Copycat suicide: Jang Chae-won ends life

Oh. This is so sad. Again, we have to report the news of another tragic death.

Transgender entertainer, Jang Chae-won committed suicide on October 3rd.  Upon hearing the news of the Choi Jin-shil’s death, ‘next Harisoo” told a friend that she understood what she must have been going through. Later that night at 20:17, the 26 year old left a message on her Cyworld stating “I’m sorry mom, next time I’ll do better.” Using the same method, Jang Chae-won was found dead in her bathroom at 22:50.

Rest in peace.

Please….no more.

    gracious, me.

  7. 7 Sarah October 6, 2008 at 6:13 pm

    oh god…… WHY?!!!!!!

goodness gracious, STOP. everybody is important to SOMEONE, so suiciding is hurting those people who love you…

    although… i suspect…. did he/she suicide because he/she thought that he/she couldn’t live up to ppl’s expectations?

ppl need to remember that every human heart is fragile and made of glass. please handle with CARE.

  10. 10 SP October 6, 2008 at 6:25 pm

Awww, I don’t know who this person is but another tragic event. This has to stop! Two other ‘copycat’ married women committed suicide the day after hearing Choi Jin Sil’s death, as well, due to depression.

Ironically, the two women committed the same suicide as actress, Choi Jin Sil.

    :(

    Rest in peace.

  11. 11 romar October 6, 2008 at 6:39 pm

This is really alarming… People, ending your life won’t solve your problem/s.

  12. 12 blue * October 6, 2008 at 7:01 pm

I don’t even know this person but goodness another celebrity suicide! R.I.P & condolences to her family & friends

I don’t know the real reason for her to choose this pathbut this comes as a reminder that

    a) mental illnesses like depression etc should be taken seriously. plz if u detect any changes in ur family & friends take heed they need all the help, especially when the signs are really hard to detect

    b) netizens should be cautious about what they say. i support free speech & all but people shouldn’t make unsubstantiated or heinous comments w/o a good reason. harsh comments from netizens have sometimes attributed to some stars’ deaths (like u.nee). celebrities are just like us afterall, they just have extraordinary jobs

    OMG!!! another one!! RIP!

  29. 29 OMG October 6, 2008 at 9:16 pm

has suicide become a celebrity statement?

life is great when its normal, kids.

i guess celebrities don’t live such glamorous lives :/

  30. 30 .nodame. October 6, 2008 at 9:19 pm

It has to be far from glamorous, no privacy, netizens, low selfesteem due to the pressure from the media to be perfect. And then as soon as you reach perfection, they pick you apart and make you feel horrible.

  31. 31 you October 6, 2008 at 9:20 pm

    aye..
one by one.. screw the one who started this trend

  32. 32 Izumi October 6, 2008 at 9:38 pm

A lot of people underestimate the stress level in the entertainment industry.

Of course, when you see your favorite star singing songs on SBS, it seems like they’re having a blast. But those are the very very very few minority successful stars.

Majority of stars that even get that far end up having to fight to stay even being noticed. There are tons of stars even just in Korea who don’t ever get a newspaper article they wish for.

I imagine this girl may have been one of those, and it’s just very tragic that she chose to follow in the footsteps of Choi Jin Shil… Prayers go out to her and her family…

  33. 33 Wtf October 6, 2008 at 9:45 pm

I think maybe it’s time that the Korean government step in and implement some type of program to raise awareness concerning the issues that these celebrities and nietzens are faced with. Someone seriously needs to publicly admit that there are some serious psychological problems

  34. 34 u_chill October 6, 2008 at 10:28 pm

    OMG! Werther Effect!

This was very prominent in Japan back in the days, now it hits Korea.

    :(

  40. 40 kitanablade3 October 7, 2008 at 12:44 am

Korea is such a hard place to live because of the society. But seriously, this is becoming a domino/Werther effect for all the mentally unstable individuals in Korea who don’t get psychiatric treatment because it’s taboo in Korea still!!! This is just scary for real.

R.I.P. Jang Chae Won and condolences to the family.

  43. 43 angelfish09 October 7, 2008 at 2:26 am

This shows exactly what’s happening in this world right now! The people out there r just getting meaner and meaner, so therefore some of the celebs can’t handle such pressure and decides to take their own life!
People wake up! This is sooo sad!
May Jang Chae Won Rest in peace.

  62. 62 life_precious October 7, 2008 at 8:36 am

well, life is so precious! This kind of tragedy shouldn’t be stopped. Just think many time first before you ended up your life. So please, people, never ever think of committing suicide. Everything has its own purpose so any kind of problem has a solution. Suicide is not the answer. The solution is help from other people. Yes,you can make a name for yourself just in one day but it will perish after many years, so what is the sense of committing suicide at all? Condolence to the bereave family..

  63. 63 life_precious October 7, 2008 at 8:37 am

    -correction—”should be stopped”….committing suicide….

  64. 64 tiffa October 7, 2008 at 8:49 am

  65. 65 grasshopper October 7, 2008 at 9:03 am

  68. 68 Chino October 7, 2008 at 9:23 am

This may not be over with suicides following a high profile celebrity. Remember when Chinese superstar Leslie Cheung committed suicide in 2003, well there were several Chinese fans of his who committed suicide afterwards. Let’s pray that it stops here. RIP Jang Chae Won~

  69. 69 SORA October 7, 2008 at 10:00 am

    wow. that’s sad.
and woah, i’m sorry but. he/she/it has some major baggage going on under the eyes.
really you guys… suicide.. it’s a permanent solution to a temporary problem.. God gave you life and He’ll decide when you die, so until then, suck it up and “take it like a man.” you think your life’s hard? well, you obviously haven’t seen the rest of the world.

  71. 71 Sierra October 7, 2008 at 10:44 am

What is up with these people? They think it’s a trend? Hellooo… you don’t wake up the next day and move onto the next trend… this is ridiculous… why are these people so fixated on depression and suicide?

I’ve got depression… but death is always the last thing on my mind…

  72. 72 cavogue October 7, 2008 at 11:37 am

im wondering why korean ppl so easily end their life just like that. come on be strong & bold, u not the only one suffer here, think about ur family, frens..dun keep ur probs to urself, share with someone u trust

    that picture scared me

  74. 74 la-dee-da October 7, 2008 at 12:15 pm

To PopSeoul: I don’t appreciate you labeling a suicide as a “copycat” deal. I mean, a person just ENDED her life. Must you have put the part about copying?
I see some sincerity in this article, but labeling death as copying was too much.

These suicides are getting to be too much. I’ll hope that this doesn’t happen again. Isn’t there anything that anyone can do? Why is suicide becoming such a common occurence. There are usually hardly among Korean celebrities. (I think.)

R.I.P. to all those who have died.

  75. 75 lydia October 7, 2008 at 1:03 pm

okay kinda scary now..Do they think taking ur life would make u popular?!?!..UR LAME IF SO!!.death takes you no where!!either heaven or hell!!udunno if this will ever be ur last chance as human or living on earth!!live every day like its ur last! Please, I just think that really, SOMEONE needs to live with these people. A manager. Anyone. It’s just….-Sighs.-

I wish these people would understand that they’re loved by SOMEBODY. Even if it’s just some silly fan that’s obsessed with you.

    NO MORE!

  89. 89 um...okay...o.0 October 7, 2008 at 8:18 pm

Let’s not make hasty generalizations about this issue as to not trivialize what has happened.

Popseoul labeling this suicide as a “copycat” is irresponsible and insensitive.

People don’t just end their own lives because they felt like it or because it’s a trend. I’m not sure how often people would just spontaneously kill themselves. Let’s give them a bit more credit than that.

I don’t think it’s possible for most of us here to understand it at a personal level but at least attempt to understand the surface and not just go on about our assumptions.

If it’s done for insignificant reasons, please stop keeping tabs and speculating who’s next. You’re sending a mixed message.

  90. 90 .nodame. October 7, 2008 at 8:25 pm

I think Popseoul is calling it a “copycat suicide” because it was done exactly the same way as Jin-shil, not because Jin-shil did it first and so she thought it was “cool”

  91. 91 ampebe911 October 7, 2008 at 9:59 pm

wassemarer!? I don’t no what this blog look like, I just drop by……….thx!

  92. 92 Not Really October 7, 2008 at 10:34 pm

This is so sad. I hope it doesn’t become a trend.

Death by hanging is a very, VERY ugly way to go. The capillaries usually burst in the eyes, causing an unsightly reaction. The tongue swells so much that it protrudes from the mouth. The lips will also swell significantly and turn purple.

All suicide is ugly, really. One thing I don’t think anyone realizes when they set out to commit suicide is that once the body is found, the bowels and bladder will have expressed their contents.

That doesn’t sound glamorous at all, now, does it?

  93. 93 Mel October 7, 2008 at 10:50 pm

Wao So many deaths in so little time,,, Shocking…. u.u…

  94. 94 so October 7, 2008 at 11:50 pm

    Tragic and sad.

  99. 99 weeeeee! October 8, 2008 at 2:16 am

ummm… looks like in 2004, suicide was the fourth leading cause of death in South Korea, reaching an all time high of 12,000.

    http://www.asianews.it/index.php?art=4226&l=en

In 2004, S. Koerea had a population of approx. 48 million people.

Where was everyones anger when those other 11,998 “not so famous” people took their own lives. Looks like only the “so-called beautiful people” get all the attention.

like i said before these stars need to learn its not shameful to talk about their worries with a shrink. it could save lives. and on the money side of things perhaps their managers should be watching out for them because if their star dies their money drys up.

This is really sad… but I don’t know if the first picture will really help her image on Popseoul… because I was also really turned off by it… her eyes are kind of scary, really too big, and reminds me of that madagascar baby lemur…

in any case, still, this is really sad. rip, though, I didn’t know who you were.

Wow, this is depressing. It’s one after another. Don’t these people value their own lives? It’s simply too tragic.

Thsi celebs isn’t the only one copycatting CJS’s suicide. There are reports that three or four ordinary Korean citizens, men and women, also followed her.

  111. 111 cattleya October 8, 2008 at 11:50 am

it is expected that many will follow CJS’ suicide. that is why i consider suicide a selfish act. CJS(R.I.P.) is a pillar in the industry, she who had risen from a fall, eventually killed herself. definitely that would influence those who are having mental illness and add to that the stressful life in Korea. and i know there will be more suicide cases this year compare when Lee Eun Joo killed herself. CJS is a well-respected actress and has been in the industry for 20 years…her suicide could influence many people…even those in the same industry that she was in.

i only hope that those celebrities who had had unsuccessful projects who are depressed because they do not have receive offers to have a series or movie will not simply feel self-pity and will follow CJS.

i had enough of this suicide thing…it is freaky when it is not Halloween yet!

    R.I.P.

Entertainers are simply human. No different from the general public. Everyone of us are living under pressure. Various pressures.

Don’t say that it only happens to entertainers. Don’t say that entertainers lead the trend, or the domino effect. People should be responsible for themselves respectively. They were all over 18! No other people should be blamed for in these circumstances.

The media and the citizens only concerned about the trend set by whom and whom, and sympathy going to whom and whom. Why don’t give positive alternatives to educate the public?

Three important messages should be transmitted to the public to stop the trend:

    (1) They were wrong! Those committing suicide were completely wrong! What they did was a big mistake.

    (2) If mentally ill, seek counselling and follow through expert’s instructions.

    (3) Only those who can get through difficulties would be highly regarded in the society.

Sympathy alone is no use to stop the trend.

Only do the correct messages help!

If it wasn’t for the fact that it’d be really disrespectful to criticise a person who’d just passed away, I would have LOOOOVED to go into a long rant about how the strategic camera angle and photoshopped eyes in the first picture… REALLY TURNS YOU OFF.

  116. 116 chichi October 9, 2008 at 1:39 am

oh god. everytime i go to popseoul, another human has ended his/her life. What’s wrong with korea?

  122. 122 JULIO October 10, 2008 at 2:45 pm

Seriously, something needs to be done. Being alarmed about the deaths is not enough. these events are depressing. they should have resident psychologists/ counselors or anybody to talk to. geez.

  123. 123 propertyof1tym October 10, 2008 at 3:41 pm

  126. 126 majarot October 23, 2008 at 8:25 am

I think people should stop posting those hurtful comments so this things can be avoided… So sad to know that many Korean celebrities are committing suicide because of stupid rumors and comments posted on the internet and anywhere by those crazy people…
