Is this the end of Joo?

joo_20080202_popseoul.jpg

JYP’s latest product, Joo will not become the next ballad sensation as anticipated, not because she is ugly and lacks the vocal talent, but because of her scandalous past.

Right after her debut, pictures from her “dark high school days” spread across the web, tarnishing the “innocent” image JYP set to create. And today, a sticker picture of Joo and her boyfriend kissing was unleashed, disappointing many fans who actually believed her words when she said “Although my title song, “Because of Men” is a good song, I cannot relate because I never cried because of a man.” Well, that’s because she probably made them cry.

Smoking, drinking, hanging out with the wrong crowd and kissing your boyfriend might have been forgivable if Joo didn’t sell market herself as an “innocent” angel. Too bad that JYP and Joo weren’t equipped with common sense and morals when producing her first single.

ok lmao i just read like some of the comments and yeah everyone has to kind of calm down. seriously. just deal with it. stop complaining how korean is like “soooo 1800″. that is probably the stupidest thing i’ve ever heard. maybe korea is just ummmm…hmmmm…more CONSERVATIVE yeah just maybe more conservative than the States where like celebs as young as 16 are getting pregnant and like half of the celebs here in the States are like in rehab. – -”

    • 2 LOL? October 8, 2009 at 10:50 am

you would like to think that korea is more ‘CONSERVATIVE’ wouldnt you?

the korean fanbase DOES overreact, it is impossible to deny. take a look at jae beom or even yoo seung joon from years back.

I find it funny that Jezabel K is attacking people for grammar and spelling mistakes when her posts are rife with the same amount of failures, if not more. How ironic is it that someone who insists on taking the moral high ground can’t even spell “Jezebel,” which refers to one of the biggest deviant women in the bible?

And how do people know that Joo is “french kissing?” Do they even know what that term means, or do they have some other racy tongue-in-mouth photos that no one knows about?

Yes, the drinking and smoking were poor choices. But people overreacting and jumping from “kissing” to “abortion” does make Korea seem like they’re stuck in the 1800s. I don’t see how this makes Joo any worse than any other ex-juvenile delinquent. With the Korean media and entertainment industry propagating such a ridiculous virgin-whore dichotomy, white standards of beauty, acceptance of plastic surgery, and open-arm policy towards American goods, people only have themselves to blame for bad “role models” and so-called corrupted youth. If people are so disgusted with American influences, then perhaps they can do themselves a favour and stop using the very language they’re using on this site.

Even then, does Korean society have the right to pass baseless judgement on its members on the virtue that they are conservative Koreans, and nothing more? No good reason at all, just “we’re conservative?” I believe that’s called a circular reasoning fallacy, not to mention outright hypocrisy in such a Christian-influenced nation. Joo’s marketed image may have been “deceptive,” (I still haven’t seen any concrete proof, especially since celebrity images are hardly ever consistent due to the aforementioned virgin-whore dichotomy) but that’s nothing compared to how older adult celebrities market themselves as if they’ve never had work done on their faces and bodies. Something also tells me that this wouldn’t have been such a big deal if Joo had been a guy. I mean, no one’s bashing the boyfriend for having a romantic interest at that age, are they?

What’s wrong with a woman kissing her boyfriend? >_>

  5. 6 Not Really February 5, 2008 at 11:34 pm

OH PLEASE! This is FAR from being a scandal. It will be a scandal when she notifies her husband of their impending divorce via text message, flashes photographers, downs a bottle of prescription pills, loses custody of her children and is forcibly institutionalized for mental instability.

Then again, I guess you have to start somewhere…

  6. 7 Jezabel K February 6, 2008 at 4:28 am

loldrama, I don’t have time for this anymore however, I must address the whole “bible” thing in regards to my name. What in the world makes you assume that my name is derived from the bible?!!? It’s because of ignorant people like yourself that makes people like me (non-Christian folks) DISGUSTED with your religion. FYI twat, my parents are BUDDHIST and YES, my name is JezAbel (you turd) and my name has absolutely NOTHING to do with whatever deviant or whatever figures from your “bible”. JezAbel was the name of a friend of my parents when they first moved to the U.S. Not to pop your bubble, but the world and the people in it, DO NOT revolve around Christianity.

  7. 8 Jezabel K February 6, 2008 at 4:33 am

Haha, I also must add that Christians are NOT the only moral beings on this universe. Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, etc are also MORAL without being CHRISTIAN. According to what your saying, IF I was Christian THAN only then would I be MORAL. Your dumb@ss just opened a whole new can of worms on a topic that had absolutely NOTHING to do with Christianity but because of your assumptions and ignorance, are making this bigger than what it needs to be.

    - JezAbel with a proud damn A.

  8. 9 Carina February 6, 2008 at 7:54 pm

Okay, I just have one thing to say.

I’ve read this argument more than once now: “when did she ever say her image was innocent?” and it’s just so goddamn stupid I have to address it.

Hello, image is not something you SAY, it’s something other people can see. If she wears white, a tiara, dresses cutely and conservatively, answers interview questions in a misleading way, then yes she does have an innocent image and is most likely consciously marketed that way.

Another thing. I live in Korea, and while I can understand some of you Westerners who’ve never lived here think Korea is stuck in the ages, please at least try to be culturally sensitive. In Korea, high school students are not supposed to have boyfriends, much less kiss them, and are supposed to spend ALL of their free-time studying. To the vast majority of Koreans, it seems, the idea of a “wholesome” girl is one who doesn’t start drinking and dating until she is in college. I don’t think these days it is SUCH a big problem and I see high school students dating quite openly here, but nevertheless it is seen as less than ideal by the majority of the public.

So combine the fact that this girl sold the wrong image with the more conservative notions of what is appropriate for middle and high school students in Korea and this is the reaction you get.

well~ i don’t care. everyone have their own past. Kissing, drinking? well~ i don’t think its a big deal. Still support her! ^^ go go go JOO!!!^^

Oh dear, someone doesn’t seem to understand the difference between saying that Korean SOCIETY is Christian-influenced, and saying that one is a Christian INDIVIDUAL. I don’t know how or where you learned English, but under basic grammar rules and simple logic, “Korean society is Christian-influenced” doesn’t mean anything other than “Korean society is Christian-influenced.” Maybe you should’ve focused more on reading instead of developing a tragic emo complex out of non-existent sentences. Saying that Korea has roots in Christianity doesn’t mean that I’m Christian, it doesn’t mean that Christians are innately moral, and it certainly doesn’t mean I care about your life story. It just means that I find it ironic and hypocritical for people to claim that such a conservative Christian-based society reserves the right to pass judgement without justification, and whine about Joo setting a bad example when:

    a) the religion itself preaches so much on forgiveness and non-judgement
    b) most older adult celebrities get away with the giant facade that is plastic surgery and life in the spotlight in general

If one has to rely on 18-year old dime-a-dozen celebrities as “role models” for their daughters, then they have already failed as parents. They have themselves to blame, not the entertainment industry. And if you were attempting to establish some sort of moral message by denouncing Joo, then you could’ve at least exercized some discipline and tact instead of resorting to petty kindergarten tactics. I mean, “twat?” “Turd?” Surely you picked up better insults in elementary school.

Protip 1: If you “don’t have time” for this anymore, then it would help not to make two whole posts bitching about the matter. I suggest a valium, or learning the definition of consistency.

Protip 2: “Jezabel” is a common misspelling of “Jezebel.” If you don’t want your username to be associated with a famous harlot, then perhaps you should spell “JezAbel” or whatever it is PROPERLY. As much as I find it interesting that you randomly backpedaled on the spelling of a name that isn’t even yours, it’s even more interesting that you’re basically crying over how I mentioned Christianity as it pertains to KOREAN society on a KOREAN blog. Of course a country’s social and cultural norms are going to be largely tied into religion as well. Do you understand a little thing called CONTEXT?

But thanks for playing into the loldrama. I’m sure you’ll be able to muster up some self-restraint and stop yourself from replying with another remark about what a meanie poopy I am.

    OH MY GOD !!
SHE USED TO HAVE A BOYFRIEND !!!

I can’t believe my eyes ppl are calling this “scandal” ???
Heyy the fact that she used to smocke and drink before are bad for her image I know but, ppl has the right to change no?
So leave this girl alone for God’s sake -_-

  12. 13 kat February 8, 2008 at 7:19 pm

Umm First, how do we know how old she is in these pics? Second, that is NOT french kissing.

Drinking and smoking I’ll give you as evidence of hypocrisy, but pecking a boy in a photo does Not make you skanky.

  13. 14 Laura February 9, 2008 at 3:18 pm

*yawn* Joo is probably going to be another one hit wonder. Goodbye Joo, you suck.

  14. 15 hero February 9, 2008 at 3:23 pm

  15. 16 shiny February 10, 2008 at 3:31 pm

innocent image shattered i guess but really most artists have an image concept that isn’t always necessarily their real personalities
