’s slim legs kinda make her feet look big.

  22. 23 Leigh July 25, 2007 at 8:22 am

Forget about the legs, I can’t stop looking at Uhm Jung Wah’s hair! However, I think she is still very pretty though!

  23. 24 Di July 25, 2007 at 9:15 am

I heard stretching helps, yoga and pilates too. o.o

  24. 25 OMG! July 25, 2007 at 10:07 am

here’s the biggest problem i have with plastic surgery – what are you going to tell your kids when they are born short and ugly? beauty is skin deep and therefore may be able to alter your appearance BUT YOU CAN’T CHANGE YOUR DNA. if your dna determines you’ll have a daughter with stubby legs and flat face, you will seriously cripple her psychologically as she grows up.

true natural born beauty is held in high esteem because it is rare. getting plastic surgery to create beauty is a lie. lying to yourself, to the people around you, and to your future kids. when i found out that surgery exists to change the shape of your calves, i just about flipped… your daughter will have moo (radish) for legs!!! think of the children!!!

  25. 26 ZZ July 25, 2007 at 10:08 am

Most of the girls in Japan have those skinny legs…but they have absolutely no muscle tone…so their legs feel like flabby flesh and a bone…kind of creepy. There is something to be said for women with some muscle in their legs. Muscle is better….

  26. 27 moomoo July 25, 2007 at 10:19 am

GAHHHHH!!!! I hope I don’t drive away hordes of suitors because of my muscular calves (God forbid). I should maybe just keep to wearing pants. JK. when i visit Seoul next summer i plan to wear short shorts and flaunt my moos. thank God i live in the states…i think if i lived in Seoul i would be shunned for life due to the fact that i’m 5′5″ and don’t weigh less than 100 pounds. lol

  27. 28 kirstien July 25, 2007 at 12:07 pm

old and new generation legs?!! i dont know why u’re making it such a big deal!!! not all the artists have to have a pair of long slim legs and not all men are crazy about them either! i know a lot of guys (especially the athletic ones) who like muscular legs. both pairs of legs are
proportionate to the owners’ bodies,i’m a fan of ms. han, and her legs matches her slim figure…it would be weird if she has a full figure but has a slim long legs, right?!

  28. 29 christaluvsdrama July 25, 2007 at 12:30 pm

Firstly, I so knew that it was Uhm Jung Hwa. Chae-young unni has always been skinny if you look at her pics from when she was little. I didn’t notice that looking muscular was popular, lol I like the soft but firm look over muscular any day.

  29. 30 caprisun July 25, 2007 at 12:59 pm

I actually think both sets of legs suit their owners! Diversity is what makes the world beautiful. I appreciate thin, slender legs as well as toned, muscular ones. The old generation looks a lot curvier though… Uhm Jung-hwa actually has a figure xD That’s one advantage to having some meat on your bones.

  30. 31 kiwee July 25, 2007 at 1:01 pm

i think if you use a calve massager, it gets a little slimmer.

  31. 32 starz12 July 25, 2007 at 2:08 pm

why the hell did han chae young cut her hair.. she looks good with longer hair.

  32. 33 kezrel July 25, 2007 at 2:39 pm

Their legs look great (calves are generally okay-looking, I haven’t seen a pair of calves I haven’t liked). I’m just happy they’re not disproportioned. Personally, I prefer more muscular legs because I don’t looking weak and helpless. Yeah..I’m a fan of a strong female. Plus, I like seeing the muscles move when they walk (especially the thigh muscles…it’s pretty cool). The thighs are a slighlty different matter for me, I like thighs medium-sized…not skinny, nor fat. I can handle fat thighs but skinny thighs creep me out.

  33. 34 Dovey July 25, 2007 at 3:11 pm

I wouldn’t want legs that are too thick or too thin… These two don’t fit my preference, but I don’t think neither one is bad looking.

  34. 35 van July 25, 2007 at 4:25 pm

I agree with kiwee.. in japan there’s calve massage that can make ur calve slimmer.. i read it in japan magazines.. i dont know if its going to work tho’.. but i really want to try.. ahahaha..

  35. 36 TURFA July 25, 2007 at 4:58 pm

i thnk tht new generation is better than old generation

  36. 37 MexicanHat July 25, 2007 at 7:05 pm

Seriously I prefer the first leg over the other.

  37. 38 mawee July 26, 2007 at 12:32 am

uhm jung hwa the not so great actor? maybe U can change it to han chae young the not so great actor, really I prefer UJH’ acting rather than HCY… c`mon~ ㅋㅋ

anyway calf-reduction surgery?!?! I should go to Korea now!! heehee~ ^^

  38. 39 Kai July 26, 2007 at 10:06 am

i prefer something in the middle…

  39. 40 amareally July 26, 2007 at 5:17 pm

Is Uhm Jung Hwa pregnant ??? I actually agree about Han Chae Young legs being too skinny … scares me, I hope she has enough calcium, on my thoughts when i saw her legs are if she broke a heel and slipped her legs looked they’re breakable !

  40. 41 wth July 26, 2007 at 11:02 pm

eww..those chicken legs. You can find lots of those in Afria, no need to imitate that. I think Cameron Diaz has the sexiest legs.

  41. 42 Em July 26, 2007 at 11:24 pm

long lean legs are sexy if they are toned but her legs just look like chop sticks! Neither of them have it to be labeled as great legs.

  42. 43 Hokensongirl July 30, 2007 at 12:17 pm

    Dear Popseoul,

OMG, this is like my worst nightmare! I have what you call “thick-moos” and they have haunted me my whole life. I only dated men from races where the women are considered attractive to be ‘thick’.

Coming back to Asia has been difficult because the ideal legs are the size of my arms!

I feel ya girl! And that man who told you those horrible things doesn’t deserve you at all.

All my bfs told me how they love my muscular calves… can you imagine?!

  43. 44 moshimosh January 3, 2008 at 10:15 pm

both are sexy as hell so which ever one you got as long as your healthy and weigh in proportion to your height then you will be one sexy gal. never ever let anyone let you feel out of place due to your looks.

  44. 45 R. Kelly February 4, 2008 at 7:38 pm

I lived in Korea for about a year straight, and continue to visit the country infrequently. I see about just as many muscular legs in Korea from my recent visits as I did in my earlier visits. Honestly, I don’t think Korean girls are now born with thinner legs, it’s just that fruitcake casting directors and music producers only choose girls with stick figures and advertise them as the “true look of Korean women.” It’s annoying as Hell, and I hope the trend will die down soon. Learn to love yourself and the body God graced you with.

  45. 46 christina March 8, 2008 at 2:15 pm

I think it’s partly because this generation doesn’t have to do more physical stuff since we have modern technology like cars and the subway to take us places. Back then, cars weren’t everywhere, so there was more walking so their leg muscles became more developed. I think they both look fine, honestly.

  46. 47 Love-Peace-Music March 10, 2008 at 8:23 am

Uhm Jung-hwa looks really good here

  47. 48 Dovey March 10, 2008 at 2:28 pm

The one on the left I wouldn’t say is due to fat. I call it “lean muscle mass”, and it is easy to tell that that is what it is.

  48. 49 March 12, 2008 at 9:44 am

Nice legs aren’t just about being thin. It’s about proportion, ratio, and balance. On another note, I’ve seen legs on a guy that any girl would be envious of. It’s simply just not fair!
